I'm not a fan of the schwable radials, but mostly because I do not like Schwalbe tires. For me, it mostly comes down to the side knobs of schwalbe tires not being supportive enough and they feel very squirmy. I find the Magic Mary not communicative enough in front and it's very hard to discern the limit between hooked in on the side knobs and washing out/pushing. The magic mary is slightly better than the albert for me because the shoulder/side knobs have more support, but they are both similar in that they are a 2/3/2 design and the side knobs are too fragile and get folder over and ripped off immediately.
I do like how the radial casing tires feel in straight line situations, particularly very chattery/gnarly rock gardens, but even then it's casing feel that I like and I don't have a significant amount of confidence in the tread pattern and grip.
Is there a reason you're replacing the maxxis tires on this bike? Tires are very subjective, but IMO the maxx grip assegai and maxx terra dhr2 is the go-to combo for southern california conditions. I don't particularly feel the need for any volume increases as I do not feel that additional volume means additional grip. It just adds compliance, with isn't something you need with 170mm of travel on hand.
I digress, if you are hung up on tire volume, then the answer for me is either 2.6 specialized butcher/cannibal combo or a 2.6 conti kryptotol rear (rear run on both front/rear is my preference for socal) is the path forward. Of the two, I would lean conti for longevity and for casing strength. The specialized 2.6 tires use a softer sidewall in my experience.
