Crestline RS 181.2 thread – builds, reviews, technical info

I'm curious for the lazy ones or those not wanting to swap the shock how it would ride without changing compression... I'd imagine that additional 20mm wouldn't be all that helpful without a change. I don't see the suggestion of a retune for 161 vs 181, but I'm not sure if the increase to 200mm surpasses some threshold?

Good to see it still works with a 29", i figured mullet might be necessary, is there a CS length minimum for the wagon wheel?
Same curiosity here, I've got an air shock, so sort of wondering if upping the air pressure and maxxing out on volume spacers might be enough.

Rob - where have you settled in the compression/rebount click range for the 180 setup? In the middle, or off to one side or other?

I have a video with Troydon out soon where he explains it in a bit more detail.

Not sure what you run your 'normal' tires at, but if you're feeling squirm, I'd probably keep jacking up the pressures.

I'm probably 240# kitted up and on my DH bikes I was running michelin DH at 23f/25r, maxxis DHF/R 28f/30r, and 33f/36r for the albert radials. My buddy, about 15# lighter) who's quite a bit faster than me said he ended up at over 40psi in the back to keep it from rolling over and despite the seemingly high pressures, he still prefers it to standard carcass tires.
Yeah. I’ve bumped pressure way up to the point it defeats the purpose of running radials in terms of improving grip. Still a very slow tire. Pretty heavy. Definitely not the game changer they started off being. No such thing as a free lunch. I still run them in the wet weather though.

On the topic of radial tires:

To clarify I ride lighter e-bikes (44-49#s) and ride my e-bikes mostly on hard pack with tons of loose rocks, like endless loose rocks. Plenty of jumps, drops, ledges, etc. Not much to push against in the way of berms or solid traction.

On an e-bike for me at 180#s, Schwalbe Trail carcass radials are pretty bad actually. To the point of feeling dangerous at times, not because of a lack of traction but because you'll land from a jump and the tire will shift out of the way and you'll suddenly be on a rim and have no traction at all. You can add a lot of air, but then they just bounce and any traction improvement is long gone and they end up worse than non-radial tires. They feel like a basketball at that point.

The gravity casings though are MUCH better and I really quite like the Albert 27.5 x 2.6 gravity on the rear of my e-bike at 25psi. As in, it might just be my favorite rear tire for that application.

I don't find radials slow on trail riding at all, but that's because my trails are so rough that the radials just glide where-as other tires bounce. I actually installed an Albert trail 29 x 2.5 on the front of my trail bike, and it was great for that application. But I don't take that bike on the same terrain I take the e-bikes on. It's more hardpack and not as rocky. I did find the 2.4 Martello a notable upgrade over the Albert though, in all ways, for that application.

A couple of other notes, I personally find big tires (i.e. >2.6 actual) really gnarly to ride. They bounce and lose control easily. Even my novice 105# ex-wife made me remove some 2.6 tires from her trail bike because whatever pressure we tried, they just bounced like crazy.

Also, I own 3 sets of BERD wheels, love them in the right application, such as for my novice 105# ex-wife or my trail bike on XC tires. But I tried them on my Relay e-bike, and they were heavier duty stiffer rims, and it was actually pretty bad imo. They just move too much and don't hold the line. These are very well used wheels so I acknowledge that tightening up the spokes, or even BERD's new DH spokes, could change that entire equation. But installing CB Synthesis wheels was a revelation honestly. The CB's just hold a line much better and as such I was faster under high traction situations, which admittedly where I live, are a bit rare.

The best e-bike front tire I've tried for my very loose conditions, is the Mazza Race 2.6. Mad traction and it's held up fine for me, but I need more time on it. It likes low air pressure. I run 20 psi in it. Those Vittoria tires will be really stiff at higher pressures and feel wooden but once lowered they are similar to the Radials in the way they absorb trail chatter, yet have nice firm sidewalls.

I got an email back from Troydon today letting me know that my Forge Frameset will ship with the 700Wh battery. In my order, I'd asked for the 800 because of the uncertainty of what was coming. I followed up after the Avinox announcement and asked if I could get the 700. I can't wait to get this bike on the trails!

Why do you want the 700 over the 6 or 8?

700 can run the full power of the new m2s motor 1500w and 150nm I think. Only battery of the 3 available for the 181.2 that can do that.
Gotcha. Too each their own. Those peak numbers are more of a novelty, like ludicr

To each their own. Those peak numbers are a novelty, like ludicrous mode in a Tesla, and don’t have much practical use for me. Now if the 700 is lighter than the 6 and a more efficient battery then I’m all in!

700wh is holy grail at the moment

I also like that it sits lower in the frame than the 800. I’ve got a battery for lunch charges for the bigger days.

Besides accessing peak power output numbers what else does it offer? Is it more efficient? Lighter? Too late for a slimmer downtube that it offers.
Easier to swap out. I have managed to get 2 x 700 batteries, and it takes under 5 mins, and less fiddly (2 bash plate screws. 2 battery screws under downtube.

Also sounds like it will be easier on my
Mechanic to route cables when he builds it. I like to keep him happy!

How is the 700 feel vs 600/800? It looks longer than the 800, makes me think it puts the weight in the wrong place.

It sits higher than the 800 bc it is longer. That’s why it will not fit inside a RH2

That puts my mind at ease. If we can ever buy 700wh batteries in the UK 🤣

I looked it up on Avinox's site. The FP700 is slightly shorter at 558.5 mm vs 560.4 mm for the FS800. Weight-wise it's closer to the FS600 (2.87 kg) vs FS800 (3.74 kg) at 3.18 kg.

Here is the spec comparison from Avinox.

600wh "Ripper" is the lightest weight and more so the shortest case to keep the weight lowest in the center tube.
700wh "Roundie" is within mm's in length of the 800, and weighs in the mid range. Best energy ratings too for the juice.
800wh "Ranger" is has the best range but the most weight.

Choose the battery that suits your riding style, or fits your frame!

"Lindsey" is quite happy with her 600wh "Ripper" for now..!

Does anyone have any information on the AXS extension cable? I need a new one and I cannot find the part number or connector type. Seems like a Higo micro M, but I can’t find it anywhere.

Can someone please post the stock Trail settings? On mine, Trail mode has less support and power than Eco, even after a reset. Wondering about that firmware... and the lack of Boost... and Trail mode being slower.

This bike rips and is so much fun. Logged 6000 ft of elevation on my first ride on one charge. Crushed my DH time on some classic trails, and it’s not dialed yet. In love! 51 lbs with those uber heavy gravity tires. My normal Maxxis setup would have she bike slightly under 50#.

A few other crestline folks have the same issue.

@Greg Watts. Can you compile a report of the issues some of us Crestline folks are having with assist modes on the MS2 then tag in an Avinox support person on this website to look into it?

Also, sorry to bother the sentient humans in this thread with AI slop. No offense, bot.

I also noticed the same today (first ride). In terms of power and torque output setting, I’ve got Trail setup between Auto and Turbo but the actual output feels like Eco.

I am curious as to how it rides compared to your Pole Vioma K1...since I have a K0.
So after the first ride, which was at Aliso Woods in So Cal, (one of my usual spots) I got 28 achievements on Strava and 11 PR’s. Of the 11 pr’s, 6 were top 10 all time and 1 was KOM. All of the DH runs were good, but the trails are blown out, so not ideal for PR’s like good hero dirt after a rain. But I was within about 5 seconds of my pr’s on those trails. And that’s just the first ride, with only 1 click added to my HSC on the shock, so lots of room for improvement. One thing bugging me is the headset feels loose and has some slop in it even though it’s definitely tightened down with the star nut. I might swap it out for a CC Hellbender 70 which I already have brand new. The motor is definitely a hot rod and I love it!
