SZZS specific CEF50-main thread (initial builds and troubleshooting related only)

Hey, i'm back, after being one of the first owners of a CEF50 frame a couple years ago and selling it, I decided to buy one again, so probably you'll see me adding info and upgrades to the frame, this time its a CEF50-3 with the DPC030 display.
I'm waiting for the frame to arrive, Size L, Green matte color, 700wh carbon battery.
components waiting in my garage for the build:
- DIY wheelset, DT350, Sapim D-light and EX511, both 29 but I have a spare 27.5 also to try it mullet, Assegai / DHR2 DD both
- Funn ZS56/66 headset, no ICR, proper cable routing through the frame (part I hated the most from my old CEF50, ICR)
- Rockshox Lyrik Select+ 170mm fork
- Rockshox Super Deluxe Ultimate Air shock @ 210x52.5 (157.5mm travel)
- Funn 45mm stem
- Renthal fatbar carbon 770mm handlebar
- FSA carbon IS cranks
- Oneup seatpost 210mm
- SLX/XT mix M8120/M7120 brakes
- 203mm XT discs
- M8100 10/52 cassette + XT derailleur, shifter and chain
- Aliexpress carbon saddle
- M8120 pedals
Aiming to 20kg+-, lets see where it'll land.
Ditto: but things I'd change or upgrade.
1) I would have gone with a size up to XL for a longer reach...6'1" with shorter 30" inseam. The lower standover height esp. 27.5 rear is quite generous allowing for a 200 mm plus dropper.
2) Go UDH now with analog Sram T derailleur.
3) will be getting the 250Wh extender when/if tariffs go down in the US. I use the 720Wh 36V battery on a heavier 38 Enduro setup.
4) Would go with integrated top tube display for a cleaner cockpit. I wonder how easy it would be to convert DIY?
5) Stay with the frame cable routing....I had to convert the frame myself.
6) Keep requesting that SZZS badger Bafang on smoothing out the higher power modes with periodic firmware updates for Emtb specific uses. Maybe do an auto down shifter like DJI?

Relatedly, has anyone done the latest 80Nm update. Where to get? How is it?

1) I wanted something that's more playful, and the L size fitted quite well for me before, so sticking with it.
2) I have Sram X0 transmission in my other bike and I hate it. Slow shifting, some gears take forever. For me it was a big downgrade over my loved XT/XTR combo. Depends on which bike I use more i'll have the X0 transmission on the one I use the less
3) I'll be building an extender myself :)
4) CEF50-3, the one that I ordered has the integrated display in the top tube! Also was looking for a cleaner look
5) Yes, ICR is the worst things that could've happened to mtb.
6) I'll ping them on that

Did anybody has this delamination oh their frame. It's located under motor, where the battery slips in?

Good first report. 👍

Bafang really does a disservice to not free up another 10% of reserve battery. A nice firmware update as an option would be warranted. It does somewhat help justify the bigger 720 battery for those that wanted the smaller 410 battery originally.

But still it needs to be the M820 frame manufacturers such as Light Carbon, Dengfu, and SZZS that request the firmware updates. Here is where I think Jim especially at Light Carbon could assert some influence with Bafang-e corporate HQ if it would help boost his sales. IMHO💸💸💸
Hi all, reading about the battery cutoff kicking in below 20% remaining battery does anyone know if the besst tool enables adjustment of this limit as having only 80% of 700 wh is quite a reduction - I agree 10% is understandable but 20% kind of sucks?

It would be nice but the Beest won't work for battery BMS programming. It would have to be a firmware update, which is unlikely by Bafang.

For my CEF50-1 first models I had to create a custom magnet for my centerlock disc so it worked fine, but I noticed that now the frame has 2 places to screw the sensor instead of 1 as before.
So my question is, can I now use the original shimano lockring magnet? Like this one

Its a bit closer to the axle than the bafang one:

And another question, I've seen most over here are using 210x55 shocks with V1 and V2 frames.
my take on V2 frame is since the bottom bolt for the shock is moved some mm's forward, that puts the bb a tad higher but also allows just a little more travel than before.
I'll for sure measure full travel, and have already printed some travel spacers for RS super deluxe air shock to try it in 210x52.5, 210x53 but if I can ideally use it directly with no spacer on 210x55 that'd leave me with 165mm back and 170 front, instead of 157.5 for 210x52.5. ideal for the type of riding I do (enduro)

If it helps, my frame is a V3 size M, and I use a 210x55 shock with a 170mm fork. I think the only difference with the V2 is the integrated screen.

Thanks, that's really useful.
My personal take is that CEF50-2 and CEF50-3, which are the frames that can work with a coil will also work with 210x55 without issues.
Why?
Being the lower shock mount tilted almost 5mm forward (need to measure) compared to V1 frame, that should make the upper mount be almost 1mm up, increasing BB height compared to V1, better if you use mullet but also gaining some travel when full compressed without the linkage touching since in V1 it was really close if not touching with 55mm stroke (in my frame it touched, I could use 210x52.5 max).

Here are photos of V1 and V2, its really notable how further from the saddle tube the lower mount is on V2 and V3. white is V2/V3. Black ones are V1

Shipping is by air so hopefully it should arrive here within 15-20 days. Love the color, although in the photo it isn't quite representative, there's a video with the same color on a cef55 that's with proper light ()

Battery arrived, now waiting for the frame. Eternal wait :'(
Also this week carbon cranks should arrive, last piece to have all the parts ready, I even finish building the wheelset

Max shock strone on CEF50 v3 size L is 59mm (210-149.64) Realistically 59-58 ideal since 60 would have interference on the link.

Im going 210x55 directly

Is there room enough for a 29” burly rear tire with that?
Yeah, I tested it with a Assegai 29x2.5 and DHR II 29x2.4.

Its really capable to have an enduro 165/170 sub 20kg bike with a 480wh battery, which for me is perfect.

I'm following your build closely as my CEF50 frameset arrives late Jan, keen to see your final build weight as I'm hoping to get to sub 20 kg
20.45 with dual 29, double down DHR and alu wheelset (EX1700 back, custom 350/EX511 front).
with my other carbon wheelset its 600g less.
Of course with 480w battery instead of the 700 I have its also more than 1kg less

One of the frame design issues that I brought up in the past was the lack of seatstay crossbar. It does have a beefy all-carbon rocker arm. So, it seemed unusual, thinking that it's a weight savings strategy. Yet is it at the expense of lateral support? I don't know if this true, and I don't feel it in the frame performance...yet!😵‍💫😁

However, after seeing some of the same lighter, full-powered designs (both carbon and alloy) from recent Eurobike internet video, is having no crossbar sound from an engineering perspective?🤔

Any legit structural/mechanical engineers in this forum that might be able to explain at a SIMPLE level if this is indeed structurally superior to having a crossbar vs. not? Just curious as a layperson. 🍻

Was there a structural problem due to the lack of this connecting piece on the arm? I ride enduro, I hadn't noticed it was missing and I'm a little worried.

Nice build you are making.
I have one cef-50 currently and want to upgrade some components, will keep an eye on your bike and feedback. If you could share some pictures would be great.

Also planning to buy a CEF69 for one of my kids with m510rs or 560rs more heavy climbing oriented.

thanks

I'm really happy with the build, for some reason this CEF50 rides WAY better than my first one, I don't know if it's the subtle change in the shock position, the revised rear part or that i'm using it at 210x55 now with full 165mm of travel and 170 in front (before I was 150 rear 160 front).

I can descend as fast as on my non-electric enduro, handles everything really fine and the weight is the main thing that I had to get used to, but probably i'll be building a 400w battery so it gets on the 19k mark.

The only thing I don't love is the M820 rattle when going downhill, but you get used to

Hi, do you know what exactly is rattling in the motor? I have same motor on different frame, but I don't experience anything coming from the motor. I have serviced my motor a few times and from what I see there is nothing that should be able to move inside. I have had a lot of other things rattle though..

its the subtle movement with the cranks back and forth and I hear a small rattle. Every single cable and housing is cloth taped (rear triangle) or with proper insulative guides (front triangle). Not doing ICR so its even quiter, but there's that rattle when going downhill that comes 100% from the motor, like between engaging points between cranks/shaft
