Levo Gen 4 Specialized Gen 4 Levo - Official Thread

Report of 1 month using the Levo 4. There were 500km of trails with varied lengths and elevations. The longest was 104km with 1800m elevation and the shortest was 48km with 900m elevation. I also participated and was champion in a 58km competition with 1000m elevation. On all the trails I never had any problems or incidents with the Levo 4. The Levo always behaved as expected and surpassed me in performance, strength and autonomy, for my type of use. On the longest trail I did, 104km with 1800m, I finished with 23% battery left. This Levo 4 is fantastic.

Yeah the Levo is fantastic! I made a Tour with 70km and 1600m elevation, only in microtune... 20% battery left. A very good range, but your range is crazy! What modes have you used? Or you are a very fit guy 😉. Can i ask about your weight and do you use the original soft Butchers? I think with other tires you can get a little more range!?

I bought a Levo Comp 4 and upgraded the suspension to electronics and a XX AXS groupset. I removed the original tires and put in Specialized Ground Control tires, which made it faster on the flat and even on climbs. I weigh 96 kg and train daily with a sports accessory.
 
In the 104 km that I did here in the region, there was a lot of flat terrain and descents, but also long climbs. So it was 60% using assistance and 40% without assistance. Of the 60% with assistance, 80% was between eco and trail and 20% turbo.

It's a 52V system, so they are stacked in a 14S3P configuration(also clearly seen in the upper picture) which results in the only possible cell size of 5,5000mAh(5,5Ah).

14x3,65V =cca 51V x 5,5Ah = cca 280Ah x 3(P) = 840Ah.

Well, that's a shame. 4P is only 14 more cells. The downtube is already huge. What's 14 more cells and another 3 pounds when it yields 33% more range?

Wait... the range extender battery is 280Wh. Lol, they could have avoided that by just going 4p. You would have had the same capacity as the current battery + range extender. But it looks like they took those last 14 cells and put them in another battery.

And Specialized still could have offered a 3P, or 2P pack for riders that want to shed a couple more pounds from the frame.

And also, I think the side mount is lame. I would have gone bottom mount like VADO and TERO. The 3P would sit flush with the bottom downtube surface, and the 4P would just have a slight hump on the battery (only over the cells, not the BMS section, 1.5" hump tops).

Here's a quick mockup of a gen 4 Levo with a bottom-mounted extended 14S4P 1120Wh pack.

You must be kidding right? 🤔 The existing bike is already heavy enough that it turns people off buying it because of that.
Another 14P group, only the cells would weigh 1,2kg add housing and it's at 1,4kg, that would raise the overall weight of the battery to 5,6kg. This is an emtb, the handling would be horrendous, and a humpback battery, trust me no one would buy that.
The upcoming 600Wh pack is a 2P configuration.

I have 2 ebikes that I alternate between on the same routes:
Specialized Vado 5.0 with Brose 2.2 and 36V 710Wh battery. 58lbs with rear rack, lights etc, and no fenders.
Kona Safariland with CYC Photon and 52V 1040Wh battery. 55lbs with integrated rear rack, lights etc, and no fenders.

The Photon build has 2X the real world range of my Vado and also weighs less. It literally goes twice as far while being more powerful. This is what colors my expectations for a next gen 52V Specialized drive system. I know more power AND double the range while keeping to similar weight should be achievable, especially at those crazy Levo gen 4 prices. My 52V 1040Wh battery pack on my photon build weighs 9.5lbs, and it has a heavy duty G10 encasing. For what Specialized charges for their batteries, I expect space age materials.

As for whether people would prefer giving up precious little triangle space and the hassle of a 2nd battery over an extended downtube battery with a bump... Maybe I'm just a weirdo, but I'll take the battery bump. (keep in mind though that I would ride a Bonnell 775 AM with zero embarrassment)

That would make a great touring bike for people like you, but a very poor enduro bike for people like me. That would make it even less likely for me to buy one, as it’d limit transport options for shuttling without the battery, which is one of the reasons why they made the battery removable.

Gear lash was definitely present on a cut open housing real demo motor unit that was on display at the the Riva del Garda bike festival. You could see exactly which 2 gears did it as you turned the crank axle back&forth.

At that point I didn't know what to think about it, as the demo bike I rode didn't have it. Now it seems like already several bikes after some miles down...get it.

Time will tell I guess if all develop it sooner or later, or if just some have it...due to manufacturing tolerances, although as far as I know it's almost impossible to acheive no backlash in gearing as there needs to be some room for material expansion due to heat.

One way is to decouple the main axle(like Bosch) that creates the back and forth movement responsible for gears lashing. Don't know exactly if Spesh did that or not.

I had a Maxxis DHR2 27.5x2.8 at first and it rubbed on the mud guard. Now Im running a Maxxis Assegi 27.5x2.6. We don't have thick mud here so it works great and no rubbing. The 2.8 would be fine without a fender.

The battery is too removable, IMO. Looks like a standard hex bolt is all it takes to pull the battery from the bike. Hopefully if Specialized keep the Tero line around they'll keep the locking battery design. I guess nobody is going to be riding the Levo to the coffee shop, or leaving it longer than 5 minutes anywhere. It sounds like you wanted the battery door to prevent an open cavity when the battery is removed. I get that. I just use a downtube sleeve over the battery bay to keep debris out with battery off. A door is obviously better though.

Speaking of enduro vs SUV ebike, what's crazy to me is that the Levo 4 alloy is only 1 pound lighter than the FS Tero X fully kitted out with rack and fenders and kickstand. I'll just wait and see how this tech trickles down the lineup, and just lurk this thread so I don't clog it up with more noise.

Mainly ECO 10/20 and AUTO - for steep climbs.
This range is simply impossible with a Gen3. The Gen4 pedals incredibly with little assistance.
The frame/suspension balance puts the previous model to shame.
I'm VERY HAPPY with the new bike!

Yes good range is possible with adjustments like you say. I am experimenting with all this with a 80% max charge. The SW charger makes that convenient
 
More people struggling with drive unit cuts power in and out?

The error in app/turbo studio:
Battery not detected.

This is what we have tryed:
-Changed drive unit
-changed lower battery holder with cable harness
-changed charging port
-changed cable harness TCU
-changed battery

Aften changing battery everything has worked flauwless for 2 weeks and 600km

But today same problem happend again! Error: no battery detected.

Drive unit cuts power on/off

There must be more people out there Having this issues?

So far in Norway i know of 1 more Bike, and 1 in this forum?
