On Friday, I bled the rear brake, Shimano XT. The fluid was leaking slowly down the plastic tube into the jam-jar; it was very dark! I could see the occasional bubble moving along the tube. All very satisfactory. Until I got a bit impatient and pressed the lever a few times. Then it all went very wrong!
I had remembered to remove the pads, but like a total dickhead

, I had forgotten to fit the block. You know what's coming next, don't you?
Yep, one of the four pistons popped clean out and the fluid starting leaking out! I say leaking, gushing would be a better word for it. Within seconds the reservoir at the lever end was empty and air was being drawn in. I managed to seal the reservoir to slow the flow, but what a mess!

I cleaned up and considered myself very lucky that I managed to get the piston back in to place. I started again, but running low on brake fluid now.
When I had finished, I cleaned up some more and finally tested the lever. Straight to the bar! Sh1T! Worse than before I started, much worse; at least the brake worked before.
None of the local bike shops have any Shimano brake fluid, not even Halfords. I didn't have enough brake fluid to redo from scratch, so I decided to tackle the next part as a lever bleed. I pumped the lever and then tied the lever to the grip with a zip tie. I left the bike overnight with the lever at the highest point and with the brake hose in a continuous downhill angle. It has worked before very successfully.
This afternoon (Saturday), I will complete the lever bleed. Put a syringe barrel with brake fluid in on to the lever body and then repeatedly compress the lever, pull it and let it snap back, tap the hose, etc. Loosen the clamp bolts and move the lever body back and forth. It is surprising how many bubbles emerge. Let's hope that happens again, because my grandson is coming over for a ride tomorrow and I'll need my rear brake.
Later edit: Bastards! nothing works! I have a lever that pulls to the bar but will go hard if I pump it 3-4 times. Not really good enough for those steeps where I'm going on Sunday. But I don't want to let down my grandson. Let's hope those are not my "famous last words"!
