You don't come across Seal's every day on a bike ride

Shadow seal.PNG

But I do see these on about a daily basis as there is a herd of around 40 of them that live in the hood. They are very shy though usually and never time to get the phone out for a shot. They must be getting used to me cause they didn't disappear into the woods with a crash like they usually do.

Aussie outback mid summer's a bit different to a European winter !

Tell us about the critter you're holding. If I was to see it in the Southwest U.S., I'd call it a Gila monster and give it space. They're the only venomous lizard on the continent. Since you're in Oz, I'm assuming that thing is poisonous. Everything you blokes have seems to be poisonous or deadly, especially your sheilas.

Lol
This is a Shingleback Lizard
Not poisonous but packs a mighty bite, much like the sheilas !

Fantastic frosty day in The Upper Coquet Valley, Cheviots..so myself & The EMF had to head for them thar hills..
That's not to say it wasn't muddy in places but the trails in the main were firm & dry ..in fact we were congratulating ourselves as to how clean the bikes still looked when that all went tits up in the last half mile on a track which the local farmer had been using to get feed to his cattle with his tractor ..so many thanks for the shared use of your mobi washer Wayne ..
The pics ...
This farmhouse used to be used as a tea room and did the biggest and best bacon sarnies you could possibly hope for ..alas no more 😪..just behind it is the first stiff climb of the day

The view looking back half way up

Was it only a few weeks ago that this track had us stumped on the way to the Ridge being covered in deep snow ..

20220117_105425.jpg

A good hour spent climbing to eventually get onto The Border Ridge ( Pennine Way )..a lot of which has had stone slabs laid due to erosion..( I blame those wooly hat walkers with there clodhopping feet..😉 )
On the left side of the fence is Scotland ..England on the right ..due to the beautiful clear weather it was a fantastic day for spotting haggis jumping around in the heather ..didn't manage to capture them

Highest point of the day at Windy Gyle ..

Above ..the only other person we saw all day in the hills doing a 15 mile loop..
It was all over way too soon ..the final drop to Barrowburn ..

As always great craic & company with The EMF ..and as the " Rose " in Alwinton was closed for the day ..the Newcastle Arms in Rothbury was a worthy substitute ..

Out here in the way western US they don't mess around with trees, they just mow them down with BA brush cutters

Reason for this is that they are putting in a new road to replace one, Bay Ocean Drive below, that got ruined by landslides 10yrs ago. It is going on right up the road from my place and is going to reveal our mushroom spots to the masses when it is done fall of '23. That's ok though cause we have other stashes that are only doable via bike. These were just the closest. Pic taken at end of project side top of clearcut:

We have a trail almost completed just to the north of the yellow line in the woods that follows old logging tracks almost completed so we won't be affected by the final result. But in the meantime it will be interesting to follow the progress of the construction I guess? It's already pretty impressive how that machine mows down trees in such an orderly fashion.

They sure do.
They sent these into our camps on Northern Vancouver Island. Mostly they harvested the second growth in the lower areas…but occasionally they would bite off more than they could chew. Imagine a very large tree with a hour-glass shape at the stump. That’s where I came in. They were not fun to fall and the operator usually got reprimanded but Wow were they fast.

There is no way I could match the photographic endurance of @The Hodge or the gorgeous backgrounds of the Swiss Alps. But I could try to turn your stomach, throw you into a petite mal seizure or cause a self banning …accidental of course.
I’ve been riding the hardtail lately because the Rail is being serviced with some upgrades. My wife has been busy with this pandemic thingy so she can’t get out as often as she’d like. Therefore I took a few hours to drain the battery on her PowerFly 5.
This was only a 25km ride and I stayed in the lower area of our mountain. It was foggy with a slight mist and any human activity was very rare (2souls). Here are some entrances to the lower trails.

Looks gorgeous - I reckon sunshine's overrated - casts shadows that confuse me as to where the line is heading.
Nice and quiet too 😉👍
