Orbea Rise Issue

Hi all,

Ive had a Rise for less than a week, amazing bikes, lots of fun.
Issue is, the chain ring has snapped, so the fun has stopped.
its completley come off the crank, the inner part is still there, mounted to the crank and is still attached, and the whole outta peice has come off.

anyone else had this issue?

i wasnt pedalling particularly the mud, flat ground, and POP, the things just snaps striaght off.

im worried that as this is a new bike, and the chainring (from what i read) was especailly made for the bike, its might be a design fault, or if its just a manufactoring fault, its may take some time to get a replacement.

Contemplating taking the bike back.
Dont spend near enough 7k on a bike to have issue like this. Fully unridebale and not an easily accessible part. So far bike shop said they would get back to me today, and now they are saying they will get back to me tomorrow.
Fingers crossed they can get a replacement soon. Very frustating as its costs a small fortune, plus its was a 4hr walk home. Could have been a whole lot worse.
Ive asked for two more so i can have a backup if it happens again, and if it does, i can replace it on the trial then replace the bike when im home.

if anyone has any ideas, of has had this issue, please get in touch.

Now that definitely shouldn't be happening! The E13 chainring is new to the market, previously pretty much all Steps motors came with the OEM Shimano spider and chainrings, over the last year we have seen some other brands start to make direct mount chainrings for the motor - I believe that E13 one is also what comes on the new Commencals.

Got to be a manufacturing fault, but on a personal level I am not a fan of E13 components, and I cant see why brands are using them over the Shimano OEM chainrings unless they are massively cheaper.

Wow! I hope this doesn't happen to me. if you end up fixing it yourself are you gonna stick with the e13 chainrings again? Also if you know what tool is needed to remove the chainring can you let us know what the part number is?

I haven't had that problem... yet. I've been putting my bike thru a lot of stress and so far everything is going Ok but the charge port cover. That part is absolute garbage and bad designed. Worst of all, Orbea is giving me a hard time to get a replacement.
I agree with you the bike is amazing and there's nothing close in the market. But Orbea customer service in the USA hasn't been shining...

Are you able to use any chain ring with the same number of teeth on the Rise? Or does it have to be this one?

I agree with you the bike is amazing and there's nothing close in the market. But Orbea customer service in the USA hasn't been shining...

I agree, I like the location, but the kettle tab thing is not going to last long. Gonna have to order a back up. Has yours broke?

I can't remember if shimano make a standard steps 32t ring ? You might have to buy any steps ring/ or spider and then a 32t 104bcd chainring to go on that - if you wanted to move away from the e13 Digestive biscuit.

Yes, it did break after 2 days. It's a piece of junk and I'm having a lot of problems with my dealer and Orbea to get that part. Orbea says I have to talk to the dealer and the dealer says Orbea is hard to talk. What a joke.

Not looking good. Just got my bike today, gonna have to keep an eye out for these issues. Thanks for the heads up. Looking to hit the trails tomorrow.

Nice to see e*thirteen on the forum. Any chance you know what the part number of the tools needed to remove the chainring. I already emailed e*thirteen support and they didn’t know and referred me to Shimano.

The reason I am asking is without being able to remove the chainring you cannot get access to the motor if there are any issues.
 
Not a great advertisement for E-13 products :eek:

PS - Just saw that they have been in touch with you via this forum which is a big thumbs up from them, though and offer of an immediate replacement and organise with your LBS to fix it would be much better

Pro tip: get the broken one warrantied, and ask them to sell you a spare. Downtime sucks.

Wouldn’t you normally remove the chainring nut from the inside after the crank arm has already been removed?
 
Yes you need to remove cranks first, then remove the chainring.

On this motor the cranks are separate from the chainrings. Once you remove the drive side crankarm the chainring is attached to the motor and spindle.

Got it, thanks for clarifying. Your posted pics also make more sense where the broken cassette piece was left attached.

..........or a direct mount chainring if you can find out the offset of the original.
 
Hey Guys - This customer was sorted and sent a replacement. We are getting the ring back for engineering to look at. To date, this is the only failure of this type we have seen on this model ring.
Great to see you guys pro active in these Forums. Any chance you have or will make this chainring in a 30T? I Currently have a Rise on order and a 30T is what I ride on my analog bike and what I’m used to.
 
i always cringe a little when i see an e thirteen component on a bike, everything other than their chain guides are pretty terrible.
