Who’s had a new knee and has it affected your riding?

I am fifty seven and had a full knee replacement on the 4th May 22. I have had knee problems for 25 years with the past 12 years being bone on bone. Before the operation I could ski, mountain bike, ride an enduro motorcycle and windsurf with pain but I walked poorly and my leg was the shape of a bow. The day after the operation I could walk with a stick and had 90 degrees of knee bend. I was able to drive after three weeks and ride an ebike for gentle exercise after four weeks. After about eight weeks I had 130 degrees of knee bend and was able to ride moderate routes. For the past five weeks I have felt felt confident undertaking 30+ mile fairly had rides. Whilst on holiday I managed to walk steep single track volcano without any knee pain.
A good recovery seems to be about sticking to the recommended physio, doing the boring exercises and not rushing back to activities too early
For me the operation has been a total success.:)
Hi,
Good to hear a positive report on knee replaement.I first damaged mine 40 years ago and have had 9 ops since. Now it is time I think to have it replaced if it can be fixed to the worn out bone. Not looking forward to the pain that is universally mentioned... Have you had any problems and have there been anytimes when you have been concerned about damaging it? I have problems walking down mountains. Do you feel secure in doing that?

Hi Keith
During the last six months I have been able to use my knee without any issues. Mountain biking and walking including descending mountains no problem. I am more careful when riding my enduro motorbike and skiing off piste than I was before the operation. I have had no pain since the operation. On the downside I need a new hip, which I will have replacement ASAP.😂

Thanks Phil,
Hope the hip goes well, several people have told me that after hip relacement thay get less pain than they were experiencing from day one ,so if you have had the pain of a TKR a hip should be a walk in the park(sorry....) Did you wait for the NHS or go private? I am amazed you can ski I'm surprised you can ski at all given the twisting moment on the joint. Do you use clip in pedals?

All the Best
Keith

Before my knee operation clip in pedals irritated my knee so avoided them. I prefer flat pedals especialy on a ebike.

My wife has had one at the age of 50, now at 57 she’s just bought her 2nd ebike , a levo , it is a truly very big operation with a lot a discomfort at first , she can’t kneel on it even now After all these years after , but she can ride her bike with no issues, the key is get the thing moving as soon as possible, I can vouch for that too after having a serious motox accident, where I nearly lost my right leg , my knee is full of steel and screws right down to my ankle , and straight after my they had my knee moving on a machine , i‘m sure it’s these early responses are key .
good luck
Agreed

Just as an update for anyone facing a knee replacement, I’m 58 and 2 1/2 years down the line now, and can report that I have no issues at all, peddling the bike no problem whatsoever, riding sports bike no problems, walking I used to struggle round the supermarket now I’m doing 8-12 mile walks in the lakes, dales and peaks, and I work as a plumber and can kneel all day without too much trouble, just a little stiffness when I stand up, but that goes as soon as I start walking.

I am not on forums much anymore, but thank you for the update

My left knee has been replaced for 5 years but last October i had my ACL and meniscus repaired on the right---- it seemed to take less time getting over the replacement and i have better performance out of it than i do the repaired original equipment

My cycling limitations are more based on me not riding enough than any issues with the new (well, now 5 years old ) knee -- but i am seriously considering selling my motocross bikes. Between a shoulder surgery and the aforementioned knee surgery last year, the wretched things are costing me precious time now more than enhancing my life.
Was speaking to a lady who slipped and fell on her replaced knee and damaged it to the point she had to go back in for re-work and that scares me a bit --- however admittedly there was an age gap -- im 54 and this lady was 72 years young so there is another level of fragility there
