GOBAO ECVT EMTB Mid-Drive Motor

The rumours are that the Levo G5 will come with a gobao system.
This would be profound if true! And would make total sense for likes of Specialized. Gobao could easily become the new Brose for them. This is exactly what we want. Competition in the ebike motor space again, not to mention and instant validation of the Motor-Transmission-Unit MTU space (need to stop calling it MGU).

Heard this a few months ago, in Spesh bikeshop from another country than mine (France). I thought it was a joke , and still think it is one (US company buying chinese motor ? Especially in the actual context. But heh, if Spesh wakes up and delivers a proper new Levo, and not a fridge on wheels, they can have my money).

At higher outputs. cog belts are more efficient than metal chains because they lack the joint friction and metal-on-metal wear that rob power over time. Belts are also clean, silent and require zero lubrication.

This Gobao system also supports a chain should you wish to run one.

As for maintenance: I can only see a sealed unit containing all of the drive and gearing requiring less maintenance, over an exposed system, with a RD hanging off the back of the bike.
I am curious what source the information came from. My understanding is you are correct in regards to better noise control although, Roller chains generally remain more efficient than cogged synchronous belts at higher power outputs.

While cog belts do eliminate metal-on-metal joint friction, they experience significant energy losses from hysterece (the constant flexing and deforming of the rubber/polymer material) and tooth shear under heavy loads. High-quality metal chains running with proper lubrication typically achieve efficiencies of 98 to 99 percent slightly outperforming cog belts in high-torque, high-horsepower applications.

What if the motor is blocked in one rotational direction? That way it can amplify the ratio, but if it is dead, it will be stuck at its lowest ratio. And there won’t be pedal assistance. But it could work.
I've looked into planetary gearing a bit. It's very flexible and you can configure it in a number of ways. The sun gear is sentral here, as is the possibility to lock it with an electromagnetic brake (no current = locked) or a sprag clutch.

1) Sun gear is only allowed to go forward: When stationary, you are in the hardest gear. When spinning faster, the gear becomes progressively easier
2) Sun gear is only allowed to go backwards: When stationary, you are in the easiest gear. When spinning faster, the gear becomes progressively harder
3) Sun gear can go both ways: When stationary, you are in a middle-ish gear

So you are right, it is possible to lock the sun gear when the battery is dead. What gear you're in when this happens is determined by how the planetary gear is configured.

Planetary gears are very clever!

Hardly real competition given Gobao is another Chinese company which, like the rest of them, is undoubtedly controlled by the state!

Because the U.S.A don't massively support their industry, nor pirat E.U. / outside US top tech industries ?

Occident : the goods
rest of world : the bads ?

Oh god ...
