I think everyone should sort of chill out and just buy their current favorite bike.

For sure technology continues to march on, but IF this stuff even turns out to be an actual improvement, you are looking at 3-5 years before it's proven and you can actually purchase it in your favorite bike.

You can wait for an eternity for that next big thing. Then you'll be frustrated that it's been shown, but you can't get it for another 8 months.

Just buy a bike and be happy.

I mean you'll continue to comment and make BS claims about whatever actually comes out without even seeing or riding it anyway 😂

Both this and the Gobao, I am almost certain, will be on bikes next year. To me both products do not look that far off production.

Maybe, and I hope so. But then I only keep bikes for 2 years at a time anyways and I think that's pretty average for this crew. Realistically how long would I be waiting to buy a replacement Wild with this technology? I mean from introduction of the Amflow to delivery of the Wild with the M2S was nearly 3 years! And importantly, will it actually be better for mountain biking?

I shopped for my current bike for sometime, by the time I had it ordered the next best thing was already announced, and if I had decided to wait again I still would not have such an amazing bike to ride to this day.

Bikes are very good now and lots of fun. If you like what you are riding now and feel no need to upgrade, sure, wait it out and see. But if you need a bike, choices have never been better.

Have to admit that I'm surprised that Avinox is showing the MGU unless it's REALLY ready for release. Because for a segment of the buying public, they just cancelled their M2 bike orders in mass.

It must be a bit frustrating to be a bike manufacturer these days!

Its Fast moving China not slow westerner's 😂😂😂 I'm one of the Westerner (from France)🤭
Remind me how long it took them to get best electric car in the world starting from ground Zero?

Maybe they knew Gobao was showing their's? Can you imagine what the show coverage would be like if Gobao was the only player? The Gobao does appear to be ready to go.

Odd two companies release ebike motors that are cvt within two days of each other.
I don't think so. Gobao by all accounts have some former Avinox employees so I'm sure both were aware of what each other had in the pipeline.

That's what I plan to do. I hope a lot of people cancel their orders for M2S bikes so there's more inventory for the rest of us. 😁

Yes, I'm interested in the new tech, but I'll just wait for the reviews. Who knows, it might not even be good for actual mountain biking.

I am very curious if anyone at Eurobike saw any shifters on the prototypes. MG can integration to the next level and hopefully they do it like Orbea.

really odd. ever heard of eurobike? apparently not.
That wasnt my point. My point is within 2 days two come out with cvt motor. Ebikes and euro bike has been around 20 years. Very odd they both come at the same on at the same time.

That’s massively pessimistic if I may say so. 😁

There’s already a massive amount of SRAM equipped bikes out there, they’ll break derailleurs, wear out cassettes and chains and they’ll be happy to sell them to your bike shop/retailer so that folks can replace them.

There’s also a massive market out there that isn’t EMTB, so that will still be serviced.

Thirdly, who is to say what they’re working on now for release over the next couple of years.

Successful companies evolve and adapt, everybody thinks Ericsson, Nokia and BlackBerry are dead, but they’re bigger than before just in different markets.

I think the announcement of the passing of SRAM is premature, and the derailleur for that matter, it’ll be with us for a while yet.

Think I'm going to be canceling my M2S Ekano 3 order (September build date) and I have a feeling I'm not alone. This is going to make all previous emtbs look quite dated. The current generations feel like a half step between analogue bikes and this future. I'm happy to keep pedaling for another year while I wait for these bikes.

Lots of people have been anticipating something like this and SRAM and Shimano etc must have had an idea it was coming (as well as Bosch and TQ and Specialized and Mahle etc) so they probably have something in the works that needs expediting now. SRAM was already working on motors and then they kind of went quiet, maybe this is why?

Unsure what it would cost to produce this type of motor compared to something like the M2S. If they were the same, then in theory could brands reduce pricing since you're not paying for a cassette & derailleur?
Considering the cost of everything is what people are willing to pay; I don't see this technology delivering a less expensive solution to the consumer.

What DJI want is for the mountain biking community to do their beta testing before coming out with a V2 and probably a V3 motor for the non-mountain biking market - where the big profits are to be made.

Avinox MG Concept: no derailleur, no cassette, infinite gearing

Avinox has shown its new MG Concept at Eurobike.

MG stands for Motor Gearbox, but the interesting bit is that this isn’t just a normal gearbox motor. From my interview, Avinox described it as using stepless virtual gearing.

That means no traditional rear drivetrain:

  • No derailleur
  • No cassette
  • No fixed mechanical gear steps
  • Gear changes in around 0.1 sec
  • Can be run as 4 gears, 5 gears, 12 gears, or full auto
  • AI-supported auto shifting
  • Similar power target to M2S
  • Chain or belt compatible
  • Potential motor lock anti-theft
  • Regen braking being explored
The best way to think about it:

A normal bike has fixed gears, like steps.

This is more like a ramp. The system has effectively infinite ratios underneath, then the software lets you decide how you want that gearing to feel.

Avinox had concept bikes from Canyon, Commencal, Mondraker and Forbidden using the MG system.

Still only a concept, likely not production until next year, but this could be one of the biggest drivetrain changes in eMTB for years.
This is a bit like Katie Price revealing her much modified baps in the "dodgy as" pseudo news media.
