Ally...probably because aluminium is usually an alloy anyway. Most common ally in bikes are 6000 and 7000 series. 6000 is aluminium+magnesium and 7000 aluminium with zink copper and magnesium. 7000 series is the lightest and stiffest.

Get some with 0.1% Scandium in it! It increases tensile strength by 50%. The Russians made the fins from it for their air-launched anti-submarine missiles, so that they could punch through the ice and still be able to steer the missile towards the submarine.

Apparently, a 50% increase in strength on a bike frame makes it 15% lighter and puts it in close contention with carbon fibre. Kona put a lot of effort into Scandium dosed alloy frames because they were not convinced about CF. They gave up after a number of years, but not before I bought a 2009 Kona Dawg Supreme. Yes it was very light, and tough too. :)

Different aluminium alloys have different characteristics, some beneficial, some not. E.G whilst 7000 series is the lightest and stiffest it is not easy to form into bends without weakening it. Some alloys are also less able to be welded. In windsurfing the best booms are carbon but they are very expensive ( £1100 for a 190cm!). The stiffest ally booms use 2 different types of ally bonded ( not welded) together.....7000 series for the straighter section and 6000 series for the radius bend.
