Prepping for a full bearing swap. I've had a theory that usually only the low hanging bearings wear quick because they take all the abuse but every single bearing on the whip is gritty. Second time I'm doing it on this bike but since it's rain for the next ten years in the forecast, might as well go full Doddy while there's no riding to be had.
Maybe if the bike was a bit cleaner when you change bearings, they might last a bit longer? Just considering. :unsure:

No because they're sealed bearings yano with covers & everything. What you can see is the initial disassembly with nothing removed from the bike other than the bolts holding the rear triangle on, which apparently didn't occur to anyone. But since a few of you are a bit judgy out of the traps, here's what a bit of progress & cleaning looks like.

Levo got some love this week.

* Got the suspension serviced and tuned from Stillwell Performance here in Scottsdale.
* Had a slightly bent 155mm GX crank so I put on a set of Hope (narrow offset, not Specialized offset) 155mm cranks. If anyone cares the Hope are 10g lighter than GX, but their overall length is shorter, and they’re also slimmer and stronger.
* Figured new cranks deserved fresh pedals so I put a set of PNW Loam Gen 2 pedals on. These have the updated axles after PNW found some that weren’t heat treated properly.
* lastly I installed the Specialized motor update that delivers more power, torque, and improved power delivery.

Psyched to ride!

One more little modification… while watching my action cam footage I noticed the battery rattling a bit from the tolerance being a tiny bit too lose on the mount. Put two small pieces of Gorilla Tape through the hole on the battery to snug it up and act like a small damper. IMG_1886.webp
 
After yesterday's mudfest, an agreeable afternoon giving the bike some heavy maintenance. Cleaned & regreased the crank seals, cleaned out the dropper internals & gave the fork a quick 50 hour service & she's all good to go again.

Your level of service is a little above mine, but I was curious if added a bearing seal kit or just some appropriate grease behind the castle/spider nut? How many times do you change the castle nut?

Btw, your bike did look gross 🤮 with that mud.😉
 
Dunno if it's a set thing but I'm on I think, my 3rd one in 7000 miles but only as the previous two eventually stripped their threads. They're fairly weak aluminium and narrow threads & I definitely spin mine on & off more than average.

To that end, I now make sure the crank threads are super clean first, in order to prolong the life of the nut but I suspec most of the wear comes from torqueing & no I have never added grease behind the nut but reckon some on the crank threads might be a good idea.

You may already know this but the bearing seal kit (for Bosch CX) comes with a small tube of water resistant grease,(green) and replacement bearing seals for drive-side and non-drive side.

I use a liberal amount of grease (after cleaning) for both sides. I also replace the castle nut after 2 r&r’s. Those alloy threads can cause problems. Not really a big concern if you’re just removing cranks…but regreasing at least once a year is a good idea.

Maybe it was you that posted that vid of the r&r …I can’t remember. 🤷🏼‍♂️
 
Yes that is my video. Agree the castle nut is under engineered but otoh it's never been high in my thinking since it's a pretty cheap part & I can get replacements easily. I would say on average I spin it off the bike about eight times a year, something like that.

In summer maybe twice but as you saw yesterday, winter is a different story here & I pay much closer attention to keeping water out of the motor. Seems to be working, 7k on the original motor here in wetworld is a decent return for some grease & a couple of cheap seals.

Oneup have discontinued the V2 droppers and they’re not restocking spares so I actually bought the seal / slide bearing kit from eBay (although Oneup have other parts in their Webshop)

Instructions are one Oneup’s website and are good, basic tools are needed as is some patience 🤣

Next job is fitting new bearings in my Pendulum pedals 🙈

When I serviced ours (mine and wife's) I also found a strip of black electricians tape around the cartridge as in your pic. I took it off the first post I serviced then thought "perhaps it's meant to be there?" So called Oneup and yes, it's meant to be there. Stripped the post again and put another piece of electricians tape in the same place. Forgot why it's there, reduces vibration or something.

Looks like Nick at Nobl built these up for me. Got a great deal from Tim.likes.bikes and couldnt resist. Hope I like the feel, but can say they do feel noticeably lighter in my hands.

I have another set of TR37’s with Vespers, but with Sapim D-light spokes. Im going to run the two sets back to back over a long weekend trip, and see if I can notice a difference. Apparently, they are more compliant.

I had a set of Nobl37's. Absolutely bombproof. I look forward to hearing your thoughts. I haven't considered using them on an eeb; I think it'd be too heavy for them.

Trust me, my exact concern. So many ppl tell me otherwise, so I figured I’d try them.

They are for my 181.2 Plaid build, but Im headed to the bike park two weekends from now and will be testing them out on the Levo.
