What did you do to your EBike this week?

Seeing as we are talking about tips to prevent fraying... Here's my tip, two tips actually).

When replacing the gear cable the inner wire has a tendency to fray, which is why you are supposed to fit a soft metal cap on the end. But that cap can come off and fraying commences. First tip is to fix the fray by fastening a small zip tie around the wire and unwinding it slowly up the frayed wire. The zip tie puts all the frayed wires back in place. Second tip is to put a drop of superglue onto the end of the wire when new (or before your remove the zip tie from the last bit of frayed wire). The liquid superglue runs down the spiral wires and then sets them into a solid mass. :)
Be careful not to put too much on or you will end up with a zip tie glued to your gear cable! :ROFLMAO:

I still fit the soft metal cap, even when I've glued it, because even if not frayed you can still spike yourself on it.
Yah, a little superglue on a fraid wire, just before the crimped metal cap goes on. I’m gonna do that. The zip tie over the wire is clever also.

OneUp ebike bars now chopped and installed, along with some PNW Loam XL grips.

Routing the motor controller cable with no internal cable guide kit was easier than I expected... whilst still connected to the switch I just fed it through the hole at the grip end of the bars until I could see the end appear in the hole in the middle of the bars, then pulled it out with some ceramic tipped tweezers and connected it to the motor wire. Things got a bit trickier from here though, as with the Orbea bars I could then feed the two connected cables back into the bars to hide everything, but the connector wouldn't fit in the OneUp hole with both cables attached so I had to do some jiggery-pokery to get the connector to sit inside the stem in the gap between the bars and the steerer. Luckily the stem has a small slot in the base for cables to enter/exit so I fed it from there into the bars and now everything looks neat and tidy.

Weather forecast looks absolutely shit for the foreseeable future though so I don't think I'll be able to ride it for a while, which is a bit depressing. I'll need to go look up some remedies for Seasonal Affective Disorder as I don't think I've seen a hint of blue sky for weeks and it's doing my head in o_O

it's shit in the Surrey Hills too! thick gloop for miles. the first time I did up the headset I squashed the wire! I put some heatshrink on and it's been fine but even more to squeeze in now!

Looks like tomorrow is shit or bust round here.

I think you may have mentioned that to me before (or someone else did), so I was extra careful... especially given the price of a replacement cable!

Vitamin D tablets.

Yeah, I think I need to get on the vitamins... or maybe a SAD lamp!

@RustyMTB we've got wind and rain until the forecast ends on the 16th. I hope we get a good spring to make up for it!

Still time to make it out to Scottsdale for the WM Open PGA event this weekend. No rain here for the foreseeable future!

These ones are all you need. Cheap too! Recommended to me by @Mikerb

I take the 4000iu +K2 but two tablets for 8000ui as the boffins have upped the recommended dosage to 8800iu, and I also take Magnesium Glycinate 1500mg. Keeps the winter bugs away, helps with arthritis in the knees when the temperature and air pressure changes and no winter blues.

Replaced the shagged DHR ii's with High Roller 3's on our Rails.

Accompanied by Bonnie (2 years old, adopted from a local cat rescue centre) who came through the rain to the outside garage to keep me company. Here she's drying off this evening.

Upsizing my front rotor from 200mm to 220mm so I ordered a new rotor from Lewis and a black/black +40 adapter from Better Bolts.View attachment 175336
Since this post I decided to buy a second 220mm rotor for the rear since the +20 adapter i'm removing from the fork could be used for the rear brake. However, Lewis reached out saying that they're out of stock in the US, and China is shutting down for their new year. ETA early March. Not really an issue except exercising my patience.

Prepping for a full bearing swap. I've had a theory that usually only the low hanging bearings wear quick because they take all the abuse but every single bearing on the whip is gritty. Second time I'm doing it on this bike but since it's rain for the next ten years in the forecast, might as well go full Doddy while there's no riding to be had.

I truly can't relate to doing a bearing service on a bike with dirt still caked on. 🙈

Listen boys, by the time that thing goes back together, you'll be able to eat your dinner off it if you're the kind of weirdo who likes that sort of thing. For now, it's in glorious, dirty disassembly, just as our lord & protector, Calvin Jones intended.

It's a bearing change, not a vasectomy. Pull yourself together pal.
Hey, it's not my bike; do whatever you want. I just find it difficult to relate to that way of working. Personally my first step in a bearing service would be to make sure everything is clean. Feels like eating off dirty dishes.

Yes, I would want those areas cleaned (soap n’ water and someone else’s toothbrush). Less chance of grit in there. 👍🏻

Your response doesn't even make sense
Well it does if you're capable of even a tiny amount of abstract thought and/or equipped with a sense of humour, neither of which are in evidence. I do notice you're the guy who shows up for every five dollar argument in town though & here you are again, unable to resist. Y'all have a great day now.

I think our ultimate Guru, Calvin Jones, would’ve cleared and cleaned the area before removing or installing bearings. My limited background tells me that that makes sense.

As far as eating off of dirty dishes …I would eat off of my sports illustrated calendar without utensils or a napkin. 😜( when it’s NEW!)
