Pic of the Day

Hand it to anyone i see on a real bike as I call them at Tarland . I used to love a good climb back in the day , before Tarland was ever thought about. . Burma road and Fungle / Firmouth springs to mind .

I don't mind a good climb on the gravel bike but lately the MTB seems to feel like a bit of a slog. It's definitely the rider and not the bike though!

We were actually meant to be doing Heartbreak Ridge last Sunday but the weather was a bit pish so we opted for Tarland instead. I think when we do end up doing HBR we may hire eBikes from Bike Station Ballater, then we can do Masterblaster and some of the other nearby trails too.

Kirkhill and Blacktop in Aberdeen are my local trails, which don't really need eBikes in terms of elevation/effort but it would definitely mean getting more runs in which is always good.

HBR only did it once 3 years ago im thinking. I walked two bits I seem to remember, on my own 5pm stay safe. Funny enough I did master blaster that day as well. I need a guide in that woods I think. Spoiled for choice we are , driving and cost if fuel is my issues sometimes. Enjoy. 60s is about the right age for Ebike ,but you won't appreciate it till you get one.

"Rommel's Road" is the name given to this evocative old military road built by the military engineers of the Royal Italian Army but victoriously travelled by the young Swabian lieutenant in the conquest of Mount Matajur during the battle of Caporetto.

Lot is history there. I have not explored the mountains of Italy yet, that will be my next destination for discovering new trails. I understand that Italy still has many mountain roads, tunnels, and mule tracks that were originally built or expanded during World War II and even World War I in some regions for military purposes across the Alps and Apennines, in very rugged terrain in the Dolomites, Aosta Valley, and along the Austrian and Swiss borders were originally military roads.

Nice easy ride today in 15C with the sun shining. Lovely soft leaf carpet coming down from the Trundle ...

First wet ride for a while ..had to give myself a talking to as Im getting too used to this non activity ........
That is how the descent into senility and decrepitude starts. There you are, as fit as a butcher's dog, riding 100 miles every week. Then you get ill or have a bad accident. Whatever, you are stuck at home or hospital for what seems like ages. Your fitness declines and your mojo with it. You struggle to motivate yourself; the threat of bad weather keeps you indoors and so on.
Before you know what has happened, you haven't ridden for weeks and weeks and you are slowly finding other things to do. I know a cure. :)

Get yourself a new bike! :)

It is easy to justify. I mean, how long do you have left being able to ride a proper mountain bike in proper mountain bike locations? How many actual years, be honest. Life is too precious not to maximise your remaining mtb years.
So get yourself a new emtb! Do you know anyone on their deathbed, who said that they wished they had spent less time on an emtb? No, I don't either!

This made me laugh ..but thanks for your concern 😂..
There are various reasons for not riding for ooooh..let me see ..about a fortnight ..mainly a bout of dog ( puppy) sitting for my daughter and her partner while they took a mini break ..which included lots of walks .
Walking also plays a big part at least twice a week when Im working ..I choose the day(s) when I want / if I want its totally flexible which is a fantastic way to top up the pension and not to totally vegetate at home ..
My big mate who answered you above has also been missing lately due to the fact that within a day of each other both his wife & daughter had accidents which meant that he was the only fit & available driver and quite rightly he didn't want to put himself at risk of injury while they are recovering ..
Finally a new bike you say ..hmm ..while that would be nice maybe somewhere down the line I will..but right now couldn't really justify one as Im still loving my Whyte and it continues to be everything I need ❤️..
Finally having recently replaced the second car which died... with with a racy little number should I need an adrenaline rush away from the bike ..this little beauty can scare me shitless if my foot gets a bit heavy ..
Senility can take a swivel ..it seems a long way off 🤣😂

It’s been a tough few weeks on the South East Northumberland Riviera. My two patients are recovering well (with my daughter being a single mum, I’m the only able bodied driver for two families)
So it shouldn’t be too long before me and @The Hodge are back in our beloved Cheviot Hills, no doubt covered from arsehole to breakfast time in sleck and sheep detritus……can’t wait 👍
I have two granddogs I walk everyday that’ll keep me ticking over nicely until I’m back on the Great Whyte. As for a new bike my 2020 150 RS is just about run in….
To you all, Stay Vertical and enjoy the Autumn trails.

Tough day at Tarland haha. First there at 9am think I seen about six folk in the four hours I was there. So mild I had to take jacket off on climb up. Dry trails ,their webpage says if you actually see a puddle go through it rather than either side as it wears the trails . Never seen a puddle but it's only November right enough. Thinking today if you did all the trails there on a real bike it would be some workout , 24 miles 4500 ft of climbing. I wouldn't manage that anymore.

Good effort! I did just under 10 miles and 1954ft of climbing there last weekend and was absolutely fooked on my real bike.

Yes my real bike climbing days are over. Tried a steep road hill on my Dawes tourer a few Monaco got about 300mtrs and about turned.

Put the Trek Rail away ( until the snow fly’s) and warming up the Trek Fuel. It’s Full-Face time.

Car got in my way. I might have scratched it. No plates and I can’t tell what make it is?😉
Ohh ohh a challenge ..

OK, I'm guessing a 1970-1974 Toyota Corolla Coupe - 2nd generation ..

Based on the shape of the rear side windows. The shape of the rear window and boot (trunk). The rear light clusters. The rusted out rear wing vent. The Shape and thickness of the C-Pillars. The unusual C pillar mounting of the filler cap. The top and bottom door trim shapes.

I suspect it's not a viable renovation :)

I think you’re onto the right track. Did Toyota make a car called Pony? There a trail called close by called Pony. (See pics). There’s also a trail called Dawg. (Dawg n’ Pony) ??

I think "Pony" cars, or the expression is an americanism for a sporty coupe/convertible ? Mustangs are the main one everyone referred to historically that I remember. Your Corolla has sporty wheels, so it was either modified or was a special sporty model. Hence your "Pony" trail name. No idea about the Dawg.. Unless Dawg was the owner and a truly horrendous driver looking at the car damage .. :)

I have absolutely no idea why someone thought Pony was a logical word to use to describe a sporty coupe or convertible. Maybe they were rare like rocking horse sh1t 🙃
