Crestline x DJI - RS 181 SPECTRE Edition

Yeah, the Amflow thing is wearing off.. Now we're hearing about rattles, battery weight placement,,175mm post insertion limit, VPP being shunned by all the big player!. My opinion... wait a few years while they perfect this new breed of motors with the right frame and support to keep it on the dirt, not the shop.
You'll always be waiting. Something newer and better will always be in the pipeline. If you read around, some folks are getting rattle with the gen5 bosch. Nothing is perfect. Buy what makes you happy and ride.

I’ll be too old, grey and crippled by the time the “perfect” emtb is released. This one is close.
Went for a ride this morning, annoying rattling is still there but the climbing ability of this thing amazes me. Like it has traction control. For whatever reason it climbs so much better than my previous Bosch G4 Race Crestline. Somehow not spinning out on vertical slick rock and roots.
I also now have no interest in ridding a derailleur drivetrain without auto/smooth shift. It’s so awesome bombing down into a dry creek ravine while down shifting at the last minute (without spinning the cranks) to be in the right gear to climb out the other side! And having the screen set up to easily show what gear you’re in. 😍

Is it the motor or the chassis that climbs better than your Gen4 Crestline?

I believe both. My RS181 has a longer WB (went from an RH3 to an RH4) and more forward battery weight(I don’t notice), but shorter CS(440mm)
I believe the DJI is also communicating with the rear tire rotation at a faster rate due to the rotor speed sensor ring having so many slots to read the position and being a smaller circumference than a Bosch rim valve magnet or any other spoke magnet spinning around. DJI firmware knows the angle of the bike and what gear you’re in so maybe it can detect when the rear tire is slipping while climbing?? And slightly backs the power off?
The DJI feels like it has more torque as well.
I don’t know but my climbing is noticeably better. Sketchy climbs aren’t as sketchy now, and have boosted my confidence to try even steeper technical climbs. I don’t feel the urgency to be as ready to unclip from a pedal to throw a foot down in the case of a rear tire spin out or stall out……just stay balanced and keep pushing down on those pedals!

Exactly.

The cycle (pun!) is always the same. The new thing comes out and pushes the envelope and is better than before...but in time people figure out that it has some things that could be improved. At some point, usually years, they have worked out all of the bugs and it's reliable, quiet, etc. and you're ready to buy this dialed product and right then the newer version is released that's lighter/ faster/ whatever and the cycle begins anew.

You'll wait forever waiting for the 'best'. Buy something, enjoy it, sell it, buy another, repeat.

Im missing the speed limit option too. Pretty frustrating. I was texting with Troydon on Thursday about it. He said it should be there based on the current software. He said he would email dji (avinox). I haven't received an update yet.
hi did you ever find the speed limit option for 28mph in the u.s mine is missing as well my amflow has it but on my crestline its missing any help on this topic would be apreciated .

That’s right 💡…..swipe up on the screen! For more setting options…..no more beeping when I push buttons.
I took the battery from 18% to 6% beading the rotors, got them nice and hot! That was fun in the neighborhood darkness.
I also noticed the motor produces a dim blinking light that glows through the voids in the bash guard onto the ground.

This is an unsolved mystery. My SPECTRE has Speed Limit option while my friends’ Amflow and Teewing do not. We are all on exactly same software/firmware.

Having said that, if wanting to increase the max assist speed to 28, it’s better to do so with vpn as it’s set once and it’s done. It does not change when bike is powered off/on.
Using Speed Limit to enable Class 3 mode, it’s changed back to Class 1 when bike is powered off/on.

Avinox just got back to me and said my display might not be for U.S and consult with crestline , so strange every other new feature is there from the software update just no speed limit selection , troydon shot me a text saying he will call me today maybe he has a solution if he does i will update the forum , its kinda frustrating because my friends that have the rs181 all have the speed limit selection and we all take the road to the local trails and they are flying by at 28mph lol

this is the correct answer

After putting more miles on the bike I’m getting more and more impressed with the range! Just did a 25.5 mile, 6100ft vert ride! 12% left at the end, 90% of the time in auto mode and even pushed a buddy a mile or so when his battery was getting close to 0 😂. Didn’t feel like the motor tapered off at all, consistent power delivery the entire time! And the percentage of battery seems to be pretty linear. With my ep8 the last 2 bars gave me maybe 3-4 miles, pretty drastic cutoff of power. All that being said I think the bike will absolutely rip with a 600watt battery, the bike feels good but you do notice the weight of the 800 riding higher up. I think that’s also why a lot of the reviews of the upcoming e-Druid seem to be surprised/favor the ‘lite’. Just have a feeling with the 600 batt it would absolutely come alive!

Somewhere on this thread folks have mentioned that 600wh batteries aren’t going to be available until 2026? Anymore info on this or where and when the smaller battery will be available?

Nothing that I’m aware of, just simply stating what I think would be rad! I wanted the 800 for bigger rides, so working out well for now anyway.

Rider weight. ? Just curious

Id love to get 600 wh too

FWIW, I had to set up my transmission at sag. Otherwise it shifted great but would not drop from 7 to 8, very odd. I read about this being an issue on other Crestlines and SRAM recommends it for frames with a more than average rear wheel travel/chain growth. YMMV

I wish the BB cover was made of a tougher material. It’s super brittle and cracks very easily. I’ve hit lots of stuff with my other bikes and the plastic deforms or shears, it doesn’t chip. It appears to be glass filled nylon. 10% is the most I would go but this looks like it’s 30-40% glass filled which actually makes it chip a lot easier.
I would love to get the 3D model so I can 3D print something myself that a bit beefier and also protrude more to protect the 36t chainring (ABS filament). Or make a metal bashguard.

This damage is cumulative, after 4 rides, 90 miles 😆.

Don't like to think about the load on the motor if the chainring crunches into stuff that can do that level of damage.

I grabbed a pair of needle nose pliers and was able to break off a bunch of little pieces (kinda like when Thanos snaps his fingers).

Too much glass fibers in the material. Need to use 100% Nylon, ABS or PP instead of 30-40% glass filled material.

Using the right material, the plastic would just flex/bend instead of break off

I would buy the small bash guard with that Crestline also offers that exposes the chain ring and then I would just buy the E13 bash ring. However the E13 one only goes to 34 tooth.

Is your rear shock set to spec for your weight?

While accidents happen, damage like that shows either you're using your bike as the slider on the rocks, or your rear shock set way too soft.

Or do you just roll over jump lips?

Some of the damage was from loose rocks/shale flicking upwards and removing chunks of material off the BB. The loose shale I ride over sounds like I’m riding over broken glass at times.

I’ve never smashed into anything hard. Just climbing up and over steep rocks at very slow crawling speeds and occasionally grazing something.

My 3 other Ebikes (1 I’ve replaced with the Spectre) I’ve ridden hundreds of times in this same terrain with even lower BB’s (338mm on an 170mm Timp Peak mullet setup) only have scratches and gouges. I haven’t had to replace a single BB cover yet. Their BB’s don’t chip away, they bend and deform instead of cracking and chipping.

This is an awesome bike with some fixes that will take place in gen #2. Like a new car model, they say never buy the first year as fixes will take place. Not saying the bike cover won't get fixed and the annoying rattle won't be fixed, but expect some dust with gen #1.

I can agree to a point, but when :

... I have to dissagree with your assumption
Rob is going crazy with the rattle, the cover for the motors are breaking, internally some are trying to find fixes for cable chatter, others are making exterior cable management changes, and others feel the 600 batter will be better for weight distribution .... This is quite common with first production items in just about everything. Just like with her cars, they say, never buy the first year as the fixes needed to get fixed. That's why I said, awesome bike, fixes needed.

This helped my rattle a little bit. I have the Avinox branded motor, and have tried to combat sounds from the bike since day 1. Sidekick didn't help and I was wondering why until I saw your post. I turned off the freehub preengagement and to my surprise I believe I made a difference. I didn't even know it was on until I had a look through all the settings.
Quick start was already off.
I still have a bit of a rattle, but I guess it's just becasue I am very papered by being used to a TQ motor.

The bike is 3.5kg heavier than my fuel exe (amflow is @22KG) , so I am also trying to come to terms with the weight and I am still on the fence about having such a heavy bike, since it really does negatively affect handling and just general fun a lot more than I thought it would.
Especially with jumps without a great takeoff is so much harder to get real air.
Where can I find the freehub pre-engagement setting in the Avinox app?
