• Warning!!

Riding a tuned or deristricted EMTB is not a trivial offence and can have serious legal consequences. Also, many manufacturers can detect the use of a tuning device or deristricting method and may decline a repair under warranty if it was modified from the intended original specification. Deristricting EMTB's can also add increased loads for motors and batteries. Riding above the local law limit may reclassify the bike as a low-powered bike, requiring insurance, registration and a number plate.

Be aware of your local country laws. Many laws prohibit use of modified EMTB's. It is your responsibility to check local laws. Ignoring it, has potential implications to trail access, and risk of prosecution in the event of an accident.

@vadII does this work to change the speed limit on the EP801, and if so is it reversible/undetectable if the motor needs to go back for warranty?
Yes, it works via Shimano PCE interface ONLY. 45Km/h (Cat3) option is available. It is reversible and undetectable (if you reset settings before visiting a dealer)

That sounds great! I think 20mph would be enough for me, just enough to make the road rides to the trails bearable.

So no traces of any changes left in the log files, should Shimano run some kind of diagnostic report to see if it's been tampered with?

I can’t guarantee anything with 100% certainty. In theory, it might be possible to infer additional details from indirect indicators, but Shimano E-Tube Project Professional (the tool used by dealers) does not provide such functionality. It primarily checks whether the region and wheel circumference match the factory settings, and it also verifies the assist configuration. If you reset everything back to the factory defaults, there should be no issues.
