Specialized Warranty Expired - battery failure, what are my options?

Specialized batteries CAN be repaired. Most M2 batteries with 3rd led blinking when charging have good cells inside and a locked BMS. Assuming the cells are good, I can unlock/repair the BMS so the battery can be used again.

There are parts of the circuit inside that work on very low currents so any moisture inside can prevent the BMS from functioning properly. The firmware will then prevent the battery from being used, setting a PF flag (permanent failure).

I've spent quite a while reverse engineering Specialized battery management systems present on M1 or M2 models.

Also, BMS can be completely separated from the battery in case you want a cell replacement. Then, it can be connected back. I can also reset battery metrics in this case (battery health, cycle count, design capacity).
I have a Specialized BMS that needs to be reactivated and have its battery metrics reset after a cell replacement/rebuild. Is it possible for me to send it to you for this service?

Potresti contattarmi via email? Grazie.

@cream , Hello, I have the same problem as many others. I replaced all the cells in my Specialized m1 battery myself, and now the battery just flashes its LEDs. If you can help me, please send me a private message. Or call me on +49 160 92471972 on WhatsApp or Telegram.I'm ready to send you the whole battery if it helps to revive it.🙂↕️
Yours sincerely

Yes, I can help. Next time you disconnect the BMS make sure it's completely off (the safest way is to put a jumper on the reset tactile switch.

PM sent.

I have a SBC-B11 12.8ah

1 group of cells was out of balance (3,45v vs 4,05v) ive manually charged that cell group to 4.05v.
But there is 1 green led that is flashing (next to the state of charge leds), and the MCU part is warm.

Does it need a reset? (can i do that myself with an arduino orso?)

Most likely the BMS is locked. That bank with 3.45v probably has lower capacity than the rest. Even if you unlock the BMS, it will lock again as soon as that bank will drift from the others. My best bet in your case is to replace the cells. Sbc-b09 had LG MH1 cells (light blue wrapping) which are not so good, they tend to debalance especially after a couple of years of use.

It has light blue INR18650MH1 3200mAh with rectangle warning-box on it. I can replace those, i have one of those spot welders.
How can i unlock the BMS?
Thanks.

Unfortunately there's no simple/standard procedure for unlocking the BMS. I can help you, but you'll have to send the BMS board to me.

Hello Cream I do not know how to send you a DM hear. I have two batteries of my old but in good condition Gen 1 levo.
One of 504wh and an other of 450wh. The two batteries are in error with three red dots.

One the 450 one i can still connect to the batterie with blevo and specialized app. It already did that once and I managed to get it works again by turning quicky the pedales about five turn. but this time this technique seams to not work anymore.

The 504wh one I can not connect to it with the app and at specialized shop the personne mentionned he can not connect to it with the propriertary software too.

Hi @cream. I have a 700wh battery for my 2019 Turbo Levo gen 2. It has 3rd green led flashing. I have opened it and tested all the cells to confirm that they are not the source of the problem. So, I think it is locked up BMS. Please shoot me a message if you are willing to take a look and maybe unlock it.

HI @cream I have a SBC-B09 from a friend that made a short between the two charging pins and now it does not charge with the charger anymore - I have opened it up and charged it with my lab-powersupply successfully though.
The BMS board on the top looks perfectly fine and I am getting an output voltage when I switch it on, so I think most of it is still fully functional and there is probably just some fuse that needs changing.
Now to the question, can I just disconnect the balance wires without risking that the BMS gets locked? So I can take the pcb out and have a look at it from the bottom. Anything else to pay attention to, so it does not get locked?
How do I know if the BMS is already locked? It has this one led that blinks like once every second (see picture)

Hi. Your BMS is not locked (as long as it will turn on voltage on the discharge connector when you power on the battery), but if you remove the balancing connection(s), it will lock. The key to prevent that while you disconnect the BMS is to put the MCU reset line to a low level.

As you suspected, most likely SFC charging fuse is blown, check also the charging Mosfet for short. So either you replace the fuse while the BMS is connected or you put a jumper wire between reset line and GND, followed by a fully disconnect, replace faulty parts, reinstall, remove reset jumper wire.

P.S. I think we've talked in the past about an M1 battery BMS on pedelecforum.

Awesome, thanks for the quick reply! It is indeed the SFC fuse! And the mosfet is still fine.
Since it is accessible like it is, I will probably try to replace it with the battery connected. Just in case I should need to reset the MCU though, the part you indicated has 3 pins, one of which is connected to ground, which of the other two is the reset pin?

Ps: That was someone else, I am not on that forum :-)

Hi. @cream I have this same battery and similar issues. I live in Florida. Is it possible to send you my BMS or battery pack to unlock the BMS or rebuild with new cells?

Hello , Cream i have a issue with my display when i turn of the Batt there be som strange stripe or letter (half) on it ,so i take the batt and see a little green light flashing what can it be for problem ? when i puch the button it starts to fast flashing , power of then ist slow flashing.
Thanks

You should post that knowledge and ask to have it stickied for the DIY crown thats electro mechanically savvy.

This is normal internal led behavior. If the battery powers on the bike and also charges, your problem is somewhere else, not in the battery. If you're having problems with the display, why did you open the battery?

Unfortunately, I don't offer battery repair services outside EU because of the complexity and extra time of handling the package from Eu to US, for example. If you can take care of shipping (Custom fees) roundtrip, I can help you diagnose or unlock the BMS board alone. If you want to replace the cells, I can give you a custom nickel plate kit for this battery and you can rebuild it locally, in US. I guess there are plenty of battery pack assemblers out there.

I won't post explicit information on how to modify BMS parameters. First, I have an ebike workshop that deals with complex battery and motor repairs that most others can't do properly (I speak from experience) or do at all. Sharing that information will conflict with my interests/business. Secondly, that information in the wrong hands, won't do anything good, most people will quickly try to monetize this at the expense of quality of the repair.

P.S.
I would share this in a curated community of repairers where I also get information based on my contributions to that said community.

First it`s a other batt ,504 i get i from sombody how hat a broken frame , we test it in my wife (Como) and my (Vado) and see the same strange line`s letter`s on display , with my old batt (defect) i don`t have / see this problem .
For open it because the switch workt fine . and then we see this blinking led, so i tocht tis is a issue .
But anyway thanks for replay.

HI. I have a couple of LEVO batteries with the BMS locked. Can you give me inscructions for instructions for removing the BMS and how to send it to you? see attached for email address.

Hello,

1 & 2. Yes, I have the firmware files, unencrypyed. Turbo Studio use encrypted firmware files. I’ve managed to reconstruct the firmware from the CAN messages logged during an update. But R5f2134 has a bootloader that won’t change when updating the firmware. So I don’t have a bootloader dump. In other words, you can’t replace this MCU and make it work on a Specialized BMS by writing above mentioned firmware dump.

3. Indeed, eeprom keeps a mirror of some portions of Dataflash inside Renesas MCU. There’s no point modifying eeprom data as it will be overwritten by copy from dataflash as soon as the system boots. Also, there are checksums on data segments.

If you like, you can send only the BMS boards and I can check/repair/unlock as needed.
can you provide instructions for removing the BMS and sending it to you for repair? Can I send from USA?

@cream Seems like you are already sharing a lot of valuable information responsibly and generously here helping people keep their rides going when specialized it seems are more interested in manufactured obsolescence. I have 2 Levo batteries for my 2018 Levo that have both died at the same time whilst in the shop ( this isn't the whole story but they were charging when I dropped it off and now they don't work at all) I'm new here and can't DM you but would really appreciate your opinion on whether you might be able to bring my batteries back to life and how I would get them to you (based in uk). Respect for your work and thanks in advance, Chris
