I had an e-st500 when they first came out .. (what the e-st100 used to be called/was based on)..
There's a crank sensor in the crank for picking up pedal movement, not sure how it is now, but it was that when the left pedal came over the top, it picked up movement there - so for a steep hill start, you wanted to be setting off with the left pedal from the top not the right one if you wanted assistance straight away.
I flipped mine over backwards A LOT at the start because you don't get any torque feed in, it's on or off ..
I think the speed sensor's built into the hub motor ? so you can't trick it physically.
I was messing with the controller at the end and found some combination to get into some configuration options. Can't remember what it was , something like hold both buttons down and power on or something .. There were lots of things in there I intended to play with, but the bike went so never got chance .. let us know how you get on.
I put one of these on in 31.6 : (not available so I guess it's been updated).
