Rail (625Wh) Rail speed limiter acting like jerky on-off switch

So my wife's Rail is now acting badly when you get close to the speed limiter. The speed read-out gets distinctly erratic around 25km/h, and the speed limiter is coming on and off like a switch, rather than the progressive and more natural feeling fade-in and fade-out her bike used to have and my lower-milage Rail does have.

My first thought is that there is an issue with the speed sensor, and it obviously needs to head to the shop, but has anyone else had a similar issue and what was the culprit?

Yes, with my Powerfly. Suddenly began losing power assist abruptly and intermittently when the speed of the bike reached close to the limit. I checked the obvious issues (battery connection, any plugs etc) but eventually I took the bike to the LBS (Trek dealer). They eliminated the speed sensor as the culprit and updated the firmware. Problem solved 👍🏻.

There could be a number of reasons for the sudden change but the LBS helped diagnose the issue.
