Why should they be backed by Shimano? Canyon did the batteries with Trendpower ( former Simplo). Shimano was only opening their system to third parties. So they are not responsible for anything like design or quality issues…

I can't imagine that entire bikes will be 'refunded' or otherwise exchanged. Rather, it'll be new batteries tweaked in a way that still fits within the frame and potentially addresses the issue (because, with a new design how could they have assurance that the same problem won't also occur after time?).
For those saying "get rid of the bike"; If you don't have one the affected models, that's pretty easy to say. At this point without any updates from Canyon, who would touch one of the affected models or who would feel good about dumping the bike onto someone else that doesn't know any better? Personally, I wouldn't. In my situation I'd be happy to be rid of the thing because of other problems I've had, not necessarily because of this recall (that's just something else that hasn't gone well for me). FWIW, I like the way my Spectral:ON rides - it's a fun bike and the value that Canyon offered is hard to beat. If they offered a refund, I'd take it (again, IMO, there is zero chance they will) but the challenge I'd face is that getting a similar spec elsewhere would cost me $1k+ additional here in the U.S. Feels like I'm pretty much stuck.

Hopefully for you being in the UK you'll have success with a claim should you pursue one. In the U.S., lemon laws are generally related to automobiles but can extend, depending upon the state, to select other products (boats and appliances). My state? (from the lemon law article referred to). I have no idea and I am reluctant to spend the money on legal advice to find out. Especially since Canyon claims to be working on a resolution. This is exactly right, the batteries are made 'under licence' from Shimano within the STEPS program. The design and manufacture of these batteries is the collaboration between Trendpower and Canyon. Winford talking shite again.

I decided to ask them to return a bike, to ping them, and watch what they answer. Here is today's answer.
Just a little story of my Canyon Spectral:On. The story, why I would never again deal with them.
I bought Canyon this February (2024). They sent the bike with no charger in the box, other parts were missing, but I didn't ask for them. Email about missing charger had 1 week to reply. Then they sent it - I lost two weeks.
on 5 May, I found that the chainstay was cracked. I emailed it, and again - any email to support has a one-week lag. You always wait 1 week for a response. And the response was it's not a warranty - buy the new one. OK. I lost another 3 weeks of riding.
At the end of July, it was about 800km ridden and the bearing started to crack all over the bike. I disassembled everything and found grease only in two of them. Most of them were full of sand and other trash. I cleaned it and added the grease.
Now this battery story and I haven't ridden for a month again. My battery has two big cracks.
I use this bike for everyday activities like shopping, going to the gym, and so on ( I live in a small village in the mountains ).
So this brand doesn't have a normal warranty, doesn't test its products, and doesn't have normal quality assurance. I never again deal with them and never advise anyone. I don't believe they will fix it ASAP, and we can sell these bikes for the normal price after.
I just realized, that any e-bike with a Bosch motor always has a Bosch battery with it, and only bikes with Shimano often have some custom solutions. Am I right?
It's a huge advantage I guess, that you can travel to some bike park by plane and rent there standard Bosch battery everywhere, but no one will keep the zoo for Shimano models...

Correct....the Bosch Smart system is only supplied to brands as a complete system comprising motor, cabling, controller, battery. There is no mix and match option. There are Bosch variants of battery and controller/remotes and display screens however.
I dont think the previous Bosch system ( ie pre 2022 usually with a Purion controller) is quite so closed however.

This is what I wrote to Canyon few days ago, because it doesn't look good so far, today is 4 weeks since they informed everybody, and there is no news

They have no other choice to solve the problem, there will be a result but they might want to make it right.
Yes it is not a good situation but it is not like it was their intent and if you think about the price of such bike multiplied by the amount, if they have to reimburse, it might be a near death experience if not it.
Eg: let's take some lower numbers:
- 20k bikes at 6k, it is 120 millions.
- 20k batteries - Idk 600 bucks before taxes? Still 12 millions but way more doable.
Let's imagine, it is not 20k bikes sold but like mentioned previously 50-120k (120k bike -> 720 millions) ... we are talking about huge amount of money.
FWIW, revenue of Canyon in 2022: 646 millions.
That is why refund is just not an option unless their insurance is pretty damn good. Just know also that they might are at the moment suing the company that have manufactured the battery? Who knows really. At the very least for some partial responsibility.
To have worked in the past close to such case it can take years to be `solved` between two companies.

Of course refund is an option if only because only a small proportion of affected Canyon owners will take up and follow through on the full refund option. The majority that don't will lose their money.
I wonder about that, knowing that some have been refund will be posted somewhere, then all will follow. Unless they put a clause of NDA on the refund which would be crazy.
Anyway, just saying it cannot be a global refund, I still think Canyon is a great brand and just use a footgun.

Does there seem to be a trend of which serial no. batteries are cracking? Or is it just random? Do the serial no's go in order of build date for example 0001 oldest 0004 newest? Good question. Canyon knows this, the public "us" has not stated any of that yet. What I have seen is this issue...

Yes I was emailing them every few days asking for a refund. A new battery wasn’t an option in my mind no way it could be properly tested in a short space of time.
Seems fair but for people that have done upgrades is it going to be an issue if they do not have the stock parts?
I imagine is you bought a way more expensive fork and sold the stock stock one you would be in a pain. Or just random buy a used similar one?
