Carry spare battery in backpack?

Sadly my emtb doesn't take a rear rack. So I have been considering carrying a spare battery in a backpack. Carrying a 4.5kg battery brick near my spine is a scary thought, even with a back-protector backpack. Any advice?

Very well-made and comfortable to wear. Expensive but very good, and includes a high-spec back protector between you and the battery pocket.
