Crestline RS 181.2 thread – builds, reviews, technical info

Just fyi my zeb came with no volume spacers in it from stock. I just put one in today.

Also, the spring rate chart in this thread was pretty off for me. I’m 155lbs and it had me between a 400-450 for 30% at shock. 400 had me at around 26ish. 375 spring has me at 29% sag at shock.
This chart is from the Specrtre listing, different than other 181 listings but seems the most spot on from what I use and read others ending up with:
140lb rider - 350lb

160lb rider - 400lb

180lb rider - 450lb

200lb rider - 500lb

220lb rider - 550lb

Yeah it’s the chart troydon also sent me to go off. But your posting here is likely more spot on for those interested. Maybe troydon would be interested in seeing those numbers vs what the chart has to change it up.

Avinox alerted me about a firmware update that I installed. I went for a ride the following day and the display kept advising me that the motor power was being restricted. The interesting thing is that it works fine on the street. Once it hits the dirt, that's when it occurs. Anyone else have this issue or know how to resolve it?

Thread about it...

I feel like a noob asking this question. My pants got caught up in the oneup chainguide yesterday causing it to open up and move. I reset it. After the ride I took a look at it in the garage and it felt loose, tried tightening it and the bolt just spins. Is there a trick I'm missing to get it to tighten up or is it supposed to be not tight?

Outward facing hex might be spinning on the T25, which is fine if the two halves hold together. Step 7 onward might explain things.

Beautiful ride. Best of luck with it.

One question... That rear brake hose looks like a tightrope by the caliper. Did you confirm it doesn't need some slack as the rear wheel works through its travel? I know it's a completely different suspension design but my Levo 4 needs some slack at rest or it will be stressed when the suspension compresses.

That's a good point. I had my initial ride yesterday, mainly to dial in the suspension and make adjustments to my saddle and brake levers. I didn't encounter any issues, but didn't hit a lot of features. I will definitely pay attention and see if needs more slack. I have a little extra cable on the brake lever end if I need to adjust and have an extra brake cable just in case. Appreciate the information!

Damn, I probably should have bought a 500 or 525 instead of 550…getting a Slacker (hope it is worth the money).

So, I put a zip tie on the end of the cable and ran my bike through it's complete rear travel and no issues with brake hose being stressed. Looks like it stays in place as rear end goes up and down.

I got the cable routing kit out but still at a total loss as to how to route the power cable through. May try to use heat shrink with some weed trimmer wire and pull it through. Just no matter what I try nothing seems to hold the 2 together strongly enough to pull it through the chainstay. Even my LBS mechanic is stumped to get this thing through. Love everything about this bike but the chainstay routing is just straight up awful.

As a former car audio installer, I have pulled a lot of wire through tight firewall grommets. If you can’t hook the fish line and the cable together; you’ll need to tape them together for a distance (~6”?) after making sure they both are clean. You dont want the tape losing hold. I suggest electrical tape, stretched tightly. I’d also suggest adding a lubricant to the outside so it slips past corners and tight spots. Many use silicone spray, but I always liked using hand moisturizer since cleanup was better. Good luck.

I used a derailleur cable housing, taped with 1 wrap of electrical tape butted to the end of the sram power cable end.

+1 this works for me too. I tried different things and it took my whole night…. The routing def needs an improvement!

May have to try using some sort of lubricant to help it move along, we tried using shipping and electrical tape but would keep pulling apart when trying to pull it through, so maybe not enough tape. Going to try using some twine tomorrow and tying a knot on the power cable so I can pull on it decently hard without it breaking apart. This cable routing is such a nightmare for how short it has to go!

Think I’m gonna throw in the towel and give up on auto shift, going to give it one last attempt and then I’m done. Even with electrical tape and heat shrink tubing, I have to pull on it so hard that it just breaks away before pulling through. Even my LBS mechanic is at a loss for words at how bad the cable routing is, even tried putting slick honey ontop of the electrical tape and heat shrink tubing and it’s still getting horribly jammed up in the last chainstay bend

Maybe you could do a wrap of sandpaper on the cable housing and run it though a few times to smooth out the pathway? I wouldn't go too wide maybe like a 10mm strip.

Volume spacer in the zeb helped. Came with none and I’m only 155lbs, so if you’re heavier than me I’d especially recommend adding 1-2.

Everyone - I'm so excited!!

I got lucky enough to score an RH2 Team Shop Edition 181.2 through Worldwide Cyclery. I couldn't believe they had it in stock and pulled the trigger without even thinking twice.

It Showed up Friday.

Took it out for its inaugural run today on some fun enduro singletrack near me, and… my god. This bike RIPS. It's somehow agile AND plush at the same time, which I'm pretty sure violates some law of physics. I kept giggling on the trail like an idiot.

Here's the problem: it's now sitting in my garage and I can't stop staring at it. I've walked past it maybe fifteen times today for no reason. My spouse thinks I've lost it. I've considered pulling up a chair. This is genuinely my dream bike and I've never been this happy about a purchase in my life.

So, Troydon in case you're reading - THANK YOU — you've built an absolute weapon. I'm a Crestline fan for life :D

Nice score! I like how Crestline reserves some bike for brick and mortar stores. I got my S180 from Worldwide as well. Drove all the way from San Diego to Newbury Park. Scored my RS181.2 from Fanatik.

I've only taken my new bike a few times and echo the comments you shared. Its climbs amazing and doesn't feel like a 180mm bike. Plush off the top, loves the chunky stuff and feels great on flowy singletrack as well.

Troydon is a really cool guy and cares about his customers.

Glad you were able to pull a rabbit out of your hat and land that bad boy! You are in a select club and have one of the best bikes on the planet!

HAPPY TRAILS!!!

Yeah honestly I couldn't believe Worldwide had it in stock — I called them just to double-check, and the second they said yes I hung up and hit checkout lol :D :D

Also is it wrong to sing at the top of your lungs going down trails on this thing? Because that's exactly what I was doing. It is such a FUN MACHINE!!

Got a RH-3 team bike last week and it rides really well. I’ve never had a Zeb before and I guess this new one is a bit different from previous versions. I set it to the recommended settings for my weight (200 lb, 150 psi, neutral Lsc/hsc, -9 rebound, no tokens, mid abo) but seems a bit stiff, I assumed the new linear air spring would be more plush. Haven’t hit the hardest trails yet, but using nowhere near full travel. I’ll play around with air settings, but curious how you all are getting along with this fork and if you have any recommendations, I realize fork setup is a personal preference thing.

I've used previous model Zeb's and new model is a marked improvement. Try running less psi than recommended and open up the ABO a couple clicks. I did this on my new Zeb and it worked better. I would set sag with HSC and LSC fully open, then adjust back to neutral settings making small incremental changes.
