Atherton S170.E Dyf-E bike coming soon...

I toyed with the idea of putting a deposit in, then I actually looked at the geometry of the thing & travel, then backed out.

I don’t need a 180/170mm 24kg ebike with a 1300mm wheelbase (I’m not sure that, in the real world, many people do either!) - that’s even bigger than my current bike.

I can feel the lethargy from here.

Drop an A.150 with some actual proportionate chainstays & that sounds real tempting.

Given the have said it's easy to drop the motor to swap out I'd be surpised if it isn't an "off the shelf" Avinox battery.

The downtube doesn't look any slimmer than my Forbidden really and the tubes being formed that way are probably an aesthetic thing vs a function.

Who knows though, I'd be surpised if a small brand like Atherton are doing a proprietary battery, maybe they new batteries that are coming from Avinox have shrunk a bit.

To my eye the current Avinox batteries are too wide to fit into the round down tube. They are quite flat and rectangular, if they were more square I could see it. But maybe I'm wrong.

I would be on the largest size, and kinda think I would prefer full 29er option
Also what the full spec vs weight vs price shakes out to be...

TBH if it had a gen 2 pinion MGU I would be falling over myself for it.
I know that doesn't exist yet, and think we are a good few years away from that being the best solution.

All in all, I think it looks likely to be a good bet for my intended use.
 
Battery size
1,600-2,000 metres of elevation could be any battery size between 600 to 800.

I ride Bike Park Wales with my son on our eMTB's, Trek Rails. He has a 625Wh battery and I have a 750Wh battery. He weighs 62Kg's and I weigh 82Kg's and we both end up with very similar battery SOC %'s at the end of the ride. Usually about 7-8 full top to bottom runs, which is around 1,800 meters of climbing and 26 miles. [In warm & dry weather]

I'm excited for these Atherton EMTB's.
I' m still enjoying my Trek Rail, but could be looking to upgrade in a couple of years to the 'A Range' EMTB...which I assume they will produce at some point in the future.

I screen grabbed the lightest from from YT video and ran it through nano banana...That down tub can't be that small, right?

I flip flopped back and forth before ordering. I had a decent chat on the system and got the same response as most people (they are under some sort of embargo). Still a bit concerned about support but it seems risk free with the option to cancel, when asked if it would have to go back for repairs he said it's a 2 yr warranty on the motor with full support, so not much to take from that. I did ask if the fact that they can't confirm the motor meant it was something that was under embargo and they replied saying "you could read that into it" . I'm hoping it's the M2 SL or whatever the new one is called with decent sized battery.
 
I know pretty well everyone here is a total enthusiast, but it still surprises me that people are happy (or even frantic) to put cash down on a bike pre-order when they don't even know what size battery or motor model they're going to get. I guess that's true brand loyalty!

Short(er) chainstays seem to be a defining factor in the way DW Link has to be implemented on a frame.

Even on brands with changes across sizes, they are still shorter than most.

In fairness, it's a £1k refundable deposit, not paying the full thing like Crestline, who also left some details a little vague.

Yeah, I fully accept I’m on the long chain stay train, I’ve ridden enough bikes to know that 440 isn’t going to work for me.

Interestingly I’ve seen the likes of Jank making long pivot kits for the newest Ibis bikes so a DW Link must work with them.

To be fair, with that enhanced image I definitely couldn’t forgive the shock orientation from a looks perspective anyway 😆

True, but the full balance has to be paid at the end of February before production has started, so you will then be committed to the bike before it's left the production line! After that it's down to Ts & Cs.

Feels almost like a Kickstarter (a platform on which I have been burnt), so that'd be a definite red flag to me - funding the manufacturing with pre-order money...
 
Agreed, not the nicest feeling. Then again, this was not raised for Crestline or Velduro.
 
Avinox apparently has updated batteries on the way, something like 700ish & 900ish, at approximately the same weight as the old 600/800, using new architecture. They were supposed to be released 3rd quarter.
Maybe Atherton got early access?

That's very true, and I certainly didn't want my comment to spark any antagonism towards Atherton Bikes. I am equally surprised at how people have rushed to throw their money at a Velduro on the basis of just a few - admittedly quite tasty - photos and a couple of review vids. Seduced by the trend for high pivots perhaps?

The same goes for the initial Crestline launch, although RobRides did test the bike and host Troyden on his podcast which added some real credibility. Now Crestline has demonstrated the quality of their product in both design and fabrication, and also top class post sale support.

So a new player has to start somewhere, and Atherton already have an established reputation. My observation was merely surprise at how readily people part with rather a lot of money on a product that is as yet undefined.

The Velduro is made in the Giant factory. Not much to worry about imo.

They only do 50, so… tbh I’m not surprised at all.
 
All is not the same. Crestline has done 8 iterations over 6 years of emtb with proven quality prior to the current model. Atherton has been around what, 3-4 years pushing the limit on new technologies that have been dependable. This is their first emtb but like Crestline, they have not departed from proven designs. On the other hand you have Velduro, this is their first ever bike and it shows.
 
Anyone that’s been in touch with Atherton have the shock size?
Couldn’t see it in the details.
