Before I get jumped on, I did read all 23 pages of this thread, but I still cannot figure out what I need to buy for my particular Rail. I've been trying to nail down exactly what parts I need to buy to replace my rear shock on my medium frame Rail 9.8 GX AXS Gen 3. It is the Trek thru shaft trunnion shock. I haven't even decided on which shock to put back there, but I'm fairly certain it's going to have standard eyelet mounts top and bottom. I don't know what trunnion to pin hardware to by for my frame for my 2022 carbon framed Rail 9.8. I've read conflicting info on several different websites including this one. Can someone break it down for me? Top hardware as well as bottom? I have another e-bike with a rear coil shock an it's night and day more plush than the stock Trek/Rockshox Tru Shaft. Thanks in advance for the help...

Standard shock is

"RockShox Super Deluxe Ultimate RT3, DebonAir spring, Thru Shaft 3-position damper, 230 mm x 57.5 mm"

So it's 230 mm eyelet to eyelet.

Have Ohlins TTX22m.2 230x65 coil shocks with 3x2.5mm spacers=57.5mm on my wife's 2022 (M) and my 2022 (L) Rails, can't fault them.

Thanks Irie. What I'm asking is what parts do I need to buy to put a 230x57.5mm shock that has standard eyelets on both ends on my bike that is currently equipped with the trunnion thru shaft shock. I've see Trek part numbers: 5258210, 5258209 listed as a Trek part that would mount the upper eyelet to the top mounting points. Which one of these two part numbers is correct for my year/gen bike? Do I need two? Upper and lower? Same part number for upper and lower?

I gather I will also need the shock specific mounting hardware (Fox or Rockshox). I just don't know what to purchase to get any shock mounted to my bike. I also see a kit from Dirt Labs?? Here's that description:

Trunnion Mount Shock Adapter – A Simple Solution for Owners of Tunnion Mount Bikes

Own a Trunnion mount shock, like a Deluxe ThruShaft, and want to fit a different shock? This adapter makes it easy to swap out your shock without the need for a costly new bolt kit or additional mounting hardware.

Designed for a Seamless Fit

These adapters fit into a 15.08mm (19/32") eyelet, found on most modern shocks, with M10 threads on both ends to accommodate your existing Trunnion bolts. This allows for a straightforward installation while maintaining compatibility with Trek’s mounting system.

Kit Includes:

  • 1x Stainless steel shaft – Durable and corrosion-resistant
  • 2x Carbon fiber-filled nylon spacers – Lightweight and strong
  • 2x Seals – Helps keep dirt and debris out
  • 1x IGUS eyelet bushing – Provides smooth, friction-free movement
  • 6mm hex feature on shaft – Allows easy removal by holding the shaft in place while unbolting

It's not trunnion, it's standard eyelet to eyelet. I removed and reused the mounting parts (upper and lower are different lengths) from our stock eyelet to eyelet shocks. But IIRC had to fit IGUS bushings in the top Ohlins eyelets so that could reuse the stock mounting parts.

TF Tuned (uk) have kits so perhaps you could look at their kits and see what to buy.

The best thing you can do is search the Trek archive for the service manual for your bike. I couldn't find the Gen 3 manual but the Gen 4 is the same. It shows the different hardware for the trunion and standard shock.

I would suggest the spacer kit from tf tuned. M10x54 and M10x40. They have a Tech help section that details it out. Then they sell the spacers and Trek shock mount bolts. IIRC it was cheaper there for the Trek bolts than my local dealer. If you contact them they will set you straight just in case.

I believe I used Trek SUS4914581K and SUS49245478K instead of the tf tuned spacer kit. Too many bike builds, shock swaps, and head injuries to remember and I got tired of looking.

What piggyback air shocks fits to alu Gen2 Rail 7 2022 size S?
With standard stroke 230x57.5. Or 230x60 if that makes it simpler and will fit.

It may be on these 23 pages, but with some reading I did not find certain answer. So much talks about coils, custom strokes, different generations and frame sizes etc.

Or are we stuck here on inline air shock?

where did you A score the coilover itself B where did you find the correct spacers? Thanks

Don't understand "where did you A score the coilover itself", sorry.

Shock came with 3 x 2.5mm spacers in the box which you can fit yourself, really easy. So the shocks are 230 x 65mm with 3 x 2.5mm spacers fitted = 57.5mm

FYI have an Ohlins spring on wife's shock and Cane Creek Valt spring (non-progressive) on my shock, fits fine.

LOl where did you get the coilover from Ie: score

Hey all, I've got a gen 2 rail (large) and I use a DVO jade x prime, and a shockcraft lift kit, from shockcraft here in NZ (be sure to get the DU monochrome bushing and the bolts with it)
So because I was paranoid, I chose to get the DVO in a trunion mount (keeps everything up top)and 65mm stroke, and it fits so easy, miles of room(would easy fit on a medium) and with that 170mm rear travel, it absolutely buttery smooth now.

thats the bits I used, plus the shock of course.
Mounted Ohlins TTXm.2 230 x 57.5* (65mm with 3 x 2.5mm spacers which are included) eye-to-eye coil shocks on wife's 2022 (Gen2) Medium Rail 5 and my 2022 (Gen2) Large Rail 5 using mounting hardware removed from the stock shocks. Was very straight forward.

* tried 65mm stroke (169mm travel ?) on my Large (had plenty of seat tube clearance) but preferred to stay with 57.5mm stroke.

I borrowed an Ohlins TX22m coil damper in 230 x 65mm (from my mrs's) and ftted it on my alloy Rail5 - medium frame.
used the origonal Trek mount hardware & turned the damper shaft 90* to position the rebound adjuster (y)

as to overstroke, had no problems riding my local park tech & flow trails so red runs with drops & chunk

Rich.
How are you finding the TTX22m.2 compared to the TTX2Air? I think I saw that you tried a couple of different shocks in the past? I keep flip flopping but think I've settled on the coil. I also thought I'd try to over stroke it, given that it only involves removing a few spacers. Did you notice much difference with changing the stroke? My thinking is it may help with balancing out against my 170mm Fox 38 up front?

I've read through almost all of this thread as I was looking for an answer to this question...

Would a Fox Float-x of a Trek Remedy 8, with 150mm travel, 230 x 57.5 fit a Trek rail 5? It has the same travel and 230 x 57.5 is the same as the Trek rail 5.
Also is it a decent improvement on the standard shock?

Cheers in advance

Does the piggyback touch or hit the button of the water bottle? Maybe there’s enough clearance with a large Trek Rail.
Ohlins TTX22m.2 coil 57.5/150 eye-to-eye shock just touched the bottom of the water bottles on both wife's 2022 Trek Rail 5 (M) and my 2022 Trek Rail 5 (L). So I modified the cages to move the water bottles up a few mms, problem solved. Can now only fit 650ml water bottles but no big deal.

I think I need to re-think my water bottle size. Besides, they probably have a shelf-life and I’m probably overdue.

Anyways, this could open up a whole world of shock upgrades for me. GREAT!🙄 💰

I've got a Camelback podium 600ml, and yes the vivid's piggyback hit the bottle, and there's no room to shift the bottle up. :(
So I need to find a way to fit a bottle in there with the Vivid...

You might find, as we have, that a side loading bottle cage* can be mounted a little higher giving you the extra clearance that you need.

* Such as Trek Side Load cages which we have (with mounting holes relocated ).

Edit: also mounted the cage a little closer to the downtube (if the bottle in cage will fit above the downtube then modify the cage so that it fits).

I ditched the bottle and run a hydration bladder. I use the cage bosses to mount spares. I run an accessory mount with a tube strap. My OneUp EDC pump is mounted beside the strap, my spare tube and tire levers are strapped to the mount. I wear a Camelbak Chase vest with my water, food, and a wind jacket. There isn't much room for a bottle with a piggyback shock, so I was running out of water long before I was running out of battery. This way I have enough water for long rides and I'm not carrying anything in my pockets.

I got the bad habit of packing a water bottle, mounted on the down tube. Side mount cage on a medium size Railing.

I did really care for a water bladder. Never have. But I’ve only drank from a stream or creek a few times …which is why I think I have beaver-fever.
