Important safety note from Canyon: the Spectral:ON CF / CFR and Torque:ON CF models may have damage to the battery

After the 1 to 3 days shipping notice, I got the shipping tracking number 1 week later. I'll wait to I actually get the battery before breathing easy. What a fiasco!

All my friends who have a Canyon Spectral:ON have received their new batteries.

There might be a bit longer wait time for certain countries. It could be related to the fact that different countries have different regulations for how batteries can be shipped and received.

Won't be buying another Canyon.
When you stop to think about it there is not a lot brands can get wrong when designing a bike. Geo is pretty settled for each mtb segment from trail through enduro to downhill, and most components are 3rd party and changeable. That pretty much leaves the motor, battery and controller. The battery is the most problematic because of its size and weight. Where and how it is positioned has a big impact on bike handling.......so brands try to innovate. But if the battery fails to provide a reliable connection to the CAN, allows water ingress, or breaks/ gets damaged, the entire bike is compromised. The solution is a non removeable battery or removeable from the bottom of the downtube, preferably secured on a rail system. Vary from that and problems are likely. Just one reason , for example, that I would not buy a gen 4 Levo. Even the gen 3 has some drawbacks but mostly to do with the use of a Rosenburger battery to motor connection which doubles as a charging point, rather than how the battery is fixed. My advise looking for another bike is to focus on its engineering design rather than price or aesthetics, or marketing hype.

Has anyone noticed a drop in power with the new batteries? Either my motor is taking a dump as i lost 20% of my power with old battery. The new battery came in and that increased my loss by 10%. So bike is still 10% slower then it was 3 weeks ago.

Can't say I have noticed, but saying that, i had the bike for such a short time prior to the battery debacle, I have nothing to compare against. Mine appears to be functioning okay.

No such notice in german forum. Looks like no difference between old and new battery.

Just a thought, you can set the max speed in shimano e-tube app. Go to drive train, you should be able to see top speed and adjust.

Lol, it will be year after recall...and through this year they didnt give any correct date. All deadlines were incorrect. What a company.

Surely it's better for them just to ship 900wh batteries to everyone rather than make the 720wh customers wait until November?

Haven't followed the thread, but can you yolo it and still ride your bike while waiting for a replacement? (Non canyon owner but curious)

Yes you can , i have a friend that have the new battery from canyon but he is still using his old battery .

He is gonna change so dont worry

After months of waiting, 255 days to be exact, my battery arrived today! I got the email from Canyon on July 10 saying "Your order is on its way". I felt like I was beholden to Canyon (and FedEx) right up until delivery since you have to be home to sign for it. FedEx promised it yesterday and I spent the day waiting on them only to receive an email late yesterday saying it would be today instead. I also got another email from Canyon on July 25 saying, "We hereby confirm your credit memo" and "the refund may take 7-10 business days". What a saga this has been.

FYI all don't try and carry your new battery with the carry handle... All I did was walk from the box to the garden but before I got to the door the handle broke and the battery was bouncing on the floor. Luckily the battery survived and I didn't scrap the old one so I could swap the handles. The new handle brackets are super thin compared to the old one. I cannot wait to sell this bike

That's mental.........

Has anyone in the US found the best way to make contact with Canyon? I can't get anyone to answer the phone and they are taking 2-3 business days per email response and each email response does not seem to use information from the previous email.

My story: Purchased Spectral On at the end of September 2024. Stop use goes in early November 2024. I receive new battery June 18 2025. I continued riding the old battery while waiting but the bike would randomly shut off during rides. Seemed to get worse as the battery percentage got lower. July 25 2025 the bike shut off on me 7 times in a two hour ride. I figured it was time to swap batteries. After charging the new battery and installing it the bike wouldn't turn on. I then installed the old battery and still the bike would not turn on. Took it in to a Shimano service center and Shimano warrantied the battery connection cable. Still no luck. Shimano then said the problem has to be the canyon battery and they won't do anything more. The shop reached out to canyon and after a few back and forth emails stated that the battery I received is part of the recall. That was over a week ago now and it seems that since they've identified it is a bad battery won't touch my case. I don't see how it would be the battery as both the new and old battery have the same issue of the display/motor not turning on.

I am curious if it is best to keep calling them or if I should be emailing them every few hours to get a response?

Very common with the ep801 welcome to my world. Motor was replaced and 3 Rosenberger cables and finally battery. Cables helped for a week or two, Motor helped for two weeks. Not washing bike got me 2 months. They hate water.

After charging the new battery and installing it the bike wouldn't turn on.
There is an internal battery in the battery and if you dont ride or charge it in a month it goes dead. If it goes dead ive heard turning bike upside down and turning rear wheel backwards for a bit puts a charge back in where bike will boot up. Search for it, that info is on here. But pretty sure that is the backdoor procedure. My local shop told me about the internal battery going out. Very common

7 times in a two hour ride
If you pull the cable off the the motor after taking side cover off, I cleaned mine with rubbing alcohol, and it reduces the amount of times it shuts off, back to one or two times. once it gets over 4 it rapidly gets worse. Then it overheats the battery and you have to wait for it to cool down before it powers back up.

Look at your battery, if one led is solid and the other blinking its the overheat/use warning

the same issue of the display/motor not turning on.
Not turning on is a different issue, from shutting off midride obviously.

Check and see if all leds light up when turning the battery on, outside of the bike. press the battery power butting and see what the leds do.

I cant see internal battery going low on your old battery

Both. Email from the same chain, so all correspondence stays with the email chain. Forward it to them. NOW it does take time, they are swamped with complaints because of what Shimano did to them. [produced a less than reliable motor battery combo] You may have a Canyon battery, I have a Shimano battery in my spectral.

As far as calls, you can try. Stay on hold, it takes a while even when the shops try and get them on the line.

All very good info. If I take the side cover off and turn on the battery the five lights all turn on solid for roughly 5 seconds and then shut off. I'm curious if there is an issue with something inside the battery that connects to the Rosenburg connection. I removed the plastic piece from the Rosenburg cable connection so I could see the connection and with the cable connected to the battery, the lights on the battery still turn on as if the cable is not connected.

The shop that I had the bike at was able to connect to the bike with their shimano diagnostic tools and they could see every part of the bike except for the battery. I'm fairly certain the Rosenburg cable itself is good as Shimano warrantied the cable, so it is brand new.

I tried the spinning backwards of the rear wheel but didn't try it upside down, will give that a shot. I do have a Canyon (trendpower) battery, not a shimano.

As others have mentioned it is very frustrating for us to just be wanting a rideable bike when we are watching other manufacturers enter the market and Bosch leveling up while we are waiting. The shop that was assisting with my issue had some Transition Regulators with the new Bosch motors and they look very tempting.

I am not familiar with your bike but reading your description of the fault...and especially the fact that your LBS could not access the battery using their Shimano diagnostics tool, the usual wiring set up on EMTBs is controller and a number of components that the controller communicates with on the CAN. The usual wiring set up is a cable from the controller to the motor ( that connects to the PCB in the motor).........then a cable from the motor to the battery. The diagnostic test proved the Controller was working...other wise they would get no accss at all.......the cable from the motor to the battery is brand new so should be OK..........that leaves the cable from the controller to the motor. Unless there is any reason to suspect actual damage to that cable.....unlikely since it is run within the frame.........the 2 biggest fault suspects would be the connections on that cable at either end. The a bove assumes the controller involved is also the way in which the bikes system is switched on and off. If however there is a separate on off switch the routing above would be interupted by that switch, meaning the cable run would be controller to switch/switch to motor/motor to battery. In that case added potential fault areas would be the on off switch itself and the connections into and out of that switch.

If the bike was mine....and it did indeed have a separate on/off switch, that would be my prime suspect and I would change it.

I wish it were simply that. However these bikes do not have a separate switch. The cable run is battery to controller / controller to motor. The shop was able to plug into the controller as you mentioned and could read everything except for the run to the battery. So it would either be an issue within the controller itself to not recognize two different batteries, or somehow the batteries have the same exact issue that they have disconnected internally to the connection port on the outside of the battery.

In which case I would suspect the cable run from controller to motor.
