I’m sure most of you know by now that the Bosch Performance CX (gen5/BDU38) will become more powerful. This was announced a couple of months ago, but there is more to the story. All Bosch Performance motors starting with the Smart System (gen4/BDU37) will be improved with the upcoming software update. Read more here ...

That's a bummer, hoped the SX would get the EMTB+ since it's fairly new.
Yeah, I was expecting it too. But I was told the SX wasn't powerful enough to have the EMTB+ bring a meaningful advantage over the old EMTB mode. I guess the weaker SX already ramps up power in the same more careful way the EMTB+ mode does?

In your review you said "Performance remains unaltered at 600 W peak power and 85 Nm of torque."

So not "more powerful".

Edit: my mistake, confused Gen 4 with Gen 5.

The gen 5 does get more power., Think you have confused it with the Gen 4 keeping the same numbers?

Having ridden a Bosch Gen 4 for the first time last week and comparing it back to back with my Shimano and the 400% assistance (Shimano) vs the 340% (Bosch) was VERY noticeable and made steep climbs far harder.

I think this update will make the Gen 4 a much better motor for riders like me.

Now there are articles out saying the SX will get the EMTB+mode. I guess it's likely, despite what I was told.

My reading of what the July update will include for BDU37 (Performance Line Cx Smart System Gen4), on the Bosch Ebike Systems website is that it will include emtb+ which in turn can be tuned in the flow app to deliver 400% support rather than the default 340%. Torque and peak watts remain the same at 85 and 600 so I assume it means the rider input torque and cadence required to achieve peak watts are both lower. The dynamic control aspect of emtb+ will not be available on bdu37 however. I assume that is because BDU37 lacks the extra sensors of the BDU38/Gen 5.
Happy to be corrected....as I said the above is just my interpretation of Bosch's somewhat cryptic news article.

Apologies in advance for asking an off-topic (Bosch) question but has anyone geard anything regarding Shimano still participating in the e-bike motor arena? With Bosch gen 5 and Dji dominating the bike motor news the only thing we hear from Shimano is about their (late to the party) wireless drivetrains. Competition is good for the consumer and vital for the industries’ manufacturers to retain their relevance.

To me this makes zero difference. 85nm is plenty for me, I would like the ability to go to 28mph (class 3) to get to my destination trail. If they are going to improve something, make the motor and app more user adjustable and work on a lighter, higher capacity battery. IMO, anything over 95 or 100 Nm torque and you should be looking at an eMoto (Suron or similar).

The ability to go to 28mph (class 3) is available in the Gen 4 Specialized and Shimano EP801 motors....

How can rider assistance go up like that without increasing TQ or watts? I thought I fully understood emtb motors but I guess not. Haha

Torque went up to 60 and watts to 400.
“The update will increase the support, what I usually call “amplification”. Currently it will amplify the rider input by up to 340%. After the update, it will amplify by up to 400%

Performance remains unaltered at 600 W peak power and 85 Nm of torque.”

Will the announced 100Nm update for the CX Gen5 also be released on July 14 for Apple, and one week later for Android?

Still no clear roadmap from Bosch. We've had to wait more than two months. Mid-summer instead of early summer... the season has already started. Crazy.

I am pretty sure the release date for the 100nm update was always stated as July from the first press announcements back at the start of May so I am not sure they have broken any promises.

It’s scheduled for July. But come on—July means a whole month. It’s crazy that they say “it will be released in July” without giving a clear date. I seem to remember July 7th from the first press release. Then it became “mid-July.” Then another update was announced: the SX. Knut7 says the 14th for Apple, and the following week for Android. What are his sources? Has anyone been able to find a clear statement from Bosch?

I also ride year-round, but a lot of people are only active—or mostly active—during the summer. Don’t think only about yourself ;)

It’ll be released when it’s released, why is everybody in such a damn hurry all the time and get so entitled when a date (whether it’s software or new bike releases) gets missed?

It’s not that important in the grand scheme of things, ‘July’ is what a Bosch email I got back in June said, ref the SX which is the only Bosch motor I have.

Chill and go ride, it’s not like the bikes don’t already work without it! 👍

Just to add this from the loam wolf review on the CX Gen 5

A beta version of the firmware which offered the boost of power and new EMTB+ mode was made available to us midway through the test. While the increased 100Nm and 750W numbers were exciting on paper and appreciated on simple drag race style climbs, we had some struggles with the new EMTB+ mode’s “runaway train” sensation. The beta version didn’t feature a tuneable dynamic assistance, and the setting which was provided to us was quite snappy. As a result, we struggled to safely control the extra power. We are certain that there will be improvements and that the final firmware will allow for more control to be tuned into this upgraded eBike system. That said, we’d recommend exercising caution initially if you opt to increase the drive unit output, as it could get you into some hairy situations.

Bbbbbbut they proooomised!
We need to get a mediator and a barrister and make them give us refunds and CX5 motors!
