Pic of the Day

On this, the saddest day of the year (I have to go back to work tomorrow - high school teacher), at least I can say it was a nice summer with many good days on the mountain. Today we took a run down a couple of Double Black trails in the Garibaldi Highlands near Loch Alice and Loch Edith. They are we both steep and loose but we made it down with smiles on our faces :D

The trails are called Value Added and Penthouse Slabs. VA starts off with a 15 minute climb with tight switch back corners filled with roots and rocks and even with an emtb's help had us both pushing. The view from Penthouse Slabs was well worth it!

The main features on the trails are several large and steep rock slabs. No matter what the pictures look like, they are steep!

This is the B line on lower Penthouse Slabs. I have not done the A line which starts a little further back. VERY good riders can drop off the 8' rock behind @Crash Logan into the A line. They are also 30+ years younger and WAY better riders than us!

Awesome! What I wouldn't give to have slabs like that to ride. I remember some of those in Moab in the 90s. We have some rock slabs in the lava field but nothing as steep as yours. What a rush that would be! That 8' drop to flat rock slab would sure be hard on an E bike suspension!

I have been to your beautiful island several times and I am surprised there are not some smoking trails coming down off of Mauna Kea! Moab is also pretty cool but no emtbs allowed there. If you want to see the A line with the rock drop on the trail we were on (these guys are pretty smooth), check out around the 5 minute mark where they figure it out.

Hey thanks for that second video of that particular trail. Wow, still very gnarly but at least not a drop to flat as the side view shows in the video. 13 feet is a bit much for me these days. I'm with you brother. Still get plenty of fun on shorter drops.
It's all private or state owned land around Mauna Kea mountain with many ranches so unfortunately no trails.

Very cool variety of critters!

I had to laugh at your coatimundi. We don't have such critters here, so I was unfamiliar with them.

Back in the early 90's I was camped up in the Huachuca Mountains. I had to see a guy down in the flatlands, so I hopped in my dune buggy for the meet. On the way back up into the mountains, my engine blew up. Shit. My truck was ten miles away, and I couldn't wait around ten years for cell phones to be invented. So I grabbed my pack and started hoofin' it up the dirt road.

About an hour in, I spotted something in the road up ahead. It was... a monkey! No! It was a raccoon! WTF was I looking at? As I was grabbing my camera out of the pack to document the sighting, the monkoon walked off the road and into the forest. I knew I wasn't trippin', but it sure was strange. And there was no proof.

After a couple more miles of walking, some good ol' boys in a rusted out pickup came rambling up the road. I stuck out my thumb and they gave me a lift. I couldn't wait to share my tale of the mysterious monkoon. They laughed and told me it was a coatimundi, which were common in those mountains. I've probably seen one or two more since then... I don't spend a lot of time in the Arizona mountains. But the coati was part of a larger adventure that I'll not forget.
 
Second ride at Kirroughtree, this time with more time to explore...

I did the complete red and black routes, heading up to all the rock ridges. I will say this, difficult yes but compounded today by overnight thunderstorms and rain which made the rocks as slippery as fook! Greasy and slimy. No major mishaps, just a couple of little 'offs' when the wheels slid out on the slimy rocks or tyres lost grip.

Also doesn't help when riding it for first time, solo. Not knowing the lines or what was coming next. Not busy there today, didn't meet anyone else and car park hardly had more than 4 vehicles when I set off so, for safety, I told the guy in the bike shop where I was going and reported back once I returned.

17.4 miles, 1400kCals, only about 1800ft of climbing...
 
Tested out my new MIPS helmet yesterday. While riding on a usually perfectly flat beach cruising with a tailwind in the high teens I came upon a 1' drop off that if I was prepared for it wouldn't have been an issue but I hit the deck like an old lady on a cruise ship, to quote Rob Warner, and while nothing broke there is soreness of the body that will take a few days to resolve I'm sure.

No but when I got home and gingerly flopped on my bunk upon getting up, once again gingerly, I had to take the coverlet outside to shake off all the sand.

And if a tree falls in the forest and no one hears.......There were three gals on horses well behind me that might have seen the aftermath on the sand but I was riding the incoming tide line and chances are it was washed over before they got there. May be why the few people I saw looked at me strangely though while working my way off the beach through the car park.
 
Out last night with the crew but the lad whose bike always gets mechanicals had a mechanical, so we ended up in the pub after six miles, so I went out for a solo schlep today to make up the difference. I can feel the seasons turning in the trails.
