I think Boots is an honest guy just trying to make little interesting videos for you tube.

As he says, he doesn’t have a lot of mechanical knowledge - like most of the population and the number of people like this will increase because e-bikes are being bought by “normal” people because they are so much fun.

I’ve cancelled an order for an AllMtn 7 because of the various problems and I’m not over confident that it’s replacement will be trouble free!

The elephant in the room is the fact that e mtbikes are not really fit for purpose and the manufacturer’s need to get their act together.

How come you can buy a motorcycle or small car for the same money as an emtb and they just run and do the job without buggering about with them all the time.

At the moment, this forum sounds a bit like a forum for Landrovers - a minority who love fixing and tinkering but a majority just want to drive/ride!

A friend who goes for long ride outs on his motorbike has been joined by his wife during lockdown, she's lovely but very chatty. Apparently his Bluetooth headset 'develops a fault' after a mile or so.

I’ve removed the pillion pegs from my bikes, and told the insurance company I don’t take pillions. ?

That's right for all manufacturers.
Every make has its problems and issues.
There is no exception.

With the above said, what would you buy then? And what do you expect from another brand? No problems? ?

Agree. All eBikes are way overpriced.
But if you want one now, you have to pay the price.
But the main problem is the reliability and the service offered by the LBS.
Most of them aren't very good in afterbuy services. And in these strange times they get away with it.
I tried to order a 29er Michelin eWild in a local bike shop.
First shop refused to help me because the boss said Michelins are no good and he won't sell them to me. Instead I should buy Schwalbe.
Second shop wasn't aware that Michelin eWilds even exist.
Third bike shop made clear (in an unfriendly manner) that he only orders the tyre if I exactly know the parts-number because he doesn't want to search for it.
After we had a look in his computer together, he ordered the eWild which then came two weeks later because he didn't order the same day when I was there. Instead he waited another five days to collect some more orders to save money on shipping. Still he wanted to charge me all the shipping costs.
Now what's the point of this text?
If you're not able to do most of your repairs on your own, you're screwed.
Order as much spare parts as you can before you have an issue.
Try to understand the function of the bike-parts and their impact on the bike.
And finally your wallet should contain some bigger bills ?

I have a Cube coming and as I said, I‘m not very confident that it will be trouble free.

My point was that the purchaser should not have to be constantly maintaining the bike but that is the current situation.

You shouldn’t really have to be ordering spares for a new bike although I have already ordered rear hub bearings.

I‘m not fazed by working on anything mechanical but sometimes you need specialist tools which is another cost!

I agree with your post but it’s a sad state of affairs!

Some shops will go above and beyond to look after the customer, others don’t see the bigger picture. I called my local LBS to get my Whyte first service, explained that I wanted to get the bike from them when I bought it, as they are only two miles away, but they didn’t have stock, but would like to use them to do all my servicing/ warranty work (if there is any). Not only did they quote over £150, but they said they couldn’t do it for 6-8 weeks.

I then phoned the dealer I got it from on Tuesday, and they are servicing it tomorrow FOC. Guess where I’ll be going in future?!

I think you need to segregate the e-components from the general mtb parts. An acoustic mtb still takes a lot of maintenance.
At the end of the day we’re talking about metal machined parts running in a mud and sand grinding paste. It’s never going to work unless you strip it and clean it often and even then it has a finite life span.
I agree, for the average punter with little mechanical knowledge eebs are a time bomb. That said, with YouTube there is nothing you can’t teach yourself so in my opinion there is no excuse. Some people are just problem magnets. Harsh? I hope not.

The whole thing is a perfect storm.
Lack of supply, reasons above, new tech, bad owners. What could possibly go wrong.

Not sure about the “bad owners” bit!

Maybe poor design of the new tech - probably need more e bike specific drive chains - beef them up a bit!

There is a lot of rider beta testing going on....

Same applies for MotoCross bikes.
For almost the same price you get a bike that lasts decades.
You can clean it with a jet-washer... no probs.
Diving through a river? Yes, of course!

Compared to MotoCross bikes the eBikes are well behind.
With eBikes you have to take so much care and the lifespan of the engine is ridiculously low.

Given the fact that almost all bicycle companies that produce eBikes have enough money to invest in development, this current state is embarrassing.
Same goes for the manufacurers of the engines.
They still are not able to provide waterproof motors... what a mess.

Morning all. I want to thank you all for taking the time to answer and give feed back here on the forum, I'm Taurus so I fly off the handle quick, I am putting so much effort into my channel its a passion project and its grinded to a halt, literally. When you love something so much you become defensive and for that I apologise to you all.

I really wanted it too be a success. I am the first to admit my lack of mechanical knowledge, iv been riding for over 12 years owned, muddy Fox, x2 treks, Claude butler, orange crush, marin mount vision, and my Haibike, I love to ride.

When things have gone wrong in the past iv had somebody who loved to tinker and fix things and genuinely enjoyed doing it, they are not with us anymore so it's either I try and do it or get in bike shop.

My brakes video which I thought was grit on rotar was a big mistake yes BUT I showed that mistake and what I had done and what the issue, not an easy decision to show that video but it showed what other riders with little mechanical experience may do as well some channels only show riding or the good stuff I want to be honest and show it all.

I will not accept from anyone I'm not passionate about riding or my channel. Period. Its all I have that brings me any joy.

Nor do I accept that that I can't say I'm disappointed having ridden less than 40x I expected parts to last longer, there is no right or wrong answer.

So I thank you again for your feedback iv taken it on board and made me realise I could ask you lot before jumping the gun, we learn we grow we appreciate., we... Hopefully ride.

Much love. Andy.

PS. The guy who requested to send me a private message on Facebook you know who you are. Come meet me say it too my face it was totally uncalled for. .. I will wait.

Perhaps there is something unique about the psychology of mountain bikers / ebikers that we like to push things to the limits and to constantly escape our comfort zones. Maybe we just have a different mindset to say stamp collectors ?

I thought your brake video was excellent. It will sure help a lot of people avoid a costly repair.

I’ve basically learned everything I know about bikes from this forum. Keep up the good work Andy!

Was it you I warned about riding through deep water ?
Those electric motors are not biscuits .
Sam Pilgrim has some things to answer to . I saw him dunk his Haibike past the cranks and say its no problem .
Do you know which video it was of Sam dunking his bike under water?

I suggest you turn the bike upside down in the garden.

Then take the rear wheel out.

1. Does the rear wheel make the noise if you spin the cassette around ?

2. Does the rear wheel make the noise if you spin the wheel whilst holding each end of the hub ?

3. Does the motor make the noise if you spin the cranks without the rear wheel in the frame ? Hold the chain in the other hand to enable you to spin the cranks.

If it is the rear wheel, a good local bike shop will repair it in no time.

Alternatively you might be better off buying something like a DT Swiss H1900 rear wheel which is an ebike specific rear wheel. I am not sure if the syntace hub is ebike specific; if not you might have the same problem again in the future. The extra torque from electric motors means the rear wheel should be ebike specific. If you go this route I suggest you ask the forum for suggestions on the best ebike specific rear wheel for your budget.

I think we're talking about not pulling the brake lever and popping the pistons out!
If you have your bike upside down and pull the lever, chances are that air might be sucked in.
This happens through the reservoir.
This small reservoir is needed to advance the pistons automatically when pads wear.
So if you flip the bike make sure not to pull the levers.
