It can be fixed or at least mitigated by adjusting the battery nest which dealers are now being told to do when people bring their Levos into the shop. Replacement battery nests will be provided soon it seems, not sure if these have slightly revised design.

The lack of recall notice makes me think this is not a very widespread issue or else one very easily solved with the adjustment in the bike shop. I think the calls of the bike not being fit for use are a bit dramatic and premature.

Hi everyone, it looks like I’ve had some pretty bad luck with my Levo 4, which I picked up from the dealer just last week. The motor is making noticeable knocking/clicking sounds when, for example, I push the bike slowly backwards. See the YouTube video for reference:


The bike only has around 45 km (25 miles) on it. The clicking noise was already present at delivery, but it wasn’t as noticeable and didn’t happen constantly. Unfortunately, I didn’t pay much attention to it at the handover. Now, after the first proper ride, it has become quite obvious. (Please note that the audio in the video is a bit quiet due to smartphone recording.)

When I manually rotate the chainring backwards, the sound is less pronounced but still reproducible, even when pulling the chain backward. Sadly, it’s also audible in certain situations while riding trails, at least it seems to me that this is the sound that I hear. If that is the case, this makes this motor in some situations more noisy that the EP8 or Bosch G4 motors. I don't think this is normal as it is right now, at least I really hope so. It could also be that this clicking noise is normal for that motor and the noises I hear are coming from somewhere else.

Of course, I’ll be contacting my dealer and Specialized and will report back on how things progress.

Question to fellow Levo 4 owners:
Could you try a similar test as shown in the video and let me know what it sounds like on your bike? Same noise? Quieter? Or no sound at all?
Just push the bike backwards slowly or turn the bike upside down and very slowly rotate the rear wheel backwards.

These sounds don't seem proper for a new bike, sorry I don't have one to compare but definitely not a keeper in my book... Are these a wire and plugs underneath the motor?

The plastic dust cover between the crank and the motor. Make sure it’s not fouling the motor surface.

My motor got replaced for this very same reason

Mine also had that noise present when going downhill. Is your quiet downhill? Or do you hear a rattle?
 
I checked mine today and it makes exactly the same sound, when going down hard i hear a ratling sound.
 
Finished building out my bike and took it on its first ride. It's great. A 200mm dropper managed to be just right when slammed all the way down, which is quite nice. No motor or battery issues to report. Managed to wash my front wheel about 15 seconds after taking this photo and chewed up my forearm/elbow pretty bad. That was a fun 15 mile limp home. I'd say maybe 50% getting used to Mavens and 50% just a bad off camber with loose over hard.

The fire in the background is just California being California.

Not a constant rattle (like EP8, Bosch G4), but rather a rare knocking in the motor area in quite rough sections on the trail. Not absolutely sure if it's really the motor or something else, but it sounds similar.

How is it for you? Clicking noise while reverse rotation of the rear wheel is completely gone with the new motor? Is yours now silent in downhill sections or is it similar with what I just described?

Im waiting for new motor but this one make the same noise as yours rotating reverse and when going down hard it ratle. The ratle is less when i put some foam around the baterry please check photos on pervious posts. Maybe on the photos looks shit but it works till specialized change something.

I literally took it on yesterday and after 4miles of road to the trail and 1 mile of dirt it started skipping. I have literally had more skipping / no shifts on this bike in a single day then I have on my other bikes in a year. Crazy... but at this point electronic shifting seems like garbage.

One other issue with the Transmission is it always seems to skip in 3rd gear. I don’t hardly use that gear, so not a big deal for me. On my 3rd warranty cassette and all have had the issue with 3rd gear. Still love the system overall though, I do the fine tuning in the other gears.

Every motor is going to have failures. Even the most reliable motors will have a certain number of early lifecycle failures. We can’t determine anything about the general reliability of the new gen 4 motor based on one forum member needing a replacement.

If you only think one motor has needed replacement, then you have missed quite a few other posts.

No that’s still there. It’s a characteristic of that motor. When you rotate it slowly backward the sprag clutch hasn’t released causing the gears to mesh making that noise. The knocking noise I was hearing was caused by a bad sprag clutch taking too much force to release
 
like mentioned in posts before - that sound you hear when slowly moving the bike backwards is quite normal on most motors, if yours does not do it - it probably will eventually. My motor made loud clacking noise mid climb and stopped giving power. I wouldn't worry about that noise the clutch makes. My bike was fixed in 3 days, nobody else will give you that turn around on a new motor.

I know there’s been a few others in the thread who had issues but I don’t think the number of instances of people posting about motor replacements has been particularly high or higher than Bosch, etc. but maybe I’m wrong.
