Pic of the Day

Quick ride this morning around / over my local fell. Some road (getting there / back) but mainly either fell paths or forest track. Nice little loop with some techie stuff coming down Bummers (no sniggering at the back). 25km with 688m of ascent.

Today's ride into the world of wonderful art.
In 2022, two climate activists took action and threw orange paint over the Monolith and six other sculptures in the park. Some of the paint on the Monolith has not been possible to remove.
In 1999, the Monolith has had a giant condom put over it as part of an AIDS campaign.
Whether it's for a good or bad cause, these vandals deserve something that doesn't end in print.

It was my 55th birthday recently so I grabbed a date and went over to (high-end Mexican steakhouse) Toca Madera - Scottsdale. Of course it isn’t a celebration until the pyrotechnics come out, but flowers as a garnishment for asparagus was notable enough to break out the camera.

Nice. Upon moving to Arizona I learned how spectacular the sunrises and sunsets are here. Apparently the low humidity enhances the glow. Add a little clouds for increased color and we’re in for a good one.

After working a night shift, a normal person would have gone to sleep—so what do I do instead? I take the opportunity to go for a nice mountain outing to the Ungarina and Confin alpine huts. I deliberately chose easy routes due to the lack of sleep; I didn’t know what condition I’d be in, so I didn’t want to risk tackling more demanding trails.

Great ride with Mrs irie today. Pic is the River Lavant which is a winterbourne, rapidly drying out.

The white flowered weeds clogging up the river, which will soon be completely dry, is Common Water Crowfoot.

Then on the way back came across a bunch of idiots on Surron bikes popping wheelies among the Bank Holiday families out walking with their kids on a shared pedestrian and cycle path. They didn't like me taking a photo after the first bunch of idiots had already passed by

It seems they’ve already suggested the appropriate punishment—painful and symbolic.

Today’s ride at Lake Pleasant in unseasonably cool weather (mid 70’s) for this time of year. We’ll be in triple digits this coming weekend. Even the wild burros were out mid-day. Unfortunately they felt the need to leave plenty of “fertilizer” along my entire route.

Yeah, it got down to 72° (22° C) and felt the need for a light hoodie. Not kidding. I think I’m developing Arizona blood.

Arizona blood is a real thing. It was 73 with a breeze and cloud cover when I started out and I almost put on another layer. Once you’ve been through a summer or two, you may turn into a cold weather wimp like me. 60’s, no wind, in direct sun is doable. Add a breeze or shade and it’s “where’s my sweatshirt”?

No artwork to see on today's ride, just someone smoking some crack outside the shop door, so it was a bit difficult to get in to buy something to drink, then on past the father and mother who were taking good care of the newborn flock and into the forest, up hills and down deep valleys.

Following last year's succesful early May Bank Holiday trip to Ballater we booked up the same accomodation again and spent four nights there from Friday 1st to departure on the 5th ..
In between times Alan , Ant , Dave, Rob, Tony & myself had a blast riding some of the best local trails in the area ..which inculded...
Friday afternoon / evening : The Green Mile
Saturday morning : Heartbreak Ridge
Saturday Afternoon: A loop which took us from Milton Tullich / Creagan Riabach/ Peters Hill/ Tom Garchory / Marquis of Huntlys Well..and cracking singletrack on the side of Crannach Hill back down to Milton .
Sunday : A rest day for me ( always the plan ) ..Tarland 2 for the rest of the lads .
Monday : Starting with a car journey to Inverry ..a there & back trip up Glen Quoich then onwards to Bein A Bhuird ..
Ant ,Dave, Rob & Tony ..made it all the way to North Top for a snowball fight ..and a stunning descent ..
Alan was really feeling under the weather having developed a heavy cold and didnt fancy the climb when at the beginning of the singletrack the gradient ramped up significantly and having looked at it myself we discussed and then did a ride up Glen Lui to Derry Lodge then following the Derry Burn up the left side to the bridge and back down the other ( where the water bars have been smoothed out to be bike friendly )
In between the riding some really nice evening meals & a few drinks ..
Our mate Wayne @The EMF was a big miss as in the end his recovery from broken ribs & shoulder cuff injuries ruled him out ..but there will be other trips ( Derbyshire next year is currently out in front ).
The pics are a mix of everyones in no particular order..
