My fear of the analog MTB.

I got back into MTB riding a little less than a year age. A good friend of mine got me wanting in but I would only do it on a EMTB. well it has worked out great! at 53 years old and not in the best cardio shape it was the smartest thing I could have done to not turn me off from MTB riding.

2 mouths ago (do to a MTB crash) I had rotator cuff surgery. Well sitting at home with nothing to do but watch YouTube videos and on line shop I picked up a Niner RIP 9 RDO 29 a mounth ago. Figured I would ride it when I'm healed up. Thing is I think I might depend on the power from my EMTB to much. I haven't even rode the Niner yet. Even around the block lol. I think it will be great at bike parks and downhill trails were there is an up lift but I am a bit shy to try to ride it on a single track it the near buy mountains. the teck stuff and all seem a bit challenging without trail mode! My fitness will get better as I am a bike officer at a casino so when I get back to work I will work on that but still. EMTB's are so much fun and I hate to huff and puff! I like options but I may have gotten in over my head on this one lol. The Niner sure is pretty though!:)

I think riding the analog bikes keep me from thinking I am Superman compared to the analog riders I rip by when I'm on my Emtb. Here in Arizona, emtb's are still a rarity so mostly analog mtb's on the trail. Most of my riding buddies are still on analog bikes so I ride analog at least once a week with them. I find power intervals are much more effective on the analog bike or alternatively on my ebike with the motor turned off. That niner looks like it wants to be ridden at least occasionally. The ebike has made me a better analog rider and the analog bike has helped my ebike riding too. In the end it's all riding a bike to have fun and feed your inner ten year old. So go have fun however you want to do it.

I had a rotator cuff re-repair end of December last year. I'm 57 and been riding mtbs for over 12 years. I got an emtb 18 months ago to make it easier to stay with my mates.

We went to Morzine last July for 3 days and rented analogue enduro bikes. I rode a bit of up hill but mainly DH after the chair lift to the top. Loadsa fun and no need for an emtb.

I am now selling my Vitus E-Sommet to buy an analogue enduro 29er. I just prefer a lighter bike and have got sick of the extra weight of an emtb. I still have a 2016 Stumpjumper so can ride analogue if I want but fancy a slacker enduro 29er as well.

Ride the Niner RIP 9 but just take it easy. The fitness will come... eventually!

Funny you should mention that you may sell your ebike. While I can't see doing that mainly because my best friend has the endurance of Lance Armstrong and it's the only way I can keep up with him, The sales man of the Niner told me I would be ditching the ebike after I get out on the Niner for the same reasons you want to sell the emtb.

Glad to hear your repair went well. I'm still healing but still manage to get out one the emtb and ride xc trails(no big jumps) comfortably.

I have gotten use to the wight of the ebike and so I am willing to guess I will have a lot of fun on a bike half the LB's. My girlfriend got a Trek Fuel EX 7 to go along with her Haibike sduro fullseve3.0. We took them to the Tuthill campground bike park in Flagstaff and she barely rode the Haibike. She really liked the light wight of the Trek. I will get that Niner out as soon as I feel my shoulder won't hinder my riding experience. Your so right about feeding that inner 10 year old. Just talking to my big sister about that yesterday. She said I'm still a kid the thinks he's Evel Knievel lol.. Maybe she's right;)

It might be worth getting your best friend tested, before you decide to sell up ..:LOL:

My eMTB got me riding lots more and rejuvenated my love for MTB in general. I’m now riding my analog bike more and prefer it for most riding, plus I do like the grinding up the accents to keep in shape.

I still have plenty of time for my eMTB though, it’s so much fun and great for local parks with no uplift. The other benefit of riding my MTB more is that when I do get on my eBike it feels ridiculous ?

I agree with everything that everyone has said. I think of riding bikes like I think of food. We all like to eat. We also like different things to eat and even at different times. So that old saying" different strokes for different folks" rings true to me. I do want both analog and ebike to realize we all have a right to ride the trail like the hikers have the same right to hike the trail. Although it sounds corny, we all need to get along and share our trails without animosity, At least it's a goal.

Ride it! Just did an awesome ride today on my Giant Trance. The bike is so light and responsive. Just love it. Recommend you just go slow on the climbs at first staying out of the red zone and enjoy the difference. See where that takes you.

I enjoy riding my Vitus E-Sommet (when it works) and my old 26" hardtail. Just did MBR and Dragons Back at Coed Y Brenen this weekend on the hardtail. Both are very different bikes.

I 100% agree with @sb5050 - ebiking helps my normal bike riding and vice-versa.

It's hard to work on my DH technical skills if my legs and lungs are blown out from the climb. The eeb lets me experiment with different lines and techniques that work alot better when I transfer them to the light regular bike.

Beyond the fitness benefits of riding a regular bike - I find myself more focused on efficiency and 'flowy' riding which means more battery in the tank back on the eeb.

Well I have taken the Niner out twice now and I have to say.... I will be keeping my Focus Jam2!! The Niner is a great bike. I love the light wight and nimble handing and it's a bit eraser to jump but the no assist has me gasping for air! I have a sore throat from breathing so hard just trying to keep a 5mph/8KPH on mild inclines. I even swapped out the front chainring for a 30t down from the 32 the bike came with. It helps with the steep hills but nothing like eco mode let alone trail or boost. It will be great for up lifts and bike pump tracks and east going trails but it will never replace my ebike. I don't fell the need to work so hard to have fun... It's a keeper though.(y)
