I dont have a gen 4 but I understood that the battery life is worse than the one on the gen 3. I noticed that the gen 4 has a 48 V motor, shouldnt this motor consume less battery than all the others which have 36 V?

There’s a few reasons the bigger battery doesn’t last as long and it’s all user interface issues , everyone loves the power how fast it gets to the wheel how far the bike shuttles over techi uphill yup all great but al the settings are at full tilt , shuttle overrun and response and in turbo 🤦🏼‍♂️ this guy explains it easy enough

People can tune the motor settings to get the range they need. A 840wh battery is more than enough fir the rumored power increase. Bosch and Amflow bot use 800wh batteries. Specilaized would be shooting themselves more in the foot by not offering a power increase in order to keep up with the competition.

They may have also done some work on the firmware to bring some efficiency improvements also.
 
I just rode Carvin’s Cove in VA on my gen 4. At the end we rode Hi-De-Ho, a fairly steep trail ridden primarily downhill with about 40% battery left. We were running out of time and wanted to do it again so we rode straight up the trail in turbo twice to come back down (it’s a two way trail - even though going up is torture on a normal bike). The thought did occur to me that it would be nice to have 810 watts to go up the trail even faster. For a few reasons:

- time constraints
- it’s even faster to get to the fun part
- bragging rights

Not having it is fine. We still had fun. Having it as an option is better.

Exercising an option like this is harder on the motor and battery, and it is a less efficient way to spend available energy. In the end, I don’t really care. If we do get this upgrade one day, I’ll use it on occasion. If we don’t, I still love my bike.

All I’m wondering now is will we really get it? When? How will it be implemented? What other features might we get? Will it fix the issue on my bike where my screen turns off while charging the battery and the bike becomes unresponsive until I unplug it and turn it on?

Like I said, they have a 48V and the competition a 36V. I am not an expert but I understood that the 48 should consume less battery.

I will try...hope u get the physics of it...as @sethimus is saying...there is no magical formula that can cheat physics.

The only difference that aids to a slightly better efficiency is the lower amperage that the higher Gen 4 voltage system enables. That happens by less heat being produced and so there are less looses, but I would say it's almost negligible at system this small. The other advantage is that the system can run to 0% battery without significant battery sag(u feel that on the 36V systems as less power when battery goes below cca 15%).

I will do the comparison at max power as all other power levels depend on to many motor setting(factory firmware, user,...) factors.

Gen 3 Levo
36V System
700Wh Battery
565W Peak power motor

Theoreticaly at full power:
565W/36V = 15,7A
700Wh/565W = 1h15min of riding

Gen 4 Levo
52V System
840Wh Battery
666W/720W Peak power motor

Theoreticaly at full power:
720W/52V = 13,9A
840Wh/720W = 1h10min of riding
666W/52V = 12,8A
840Wh/666W = 1h16min of riding

As you can see the poor man's 666W Gen 4 should be just as efficient as the Gen 3, while the dentist version is slightly less efficient due to higher power output, just like others say (more power = more fuel).

As overall the efficiency of the 666W version Gen 4 and the Gen 3 is fairly similar the settings on the Gen 4 will have a significant impact on efficiency.

So if you think about it, the Gen 4 is overall a heavier emtb(not much but it does need a bit more juice then the gen 3) and with the power avaliable most people tend to use it, so overall the sentiment is going to be it's less efficient, small things add up.

FWIW I understand the OTA implementation is the hold-up. Release date is now "February"
 
Just speculating but maybe it's not about changing power output at all but just preparation for next year's model. Could be something like 29er support, new motor firmware in the next production runs, wireless remote.. 👀

what do you not understand when people describe the content of the shortly available specialized university video, describing the future power upgrade?

I have a LEVO 4 expert ("small" power) and confirm after 6 months of use that I have exactly the same autonomy on my kown trails that with my previous LEVO 3, but obviously with a little more power.

See the below that was posted while the video was still up. Specialized may have other stuff in the pipeline but there is definitely an update the the existing Levo 4 models coming.

Not a massive update. Some changes but it won’t compete with the current gen4 will be aimed at a different market….
