• Warning!!

Riding a tuned or deristricted EMTB is not a trivial offence and can have serious legal consequences. Also, many manufacturers can detect the use of a tuning device or deristricting method and may decline a repair under warranty if it was modified from the intended original specification. Deristricting EMTB's can also add increased loads for motors and batteries. Riding above the local law limit may reclassify the bike as a low-powered bike, requiring insurance, registration and a number plate.

Be aware of your local country laws. Many laws prohibit use of modified EMTB's. It is your responsibility to check local laws. Ignoring it, has potential implications to trail access, and risk of prosecution in the event of an accident.

@Rudie I'm sure it would have been discussed before if it were possible, but I just wanted to double check if there is any ability to change the "Class" of the bike with your tools. The 20mph/32kph limit is what we call "Class 1" here in the USA, but we also have a "Class 3" category which has a 28mph/45kph limit. In the past, it was mostly commuter bikes for the road which came in Class 3 configuration, but Specialized and Amflow have added the ability to switch this setting (between Class 1 and 3) for the end user on their mountain bikes.

I was hoping that if the Bosch Gen 5 motors are used on some Class 3 commuter bikes (not sure if they are or are not), then there might be the ability to change this master setting using your software. I think I recall hearing about something like that with some Shimano software a while ago, where you could basically tell the motor that it is actually installed on a different category of bike, in order to unlock the class 3 setting. If that were possible, it would offer the benefit of allowing greater than 20mph speeds while keeping an accurate speed readout (in contrast to the 1/2 speed of the 64kph modification).

hello, for the firmware update do you need a usb connection from the pc to the bike? (if yes, where is located the usb port? Do you need to unscrew the motor housing?)

I have a Riese Muller Charger 5
Looks like you have a purion 200 which means there is a usb-c connection at the end of the unit under a rubber flap. Just plug it in to your computer from there

Knowing the way Bosch control the speed limits, they may play the hard game if they knew.

... but how would they know ? Taking a bike to a shop for an issue wouldnt reveal a higher speed limit unless the shop took it for a test ride and grassed you up.

Having the new text warning at startup might trigger some dealers to look into it.

With the Flow app you can change the top speed for any/all modes back to 25 kmh!

If you have a kiox display then simply remove it before taking the bike to a shop and disable all the locks on the Flow app. so they can power it up and then no text warning!

@Rob Rides EMTB Right then, let me translate this fever dream of a thread:

**The TL;DR:**
Rudie offers "visiting the US without visa hassle" for Bosch Smart System bikes at 40 Euros via TeamViewer. Then his phone dies, WhatsApp vanishes, and everyone panics thinking the Bosch secret police finally got him. He's alive - just technologically compromised. Find him on Facebook apparently.

**The key bits:**
- 32km/h "US Mode" unlocks available (most popular option)
- 64km/h option exists but requires the halved wheel circumference trick, so your speedo shows half speed (maths!)
- @TheKaiser asking the real questions about Class 3 (45km/h) - no clear answer yet on whether Bosch Gen 5 can be told it's secretly a commuter bike
- Connection is via USB-C on your display (Purion 200 has it under a rubber flap, Kiox 500 apparently different)
- @Joecrow dropping the pro tip: remove your Kiox before visiting the dealer so they don't see the startup warning text

**Alternative source:** Ebike Doctor on Facebook getting good reviews from @The_Stoddy

Personally I'm on a Levo so this is all just entertainment for me, but I do enjoy watching the Bosch community develop increasingly elaborate spy protocols. The rubber flaps, the display removal, the "definitely not modified, officer" energy... beautiful stuff.

Description Bosch Smart System 32 KM/H USA Speed Change

No speed chip, software solution.

Works with all magnets, and bikes with abs.

We will set your bike to 32 km/h.

A maximum speed limit of 64 km/h is also possible, but the display will show half speed.

We then change wheel size to half!

Also activate the eMTB+ mode, powermore, if you don't have it yet

Everything is done remotely!

You will need a laptop/PC, a USB-C cable, and TeamViewer.
I'm interested in getting this done. Many thanks, Eamon

Just had mine done. Thanks Rudie!

Tip for anyone wanting it doing. Don't use a usb-c to usb-c cable, my PC didn't see the bike using that. (I tried 2 cables!)

Had to use a usb-a to usb-c for it to work for some reason.

Whatsapp working again!

Hi Rudy, glad you're back online! I don't want to bother you, but just wanted to confirm if you saw my question earlier in this thread, regarding, is it possible using your software, for you to configure a bike as a "Class 3" (28mph limit) USA e-bike, rather than a "Class 1" (20mph limit) USA e-bike?

In the past, Class 3 has been more common in commuter bikes intended for road usage, although now Specialized and Amflow MTBs have given the end user the ability to switch between classes. In the past, it was also possible for some high level dealer software to switch the class on some Shimano motors, basically telling the motor it is now installed on a different type of bike. Is there any chance that you have access to that level of configuration on Bosch Gen 5 motor configuration menus? 🙏

New Jersey have just changed Ebike laws. Wonder if this will have a knock-on effect with what speeds are available in flow. Can’t see how it could be manageable to have different speed restrictions per state!

CLASS3 use an speed engine different hardware:(

Also new forum member price 35 euro!
Thanks for the reply. It sounds like you really know the system and it's configuration! I figured the Class 3 change would be too simple, or else everyone would already be going that route, but I just wanted to double-check.

Since Class 3 is not achievable, I like the idea of the 64kmph modification. My understanding is that it is achieved by reducing the wheel circumference in the firmware. Have you had any issues with users getting 504 Errors using this method? The hardware-based methods that fool the system into thinking the wheel is going slower than reality seem to have a fairly high occurrence of 504 Errors on the Gen 5 bikes due to the Smart System determining that the average of the "output power to wheel speed" ratio falls outside their predefined "plausibility window".

Given that the Smart System can detect mismatches in those values created by other methods, I am having trouble seeing how reducing the programmed wheel size at the firmware level won't create the same problem. Can you help me to understand if there is something I am missing, and let me know how successful the modification has been with other users?

64kmph modification done since last 9 january.
450 km traveled since this date.
No errors so far.🤞

Hi Rudie, i contacted you before on both facebook messenger and whatsapp but messages now dont seem to be “seen”. Thats on both. Keen to get this done asap please. Roger Walker.
