Bike Park Wales

Full face is a must for bpw. Or dental insurance.
Why? surely it's the nature of the trails you ride, wherever they are. I've done a few blues at BPW and did not feel that full face was any more essential than for blue trails elsewhere. Having said that I have just purchased a Troy Lee Stage and intend to wear it most of the time. Even on blue trails :)

On Blue trails you tend to be travelling twice as fast...

The speed you carry on the blues leaves little margin for error. One screw up and you’re shopping for a new chin in open face

Was that a d4? Broke a Stage on Sixtapod a couple of years back, lost the front wheel off the top of a berm and superman’s onto my chin.

I tend to wear a full face everywhere including BPWs
They dont really interfere with even my day to day rides as there much better ventilated these days and not much heavier than a good open face
Each to there own thou others would disagree
Im also not a fan of the dentist :)

Your missing my point which was not about the danger of blue trails. I agree. My comment was more about why BPW.

There’s a fairly big difference between a blue at BPW and a forestry trail center.
Then we will have to agree to disagree. I found the blues at BPW to be on a par with FOD only longer. Technically I didn't feel any difference.

Went last year. Honestly, after the third run down, even the short climb to where the bus picks up is knackering! It’s pretty intense.

as someone that rides Bpw regularly, I can say that theres some nasty injuries on the 'easier' trails🤨

people seem to think they are invincible and go maximum attack - and as to entering trails above their pay-grades & riding / pushing around trail qualifiers (red trails & upwards) thats just stupidity:rolleyes:

wear as much protection as you can, if not needed then you were prepared BUT if needed you'll be thankfull(y)

You could argue thou that the trails being longer could lead to fatigue quicker (terrys belly being 2.6miles long for just one example) and we all make mistakes especially after a full day on the bike
Just another outlook on the comments by the way not a stir (y)

You could argue all sorts of things that would be valid but the point I was making was about singling out BPW i.e. the inference that BPW was more dangerous than other places regardless of grade. That may not be what the OP meant but that is how I read it.

Grading is a complex subject, as it is often very inconsistent between different locations, and riders often assume that an XC grading and a DH grading are equivalent. (For example a rider might assume that riding the red at Swinley would mean they can ride a red at Dyfi on their Hardtail 29er). Even between different locations of the same type, gradings are inconsistent, A417 project, BPW and DYFI are wildly different. Similarly compare a Blue DH trail at Fod (Launchpad) to a blue at Chatel:

In conclusion, if you like having teeth, wear full face.

That's blue? Crikey. I take it there is no avoiding it? I don't need to be persuaded to wear FF. I've just bought a new full face TLD Stage as my Bell DH convertable was too heavy and uncomfortable. I intend to wear it for all riding from now on. Assuming of course I get on with it on a ride.

There is a chicken line for the creek gap, and the one before, but it’s non obvious what you are getting into if you don’t take the chicken line.

Brings back memories. We stayed at Rude Chalets in Morzine and our host came up sort on that and fractured his collarbone.

The grades for climbing are also contentious but considering the infinite variations they reach a remarkable consensus. Even then some areas differ, but there are far more grades than simply green, blue, red and black so that may explain why. Similar with skiing, Chamonix blues and reds are known for being harder than blues and reds in other areas.

Hi All,

Me and my son are looking at going to Bike Park Wales next month. Has anyone got any experience on riding up and also queuing for the uplift?

I guess my queries are, if we ride up on the e-bikes, are they going to run out of battery quite quick and therefor finish our day early or have to charge them and lose a couple of hours of riding (my sons battery is a 500wh and mine a 625wh), or, we get the uplift passes and queue.

I’ve seen a few people saying that the queues can be quite bad, even on weekdays, is this still an issue or have they sorted this out by running more uplifts? The dates on the queue time complaints where 3-4 years back.

Look forward to hearing your experiences and suggestions. Thanks in advance.
Hi, I take my Specialized SL 320 battery on the uplift and battery is fine. You can charge bike (internal battery) for an hour for free or removable battery for 30 mins.

I have been a few times recently (all at the weekend) and the queues are basically non-existant. The worst it'll get is first thing in the morning when the uplift opens, because everyone jumps straight on, then from there on everyone kinda spreads out.

When I say "worst" I don't think we ever queued for more than about 5 minutes. Most of the time you walk into the queue section and get straight to the end before you can even catch your breath for your last run. The uplift vans run constantly and they just opened a new quicker route up the hill to allow them to run even faster. Honestly, queuing just isn't a thing at BPW in my experience.

The uplift isn't at the bottom of the hill though, it's slightly up the hill, so you do have to pedal a bit back up to the uplift. It's not far, but my unfit body was knackered from the downhills, so was pretty ruined by the time I got in the queue. Having 5 minutes to cool down before loading your bike was a blessing, not a curse and gives you a brief moment to chat to your riding buddies.

I have an ebike and a manual and personally wouldn't take the ebike here. It's more fun on a lighter bike and easier to lift the bike onto the uplift trailer. Also, the runs can absolutely batter you, so probably not ideal for the components of an ebike. That said, many do take them and it would probably be nice to have the power to get back to the uplift.

Definitely get an uplift pass though. I wouldn't want to ride back up. You'll get far more runs in with un uplift pass and enjoy the day more.

Have fun! 👍

Personally i take 2x 700wh to make it worthwhile.
I only ever go midweek, avoiding school holidays etc. The queue has never been an issue if im uplifting.
Would you use turbo all the time ? . Fair ride using two batteries. I can only compare with Tarland I would get 23 miles ish out of a battery and 4000ft would not be in turbo all the time though . Not sure I could manage 2 batteries.

Always have a good time there with the uplift.
Only go once or twice a year but been going since the beggining.

I’d say the place is getting more busy each year, but the uplift has gotten quicker ques (generally more trucks running).

Last two times has been on my
Lighter weight e bike (fuel exe) which was fine lifting onto the trailers (similar to a dh bike really).
Last time had on max output and pushed friends a bit to uplift with still 50% left.

Really helps the legs getting back to the uplift and the initial part of some trails.

So legs are fresher for bump absorption:)

The middle setting on specialized. Seems pointless to me to drive a long way then not have enough battery. Plus power starts to tail off at under 3 bars, so i swap out then usually. No idea on distance/climbing etc, i don't track any of that.
Ive tried a powerbank but it doesn't recharge quickly enough during the day. Probably would on the dji fast charging bikes though.

I rarely use trail , eco or turbo. Never noticed it tailing offat 3 bars I would need to record and study that one.

Thanks for the feedback. I’ve got us uplift passes for Saturday and Sunday. I’d certainly prefer to use a standard bike but I’ve only got an e-bike and don’t really fancy spending a load of money hiring one from the bike park. I’m sure it’ll be fine.

Just picked up a full sus manual bike for my son the other day so he’ll be using that and I’ll probably do a couple runs on it, quite interested to see/feel the difference.

I don’t suppose you’ve been to FOD and have any advice for riding there? We’re going up early Friday now so we’re planning on doing a day there.

FOD is my local centre. The trails are not as long as BPW but long enough to be engaging. Not to be missed is the Verderers XC trail, one of the best blues in the country allegedly. I would also recommend Countdown and Launchpad. One follows on after the other to give a good length flowy and very fast blue DH trail. After these the downhills are a little more gnarly especially in the lower half where the hillside steepens. The upper halfs however are easier angled and can be "sessioned". All the trails are well mapped and signposted and the majority of the downhills start from the same place. Freeminers is another XC trail graded Red. It's recently been re arranged and a good optional downhill section added called Boneyard. Slightly outside the centre but still within pedalling distance are some very good off-piste trails but these may be difficult to find without local knowledge so I would stick to the centre, there's plenty to keep you occupied for a day. Almost forgot, there are also a few skills areas to practice specific obstacles.

At the hub there are toilets, a cafe, a shop and bike hire facilities. As the name suggests the trails are mostly through forest. Biking is free but parking is not. Not sure of the cost as I have an annual ticket. I feel very lucky to live only 20 minutes away. Have fun.

I’ll check that out on Wednesday when I’m there. Hopefully I don’t die at fod before bpw on the Thursday. Excited now.

Loops are Verderers (Blue), Freeminers and Adit (Red)

DH runs from the start mound, Blue, Red and Black. Also on the Worcester Lodge side you have Red and Black DH runs.

There is also an uplift, pay as you go is possible.

New trails built and funded by Dean Trail Volunteers are Twisted Sister (Red) from start mound and Bone Yard (Red) Off Verderers (Blue).

Jump and drop line on Freeminers (Red) funded by DTV and YT can be found at the beginning of the loop.

There is a direct path up to the start mound, begins just behind the PBA hire yard. Just off that is the new practice area and Old Bob (Green) loop funded by FE.

Enjoy.
