All new lighter, 'Brose Drive S Mag' motor announced

I still reckon an adapter plate could be made its just engineering and i know somebody who is very good at that. The big problem would getting hold of the motor

You are right about getting the motor, I can’t get a 1.3 motor anywhere, let alone one of these bad boys?

I know I keep harping on about it but I wish they had angled the socket positions downwards by 45 degrees to use gravity to prevent water ingress into the motor....
So you had water inside the connector? Inside the motor? I'm surprised as these type of connectors are pretty much immune against this.

Thats one of the good points of using Shimano motors, shimano parts are easily available online and with discounts.I'm not pushing for Shimano here, I'm just saying all manufacturers should look at shimano regarding this.
 
Not using the same form of attaching to the frame on sucessive generations of motors is a bad move for customers and frame designers alike - unless it really makes real geometry improvments possible . Hope Shimano doesn't also go that route when they anounce a successor to the current E8000 motor.

I know brands expect us to change bikes every 4 years at the most but if we buy a eMTB and the next year a new better lighter motor comes out, it would be great to just be able to replace the motor. The same goes for future lighter and more powerfull batteries.

I'm guessing that manufacturers are asking for smaller motors in order to have more flexibility in positioning. The number of posts I see regarding how big the Bosch motor is, I can entirely understand why the new motors are smaller (and lighter).

However, please see the photos below, it is fairly clear that they are not immune

The good news is I have a good preventative maintenance regime now which takes about 40 minutes to complete. My local trails are in a forest so I had to install small pieces of foam into the 3 areas where water, mud and pine needles were getting in. The foam stops all the mud and pine needles but still allows water in. The water flows through and out of the sump holes now as it should. Before, the mud and pine needles just clogged the sump hole and the water had nowhere to go...... hence the photos below due to major build up.....
I also use corrosion block spray on all the connections now which works as a very good water barrier. Now, as long as I take the covers off every week if it has been raining a lot and dry everything out, it appears to have resolved the issue.

I know many people on the forum live in much sunnier climbs so will never have this issue. For me, an IP67 motor would be more preferable for my location.

Are you saying I could go online today and buy a complete Shimano motor and all the accessories required to get it working if my out of warranty motor failed today?

Yes, Just a few days ago I saw shimano motors in stock here, they are now out of stock

This store and several others have batteries, chargers, motors, displays, cranks, chainrings, speed sensors, controllers, etc, etc, etc. As far as I could tell only shimano and Bosch parts are findable online.

whow, that looks bad. But can't you just seal the edges of the motorhousings with silicone? That should work as dirt AND water barrier.

This is great guys!!! A good lesson for Specialized to get their act together and be more open to allow owners on Levo/Kenevos to purchase their motors.

My ebike is the 2017 model.
The motor housings are not the problem. Only water seeps through there and flows out through the sump holes 'as designed'.

It is the huge hole on the drive side at the back by the chainstay where most of the crap 'used' to get in. Silicone will not work here as you can see by the photo it is too large a gap to fill and it is a moveable pivot point which is why I use a piece of cut foam that fits under the motor housing and blocks everything but water.

The other points of ingress are on the other side where the brake and sensor cables exit out of the motor housing and the other point of ingress is the cable route where the plug connects from the battery to the motor. I have cut and fitted foam for these positions as well. As I said above, this and my new maintenance regime appears to have resolved the problem.

Well, it's a bit extreme but if you remove the plastic housing the water will not accumulate and the connectors will surely resist to splashing water.
Apologies, I still do not understand you. Are you suggesting I remove the plastic outer motor covers permanently?
 
Apologies, I think you may have misunderstood me. I do not have an issue anymore.
As I said in the above post #42, With the foam in place and my new maintenance regime it appears I have resolved my moisture build up problem.

Yes, but at the cost of a laborious maintenance if you have to do it every wet week.

I'm surprised that there is no other report like yours as you're not alone riding in these conditions.

Pop open the covers on most ebike motors and you will be surprised at how much crap gets in there
 
The problem with fully sealing the motor enclosure is heat retention.
 
No mention of when this will be shipping on new bikes. A dealer here in the USA told me probably not until late 2019, but I get the impression he was just guessing.

Agreed, and in the environment I am riding in where most of the time it is raining and muddy it would be a recipe for disaster
 
The problem with fully sealing the motor enclosure is heat retention.
I have the recommend heat pad installed ?
Also, one of the great things about using the BLevo App is it gives you a constant read out of the motor temperature so I can keep a close eye on what is happening on that front and so far, especially in this current UK heatwave all is good. Thank you sooooo much @PaoloBLEvo love your App!

This new motor looks perfect for my style of riding, 410% assistance and 90 Nm of torque may push me over the edge to buy my first new ebike.
I think this weekend will be a 'get all my analogue frames ready to sell' weekend.

Im really excited about this new motor. I think *if it does* go into the new Levo we will see it under 20KG, which would be incredible.

Motor specialist Brose presents their new high-end motor: magnesium housing, new electronics and special sensors provide more power with less weight and smaller dimensions. Also, there are three new remotes and displays available across the range from minimalist to all the information you could ever need.
So far, the Brose Drive S convinced us above all with its natural riding feel and the non-existent pedalling resistance. However, it’s large dimensions have previously made life difficult for many bike manufacturers. This is set to change with the new Drive S Mag. With the new magnesium housing, the motor has shrunk by 15 % and should also be about 500 g lighter. Despite the diet, the new motor is more powerful than its aluminium equivalent, providing 410% support instead of 380%. The torque remains unchanged at 90 Nm but should now be usable over a wider cadence range. On the trail, this means that the motor’s full power is available even at a lower cadence.

New riding mode – Flex Power Mode
Besides the new housing, the Drive S Mag has also been equipped with new boards and chips, making it easier to combine the sensors inside. The result is a new riding mode at the highest support level. In Flex Power Mode, power delivery is controlled according to cadence and pedal force. As a result, Brose promises a significantly faster response from a standing start and thus significantly quicker when pulling away. Due to the hardware requirements, Flex Power Mode is only available in the new Drive S Mag.
New Remotes and Displays
Brose has released three new remote and display options. Specialized has been using Brose motors with a minimalist display-less remote on several of their models for some time now. A similar minimalist remote control is now available directly from Brose. The charge level and speed are indicated by small LEDs. It can also be coupled to a large display mounted centrally on the handlebars. In addition to the power levels, the colour display can show a great deal of additional information simultaneously.
