2019 Turbo Levo Owners Thread

Earlier in this thread someone said that the IP rating from the very first Levo model was IP56 and that apparently continues in 2019. Why they did not up the IP rating to IP57 I cannot understand, If they did that all the extra work they have to do now would not be needed.

I think for the heating...

IP56 = Water projected in powerful jets (12.5 mm nozzle) against the enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effects.

Test duration: 1 minute per square meter for at least 3 minutes
Water volume: 100 litres per minute
Pressure: 100 kPa at distance of 3 m

Sounds like a lot but it is only a garden hose at 3 meters distance - 1 kPa = 1 Bar.

IP56:

Made up of:

5 Dust protected Ingress of dust is not entirely prevented, but it must not enter in sufficient quantity to interfere with the satisfactory operation of the equipment.

But with the motor being inside the frame do you need to account for that also? I'm taking the IP56 rating as the actual motor unit, outside of the bike frame. Would you get additional protection from the motor housing / covers etc?

my bad I thought 2018 was IP 57

No the cover does not count as additional IP rating....

I agree it doesn't add to the rating but surely adds some additional protection from water / dust ingress when housed in the actual bike?

I'm assuming that when they tested the IP certification that it was a standalone motor outside of a bike frame.

By logic, it adds if the IP cover > IP motor...otherwise the IP remains that of the motor...

Based on my understanding of the ISO standards it should be measured in exactly the same environment as the finished product and that means that it is a fully assembled bike you are hosing down with a garden hose from 3 meters distance.

Well see this, is that sufficient? For me yes.

Just holding you to your own high standards! You said splash proof - that’s IP54 (all Bosch motors are IP54 rated BTW).

Challenge anyone to find eBike motors above IP56...

I can't see how the new plastic side cover will fit, that would suggest that there is an unused screw hole behind the current covers

I've ridden my new levo in the worst possible conditions a couple of weeks ago for over 3 hours.
Major water puddles and mud. No problems at all, just a clean with the hose and a brush, like new.

Seriously people, this thread appears to be getting out of control. Too much talk of problems that haven't actually happened yet. Do we have any reported Motor failures due to the holes in the casing of 2019 Levos?? If we do then fine, let's see the evidence and how Specialized are dealing with it and we can all voice our thoughts then.

Otherwise this appears to be creating a very bad atmosphere around something that may not even be a problem.

Everyone chill until the issues start to appear then you can all say I was wrong!!!

you are right, I agree.

How long are EBikes supposed to be ridden?
Hopefully Spec will have a goodwill if something will happen to the motor in 3-4 years because of this issue..

The point is that when the issues appear due to corrosion it will be too late for warranty claims and we will be screwed. It obviously is a problem that has happened to some 2017/2018 bikes and it will be even worse for 2019 bikes that don't get the 'fix'. If Specialized say that they will make the update to early bikes for free then I agree there will be no significant issue, but they haven't said that, yet !

From the Specialized warranty info page -
Q: What is NOT covered by your warranty?
A: Replacement of wear and tear parts, damage from a crash or other accidental damage, and damage from abuse or CORROSION are all examples of what is not covered.

I had an early 2007 Enduro SL with Spec forks and shock that had a bunch of issues. After a while Specialized decided to extend the warranty to 5 years and I got a new 2008 shock and fork internals at my first service for free. That is one reason why I choose to buy another bike off them and why I hope they will fix early bikes.

Exactly. I traded in my 2017 Levo for the 2019, and the 2017 had just had a new motor replacement 2 weeks before the 2 year warranty ran out. The issue was CORROSION...

Just to bring some positivity back to the thread, took the new Levo out for a test ride today and the motor is quiet, seriously quiet. The tyres are louder than the motor.

I'm impressed so far, early days but I was thinking the worst after all the reports and so far so good. Felt smooth with plenty of power, more than I expected.

Picked up a brand new Turbo Levo 2019 base model today after an impromptu visit to well known LBS in Crowthorne. Mentioned the issues raised on the forum to the guys in the shop who pretty much dismissed it as a problem that I should not be worrying about and that their faith in Specialized meant any such problems caused by this would be rectified under warranty anyway so what's to worry about.

Translated that to go and enjoy riding the bloody bike and any problems whatsoever, bring it back and it will be sorted.

So I'm going to do exactly that rather than stressing on what might be.
What colour did you get?

Black, Base model. Went in with the intentions of getting the Hyper and it did look good but they didn't have an XL so he wheeled out the black and it looked excellent, bought it there and then and took it home 40 minutes later.

I only went in to have a look and went home with a new bike.......wife wasn't best pleased but the opportunity was too good to miss ;)

Nice, I have preapproved budget (by my wife) for base model but will probably wait till all issues with the motor are sort out

Using a sponge to prevent unwanted entry, isn't that an old form of birth control?

Just got my alloy Comp in XL, its the "Airflow" version with the open top motor which I have covered with a rubber flap for now. Also has a noticeable whiny noise under load (silent in ECO). Both issues I will go back to shop for them to sort out, but in the meantime I'm just going to enjoy the riding, which is amazing.
