2017 Turbo Levo ST and woes

Hi,
I have a long and complicated story. I bought a 2017 turbo levo st in Dec of 17. It ran great with no issues until Dec of 18 when on a ride (on the road due to snow/mud) the bike "died" with around 35% battery. I limped home with the motor/battery kicking on for a couple pedal strokes occasionally. I took it to a different shop from where I bought it due to the owner of the shop I purchased it at not feeling confident about ebikes/batteries. The other shop i took it to said the battery was "bricked" due to a "bad cell" (I don't know what this means). They did a firmware update and said it was fixed. After that i tore my patellar tendon, went crazy, waited months to get my mental health better, then had surgery in Sept of 19. The bike was not ridden, or was ridden maybe a couple hours total, by my wife between Dec of 18 and now. Being that I was close to the 2 year warranty in Oct of 19 (and I would need the levo working for tendon rehabilitation) I took the levo back to the shop that said the bike was fixed just to make sure it would be functional when the surgeon released me to ride. They said the bike was in great health, charged me $60 and I took it home. Then in Feb of 20 my wife wanted to take it for a spin and the battery wouldn't turn on other than with red lights and beeping. I took it back to the shop that said it was fine in Oct of 19. They said the battery was dead, needed a new battery, was out of warranty, the new battery will cost $800. WTF (thank god I'm on high dose Zoloft and antipsychotics or i would have had a tantrum). I explained the situation again to them and they said they would talk to Specialized. I never heard back for a few months. I went to pick up the bike in late April because no one had any memory of the bike or the issue and they had to move 30 bikes out of a shed to access my Levo. I then took it back to the shop I purchased the bike at. He talked to Specialized and they said the battery is fine and to replace the cable that goes from the battery to the computer. I then rode the bike on the street a total of 3 times and then it died in the exact same manner as in Dec of 18. The mission control app says the bike is in great health. Specialized says due to the bike being out of warranty there is nothing they can or will do to help me. The battery has 600+ charges left before replacement is necessary, but it will not work reliably. Due to my patellar tendon rehab i cannot be put in a position where I have to walk home or pedal a 53lb bike, therefor the bike is useless. Due to Covid I have no money to spend on a battery. I have had many Specialized bikes in my life. Any problems I have had with their bikes were never supported by their warranty department. I am very frustrated, but it is my fault for supporting this company.
Thank you,
Nate

Sounds like a very sorry tale Nathan ..... specialised in our country, do seem to be having trouble with their bikes too..... think the moral of this story is don’t buy into their philosophy of “expensive is better”
You can get a far better bike, for far less money from most of the other E-bike companies

Can one of the shops lend you a battery to see if it rides ok or not? That should prove the source of the problem.

If it is the battery, maybe look for second hand ones here or on eBay?

That is a good idea. I will look into a used battery. I don’t think that any shops have that era of levo/battery in Reno but I can check around. As per the first responder, I need to get the current levo working just to sell it. As far as another brand of e mtb, what brand would you recommend. Btw I gotta have an in frame bottle cage?. thanks

@Specialized Rider Care Sounds like a possible issue which was never diagnosed and fixed correctly whilst in warranty and is still going on. Not sure if there's anything you can do to help ?

I 100% Believe this battery issue started while under warranty and was not solved at all. Since then I have been jerked around so much I don’t know what to do. I appreciate all of you guy’s suggestions.

I received a response back from Specialized warranty that was dissatisfactory (35% off a new battery plus tax plus shipping plus a new firmware update). Here is my response. I try to keep emotion out of emails but I don't believe I succeded.

Hi Curtis,
Thank you for continuing to pursue this Turbo Levo problem I’m experiencing. I read the recent response from Specialized warranty and, respectfully, I am dissatisfied with having to pay for a battery that should have been warrantied when I experienced this issue in Dec of ‘18 (~1 year after purchase). I have been a loyal Specialized customer since 1999 when I purchased the original fsr xc s works and have purchased 5 more high end Specialized bikes and products over the last 20 years. I took a chance “buying into” the ebike experience, and was very hesitant. But I went with a Specialized brand ebike after extensively asking questions about battery, computer and/or motor potential failures and was assured that Specialized would take great care of me. In all honesty this experience has 100% tarnished my opinion of Specialized, as this experience has been immensely frustrating in an already extremely difficult couple of years. I have gone over and above what a consumer should have to do to be taken care of, with a platform (ebike related complexity) I know nothing about and was distrustful of from the day of purchase. I am also confused that I have been having a battery problem for a year and a half yet Specialized says there is nothing wrong with the battery. Mission control says the motor and battery are healthy yet the bike dies on me without warning on rides. Specialized I urge you to listen to your customer’s experience, and not rely on your technology interface. When I tell my friends about what I have been experiencing here is what they say “Wow, it’s a shame they won’t take care of you. After hearing your experience I sure wouldn’t buy a Specialized ebike” Do you really want those stories circulating or do you just not care? Considering the battery says it is only 10% into its useable life before it died, it seems only fair you would stand behind your products.
Respectfully,
Nate Toney

@nathan - sorry to hear. The discounted offer here is in line with our Assisted Purchase program for out-of-warranty failures but I understand you feel that there was an underlying issue all along. I can't promise an outcome but I'm happy to dig in further for you and have sent you a PM.

Hi again everyone,
I just wanted to let everyone on this forum know that my 18 month battery saga has been satisfactorily resolved. David at Specialized UK really got the ball rolling in the right direction and he worked with Specialized in Morgan Hill to then communicate with my dealer. The problem was finally diagnosed accurately and I was issued a replacement battery. So far with 2 short rides the Levo is working well.
Take care everyone,
Nate

Mad Mark, I read forums all the time and have seen the comment about better bike, components etc.. for less money. Please tell me what make and model? I live in America and would want 29" wheelset and 600 + WH battery.

If you want to actually mention someone .. when you type press the "@" and then start typing the name of the person you want to mention.

like @ (no space) MAD . A list will appear of names and you can select who you want. The name will then appear highlighted in the post and you'll be notified .. like @Acc

Another update:

Mission control is no longer recognizing the bike. No communication other than "please turn off mission control". Then nothing. Can you help resolve this?
Thanks,
Nate
