Riding with mobile phones

It’s dead easy, just click on “track“ then draw a line with the mouse and save it as a GPX file. The good thing is that you can see the distance at any point and then see an elevation profile. If my route was over 3000ft I’d cut the distance down.
Do use track on pc to measure miles on routes I fancy. How do I get it to show on phone though 🤔.

Not sure what you mean. I email the GPX file to myself, open it on the phone and send to MM app.
Can’t do tracks anywhere but on the PC. App is pretty useless away from the PC. Can draw routes on the Ipad similar to the OS app but I don’t use this.
Have you tried the new MM app, MemoryMap For All? You can touch the track anywhere and it will give you the distance from start. Not really used this new app so not sure what it can do.

That's what's on pc

Got what you meen just sussed it out. Took two minutes, I told you I'm lazy or not interested with phones etc. Top right icon opens up overlays etc. Even seen thing that says record track , no stopping me now , only had MM for ten years. I draw a track on pc to work out the miles of a planned route then delete the track that's what I was meaning.

in MemoryMap, you have the option to sync GPX between devices (PC -> phone) but I've found it's inconsistent. Easiest / best way (for me) is to store GPX in a OneDrive folder then open folder / file on phone - automatically loads into MM on phone.

When riding, my (reasonably) expensive phone is in a padded neoprene case in my bum bag and I use my (reasonably) inexpensive IGPSport computer to navigate / record.

One drive folder ??? I will try out MM on Saturday see if I have actually worked it out.

Any cloud based share / folder will work - I use OneDrive (Microsoft) but will work equally as well with Google Drive, DropBox, iCloud, etc. As long as you can access from both PC & phone.

Same here a nightmare 😢 having to stop every few minutes if it's in rucksack. Shirt pocket ok if I have shirt on I may buy a lanyard and pouch.
I feel your pain :) being able to have a dedicated display on the handlebar: priceless

No no, tide and time wait for no man. While your stopping time is passing you by.
Just back

Landscape mode on Quad Lock mounted on stem cap so really flush mount. Landscape used so screen doesn't protrude past bars. Significantly reduces chances of damage in a crash.

Plugged in to keep it fully topped up even with screen full brightness on. Displaying maps when necessary.

No wallet required as all banking, purchases and identification done with phone. A single Credit Card for emergencies behind phone cover. I used to keep a $20 note with card. Didn't use it in 5 years. Got rid of it.

Keys not required as Tesla operated with phone. If phone is damaged. I have a work Iphone in Camelbak with Tesla App as well. Work phone can also do Satellite Emergency Texting. Australia is a big uncharted country.

Both phones call my emergency contact if they detect a crash. The one on the handlebar has tried to call them once when I dropped off a big ledge, but as it was visible. I stopped the call.

Love that set up! What exact model of mount is that?

I have the Quadlock and the Mous mounts. I much prefer the latter but will concede that a Quadlock is probably marginally the more secure.
Cheers. Did you bolt the quad lock mount directly to your stem cap?

Where do you stash your mobile phone and car fob when riding gnarly, steep downhills? Personally I don't trust it on the handlebars even though I have a good Mous mount. Carrying in a side pocket does not seem like a good idea either. For a while I considered a lanyard but that seems unwise if you are wearing chest protection. I do not like carrying a pack except on long XC rides so that's out. I'm left with too options a phone pouch mounted on the down frame or a minimal bum bag. Finding a suitable pouch is proving difficult so for now I am using an Evoc Racebelt that works well if you resist the temptation to put more in it than just the phone and car fob.

I didn't use the stem cap bolt. I've had issues before when I did this. I bought a new stem cap, so I didn't damage the original. Then drilled and tapped a 5mm thread into it just above the stem bolt. Then used locktite on the quad lock bolt, to ensure it never came loose.

Yes but I use the Mous handlebar mount. It does not require any tools to fit so I only put it on when I think I will need to do some serious navigation.

Very neat solution. I’m interested in what the was issue that stopped you using the stem cap bolt method? Did it affect the headset set up? Cheers.

I just prefer not to use the stem cap bolt, so there is no possibility of getting any play in the headset. I know the other stem bolts clamping the fork tube should hold. But I have had the headset bearings wearout early when I used the stem cap bolt to hold the quad lock.

In the early days I tended to prefer stem mounted solutions for items like this but after a while I came to realise that whilst it looks neat and tidy it is in fact more vulnerable. I also moved my Bosch screen for the same reason it now sits in the "corner" between the stem and the handle bar and is IMO better protected in the event of a crash.

My pocket, sometimes I squeeze it in my hip pack if it’s particular wet, but usually my trousers/shorts or jacket pocket.

I once saw a guy do himself some serious damage carrying his phone in his trousers pocket. I would strongly advise against it. If you must a chest pocket is probably the least risky. I use an Evoc hip belt which is very minimalist, I forget I have it on.

I’ve been fine for the last 20 years, I’ll take my chances. I’ve seen people seriously injured themselves in many ways.

I wonder how many times someone has said that and then not been fine. Everyone is fine until they are not. That is the nature of accidents. But they are your b*ll*cks so it's nothing to do with me so I'll keep my gob shut. :)

I completely agree.
I understand the need to have turn by turn navigation in certain areas. Having a device mounted to your bar. But there are some areas where you just can’t do that. The risk of a limb or branch ripping off your device is too great.…in certain areas and at certain times.

Navigation, HR, altitude, speed etc, is a very low priority for me. Safety is not.…which is why a helmet and safety glasses are always part of my ride(s). A First Aid kit also.

Ironically, I ride with a Doctor who never wore safety glasses …until a month ago. I warned him a few times …until he jokingly said “you’re not my mother “. Okay 👍🏻.

He suddenly disappeared from our daily rides for several weeks. When he returned, he was wearing clear riding glasses. He almost lost his eye from a small trail limb…and it friggen hurt. I’m glad he’s okay and I’m glad his behaviour has changed.

But my cockpit is as clean as possible …except for the bear bell 🔔

But you could say that about pretty much anything or any situation. The odds of injuring myself with my phone (especially my balls which are not really close to my phone), are pretty slim compared to the million other ways I could (and have) injure myself on a bike. Safety is all about playing the odds, if I try to eliminate all the risk from biking I might as well just sit at home or go for an XC ride in full armour rather than just a pair of riding trousers, knee pads and a t shirt.
Should I remove all the pins from my pedals because (not recently) I have had hundreds of shinners over the years? What about wearing a back protector on every ride regardless of the chances of coming off and breaking it (because it could happen on a Sunday pootle with the kids)? Or maybe not riding off road at all and just sticking to quiet tarmac cycle paths.

I know people who’ve injured themselves riding across the carpark to the trail, and other people that have cased 40 foot step downs and walked away with nothing but a few mild bruises.

I don't think there's enough data to say if phone-in-pocket is dangerous or not. I'm sure people have stories of it being a bad thing, but I also had a crash once where my phone protected me. The case was badly scuffed/scratched, but my leg was totally unharmed.

The bottom line is this is something I have identified and acknowledged as a risk because I have personally witnessed it (witnessing something is a great motivator). It is also a risk that is easy to mitigate against so why wouldn't I? In 20 years I have never banged my head but that does not mean I will not wear a helmet.
