Important safety note from Canyon: the Spectral:ON CF / CFR and Torque:ON CF models may have damage to the battery

what is all the crying about lads.
Maybe you've been a lucky man, this is my experience, just translated by Google from a post of mine on an Italian forum:
"2 days before Canyon stopped, the bike wouldn't turn on anymore, I took it to the service center and it took them about 3 weeks to understand that it was a useless GPS module that had broken and was blocking the engine. They ordered the new part, the order remained blocked for another 2 weeks, then it was sent to the wrong address, then another couple of weeks to understand the problem and send another GPS module, between one thing and another they gave me the bike back on December 27th (from November 2nd).
I tried the bike and at the end of the ride the engine wouldn't start anymore. I took the bike back to the service center that in the meantime had called me because Canyon had forgotten to write down the serial number of the useless GPS module so it had to be dismantled, photographed and sent to Canyon so that they could activate the module (which was never done).
I returned the bike before Epiphany, I tried it and halfway through the ride it left me and i returned back to the car pedaling. When I got home I realized that by assembling and disassembling the battery (not by me) the screws on the bushings that fix it to the frame had also stripped.
I was pissed off and scrapped everything."

Latest from Canyon (my bike is S so can’t accommodate larger battery 🙁)

We’re reaching out with an update on your battery order. Your earliest possible delivery is currently scheduled for August.
As announced, we began shipping the first batteries in March and will continue dispatching them regularly until all replacement orders are fulfilled. Unfortunately, the delivery will take longer than expected due to unforeseen production delays. Despite our teams pulling out all the stops, refinements to our assembly standards at the supplier's premises and the necessary ramp-up in production output have affected our planned timeline. We’re working closely with our supplier to get your battery to you as soon as possible.
As a next step, you will receive an order confirmation with your precise delivery date in August.
Compensation for Your Waiting Time
We recognize the inconvenience caused by this. When shipping your battery, you will receive an individual compensation as a token of our appreciation, which is calculated as follows:
  • Your exact compensation amount will be calculated individually based on the waiting period from March 31 until the day your battery is sent out to you from Canyon.
  • The monthly rate is scaled according to your bike model and purchase price, ranging from €104 to €238 per month. (Amounts will be converted to your local currency where applicable.)

August!!! Oh dear

"As a next step, you will receive an order confirmation with your precise delivery date in August."

Does that mean that you'll get delivery in August, or does it mean that in August you'll be told when you will get delivery?

That sure is. Bummer for those folks that are stuck in that situation -- especially those that have a cracked battery and have already disposed of it. 10+ months later and....still waiting while the bike gets older, depreciating in value and can't be used. Here's hoping that it doesn't actually take that long.

Trendpower also provide the higher capacity batteries for Merida with Shimano motors.
Shimao is the ones who back these batteries. Canyon just buys all the Shimano components. But if something goes south on your battery Shimano is who actually covers it. Canyon is only involved because its a safety issue on their name. Any other issues for battery warranty are through Shimano.

Under EU and UK law the contract of sale is unless explicitly stated otherwise solely with Canyon, the seller.

Are you sure? Where do you get that information? I don't think that shimano is taking responsibility for products designed by bike manufacturers who want specific battery shape and size, made for their specific frames. Shimano gives possibility for them to do this if they do not want to use shimano batteries (e.g. bosch doesn't allow for that), but they have to outsource production to a Shimano subcontractor factories (trendpower). IMO batteries for spectral: on and torque: on are Canyon specific products not shimano, it is only made under shimano 'license' to work with shimano motors but only Canyon is taking responsibility for these batteries as they designed them. Another topic is what kind fo deal/agreement Canyon have with Trendpower..
This is only my guess and I may be wrong.

@Winford is either unaware of, or fails to understand, EU (and UK) contract law. And perhaps even that applicable in his own jurisdiction. 😉

Good that you got your money back they should be fined for every day you had to worry and not being able to use it
I was within the period where I could dispute it with American Express which I did. Unfortunate because the bang for the buck was really good. I had the Spectral On CFR and the four way adjustable front fork much better than my Specialized Turbo Levo Comp Carbon which I just got. That bike had a lot of nice parts on it, just the battery issues.

You are wrong. These batteries are designed by Canyon with Trendpower and at this case when there manufacturing error, Canyon as seller is responsible. Warranty process goes normally through Shimano because these batteries work together with their motors. But this shit show has nothing to do with Shimano.

Well you are dead wrong. There is a Shimano QR code on the battery, and you would not know any of this if you were not already in for warranty work. I have been through this, Shimano replaced the EP801 and they were going to do the battery next. Canyon does the design, but warranty work goes through Shimano. That is a fact. Trendpower is just a subcontractor who builds the atteries. Same way Rosenburg does the wiring, but Shimano is responsible despite the design being Canyon. On my second cable from Shimano. My point is of you have battery failure under warranty, it goes through Shimano.

First hand information from having a lot of warranty work done. So I had a shutting off issue. Bike powered down intermittently. So Canyon directed me to my local bike shop. They in turn have to contact Shimano, and all of the powertrain is covered through Shimano. Shimano required I take pictures of their QR code on the battery. They replaced Rosasenburg cable, and sent me on my way. 4 weeks later same issue, they replaced the ep801. Canyon does this on purpose, so they are only responsible for the frame for warranty work. Rims are DT Swiss but you will never have warranty work on a rim. The rest Shimano covers. So if you hae abattery failure, it goes through Shimano, not Canyon. They are not involved at all. But they will reimburse you for your local shop fees not covered by Shimano. The warrant work does not cover labor by Shimano. [ side note, cause was water from washing the bike, im in a muddy mess where I ride, or dusty. Once I stopped washing the bike it didnt shut off mid ride]

Talking about batteries, anybody recieved one yet?
No, just the promise of 95 a month for the added delay. Not till the end of May at the earliest. Depending on your place in line. That is best case scenario. Will probably be later.

I do not give a rats ass about your BS. Under safety laws Canyon is responsible for faulty issues no matter what part. You are just a not bright and cannot comprehend, that the powertrain is all covered by Shimano for warranty work. If you have a battery failure Shimano replaces the battery or motor or cables, not Canyon. Now because safety falls under Canyon, and they sold us the bike, they are responsible for the problem as a whole. Never said anything different. But Shimano has their QR code on the batteries themselves, and if you have motor or battery or cable issues, Shimano is responsible for the warranty work.

This is just what I ment, this is normal process for the warranty, that why there`s Shimano codes. Maybe you should read some articles about these bikes (and others using Shimano motors and third party batteries) and the batteries, they talk about that Shimano has made possible to use third party batteries on their system.

This ^^^ may be the case in your jurisdiction (California), I do not know your consumer law.

However, products sold in the EU by Canyon are subject to EU contract law.

"Canyon Bicycles GmbH (abbr.: Canyon) is a German distributor and partly manufacturer of road bikes, mountain bikes, hybrid bikes, triathlon bikes and e-bikes based in Koblenz, Germany."

Finally received good news, got an e-mail from Canyon confirming a formal "order" for my new battery, 900 Wh, with estimated delivery between the 21st of April and the 2nd of May so it looks in the next couple of weeks my bike will be functional again !

Please keep us informed once it has arrived.

Still waiting for an email.....
I encountered a guy on the trails at the weekend riding a Spectral On and struck up a conversation… he said he’d hung onto his old battery as he thought it would go on for at least 6 months. When I asked about the fire risk he said he kept and charged the battery outside.
I really liked my Spectral On and was sad to see it go back.

Canyon Bicycles
Canyon is responsible for safety issues, thus making sure Shimano covers the warranty. If Shimano did not Canyon would have to. If you have not had warranty work done, you would never know. Shimano has replaced my motor, and right now on my 3rd battery to motor Rosenburg cable, and Shimano told me themselves the battery was their responsibility

And thus all liability regarding this lies with them. Which no doubt. Canyon is taking full financial advantage of while we have to wait.

Canyon is up the creek because of trendpowers mistakes. Canyon has screwed this up 10 ways to sunday.

The first money was a decent gesture, but they did not get their timing right in letting us know how long we would be fkd.

then they are not really paying for the lapse in time with the old payoff and new $95 a month payoff.

If we would have known it was going to be this fkd up, we would have crammed the bikes in mass returns. So ya their lies were to limit mass returns

I might not be as bright as you (which your posts make clear that nobody else on this forum is) but I do understand EU and UK contract law which you evidently do not.

Carry on group A rider 😆

And finally you admit it`s Canyon`s fault, not Shimano`s. Amen to that 🙏!
