i think the problem is the giant software....like someone said before. giant thinks they coud do better then yamaha and from the start this giant software sucks. if i coud and if it is possible i woud go for yamaha software but i dont think it is possible. if someone knows how let me know

So after 4 months going back and forth with giant, they tell me the motor has no problem, determine that I ride in the smallest cog on the highest power assistance, pedal too slowly... Utter BS and it is my fault, then i am told the bikes have humidity problems and i shouldn't ride in the rain and should dry my connectors mid ride...
I then ask should you spend 6K on a bike then put bathroom sealant everywhere to protect it from water??? especially i bought an offroad bike. I had to tell them Ive been dirt biking for years even on E dirt bikes river crossing and i've never heard such rubbish
They literally have no solution and are pushing it back on the customer. Weird thing is i cycle up hill it cuts and goes red.
I stop to chat with a mate it goes red. I ride dh trails it goes red. I ride in dry weather or wet weather it goes red.

They will lend me a battery to see if my battery may be the problem...

So I'm not sure they have a solution, at least not in my store. and may have spent too much on replacing motors and are cutting costs.

PS yes I've cleaned connectors tried the die electric grease, but it doesn't change the fact that it cuts out even in dry weather.

How old is the bike? Is it still under warranty?
If the motor is bad and it's under warranty it needs to be replaced by giant.
If it's due to you riding in the smallest gear uphill with maximum power it still should be replaced under warranty and they should advise you to change your habits with the new motor.
Either way it still should be replaced under warranty.
What country / state do you reside?

I gotta say, I was in the market for a new bike and came real close to pulling the trigger on a reign e. After reading through this thread I've changed my mind. Looks like the Giant warranty response is a real lottery.

The bike has 1500 km and has 6 months warranty left ( so it is just under 2 years old.
Good question I am dealing with Giant in France.

The bike is used to climb up roads and alpine tracks and ride town enduro tracks.
I agree it should be replaced but they are just rejecting it so i'm most likely going to take it to a consumer association and lawyer. As the bike is now unusable more than 40 to 60mins. In the past i could ride 50 km 2000 m vert, no issues. and to get that range you have to spin and keep a good cadence up use small gears and low assistance.

NicoMTB I totally feel your pain! I was the first one to have this exact problem over a year ago. After a motor replacement and no change I was told the same thing , yet my buddies bikes when I rode them on the exact same runs the same way they had no cut out. Giant said it was my fault as well. After mentioning I was going to take legal against Giant I was quickly offered a full refund, which I took and never looked back. I now have a Yamaha Moro with the exact same x-3 motor but tuned by Yamaha in a Yamaha frame and I have had ZERO problems with anything let alone the motor cutting out. It seems Giant in their wizdumb have screwed over an absolutely excellent motor with their own programming. It's too bad it makes the Yamaha motor look bad when it's not. Good luck with your dilemma, perhaps try mentioning legal action and see what happens.

I'm in Texas, our regional Giant representative hinted that it was a seldom occurring known issue. From the time the bike shop hooked my bike up to the computer and read the information they immediately acknowledge the motor was bad and one week later I picked up my bike with a new motor installed.
Of course we are in Texas, it's possible the local giant rep didn't want to be hung from a noose for failure to oblige

Ha ha ha nice in France we ve gone soft no more guillotine..
So after filming the issues and all their recommendations still failing the Motor is replaced and battery as well.
Bike has been in warranty for 5 months. Just head aches...
I'am selling it after. And already have something else arriving soon.
Customer service and the way it was handled it was just a disaster.
Maybe badluck. As when it works the frame geometry Mx set up is spot on.

I contacted my dealer who is very nice and involved. He advised me to use dielectric silicone grease (Velox brand) and has submitted my issue to Giant.

Of course, I will come back and share anything that might help resolve the issue.

Did the dealer specify where to apply the grease? Searched for Velox grease and it seems to be not be available here in the U.S. . I wonder what the differences are from other dielectric grease?

dielectric grease is an insulator it is non condusive and waterproof , if you put it on the connectors you ll block the current. velox is a special contact grease that does transmit current.

Dielectric grease is used on electrical contacts to protect them from moisture, corrosion, and contaminants. It prevents connection problems by insulating the external environment while allowing good direct metal-to-metal contact.

When connecting the two parts, the connection pressure pushes the grease out of the direct contact points, allowing good electrical contact while sealing the areas around the contacts.

This is probably not the cause of the issue we're experiencing here (LED L2 flashing red), but we need to eliminate any doubts.

I have used a thin layer of Super Lube dielectric grease on the plugs to the motor and battery contacts. I have cleaned the battery contact points with electrical cleaner and have not had issues since. Hopefully it helps you, like it did for me.

Just like parkp81, I cleaned the battery and bike contacts with a contact cleaner spray and applied dielectric grease (see photo). I also tightened the battery mount completely to ensure there was no play.

I turned the bike ON and without even moving, it went into error mode 20 seconds after powering on. To be sure, I slightly loosened the battery mount since my colleague’s (who has no issues, Reign 2022) was less tight and did not have this problem at all.

We went for a ride, and the problem occurred more than ten times, then after 10 km, it calmed down.
We took a break for 5-10 minutes, the bike turned off automatically. I restarted it, went up a technical climb, and it crashed in the climb (~2 minutes after I restated), but not at all for the remaining 15 km. I feel like it only crashes when it’s cold.

My dealer and I are wondering if it’s the battery. I will swap it with my colleague’s (if it fits) to see what happens and get back to you.

They need to hook it up to the Giant dongle and read the report it generates on the PC.
Until then, they are playing the guessing/ wishing game while your riding with a unreliable bike.
Giant knows of this issue, the shop needs to put pressure on Giant for a solution.

I forgot to mention that I also cleaned the battery contacts with the electrical cleaner and let it dry completely before installing it back onto the bike. For dielectric grease I used a very light coat using a qtip to apply it to the battery pins you show in your pic.

L2 LED is not a grease problem. Please stop giving advice to grease the connectors. If it works it is only a temporary fix but does not solve the problem. you cant go out on ride with an ebike if you have to fear that the motor stop working. Giant has to adress and fix the problem fast as possible or refund the customers

I was sharing what I did, not telling anyone to do it. Do what you want it is "your" bike. It has been working for me.

@martin_m_bo Taking care of the contacts on equipment that can be exposed to water and mud will never be a bad idea.

Nobody is sure where this problem comes from or how to fix it (except that their app says it’s the SyncDrive motor).

In my case, cleaning the contacts and applying grease did not fix the problem.

I completely agree with you that I no longer want to ride a bike that shuts down every five minutes.

My bike is now having this problem after 1500 kms. Giant dealer ran the advanced diagnostics and its coming up with a torque sensor error. Apparently that can't be fixed and it needs a new motor.

Yikes, my bikes now doing this again!

It did it first a while ago, when it was new (I only about 300ish km on it at the time - posted in this thread back then) and they replaced some wiring harness. It’s been OK since then, until now. It seems to trigger after just a few minutes of riding. Will get it booked in at the shop I got it from, I did purchase in late 2023 so the warranty should still apply.

In my case they changed the motor under warranty and after that i sold the bike.they did some software test.
if the magnet is not in place you can also get L2 flashing LED it happens ones after i lost the magnet XD

I also had the magnet displaced after changing the rear tire... The LBS should have a much more detailed diagnostics app on their computer, should point you in the right direction. Hope you can fix it quickly!

Just heard back from LBS... "we can see a fault in the fault logs but we can't reproduce it, and all diagnostics are passing"

In other words "no fault found", but at least the fault is on record for warranty purposes. They even made a comment that my bike is very clean & taken care of - and shows no damage to the bottom bracket region / cranks from pedal strikes etc.

So at least its on file that something DID go wrong, and the bike was checked over and no physical damage found...

Edit, took it for a quick 1hr ride on the local trails and around some bike paths as well. It didn’t cut out but at one point I caught the right controller display flashing its lights like it rebooted or something, but I only caught it out of the corner of my eye so I may have missed any flash code.

It feels like there’s some sort of loose connection somewhere.

Edit: Got my bike back. Since then, I've been on a range of rides. Some "real" mountain biking, others just riding on the pavement. The fault has not reoccurred. I Did catch the LED display dancing LEDs a couple of times with no discernible blinking fault codes, and the ridecontrol app doesn't' show any errors. So far so good.

Edit 2, it is now 3 months later, with multiple rides incl park days. No problems.

Giant (Taiwan) and Yamaha (Japan) have taken technology to ridiculous levels of complexity when it doesn't need to be. Justifies the high price of Giant eBikes. On the other hand you have motors by Bafang, Ananda and Tonsheng which are simple, UART serial electrics, which in comparison rarely fail and far easier to repair.

As much as I like the Giant design, my Chinese OEM eMTB with M100 motor is faultless with good internal components and good build quality. A mechanical bicycle with electric motor and battery does not need to be complicated.

No more Giant bikes for me. I am a Chinese convert. K.I.S.S.
