Another short ride today on some actual trails.

Bafang M500 Motor:

Super super quiet...
I'd think this will be a mile monster, with the 840Wh battery, depending on motor efficiency I think it'll out last most ebike systems (all other things being fairly equal)
I was expecting/hoping that this would be the case! I love a good “underdog that gives the status quo a good run for their money” story.

Surely the b£oody BB height is either too freakin high or too low? :sleep:?

Actually if someones bored perhaps they could do a spreadsheet with a mid level spec & see what it coud be a for a reasonable "wifes bike".?
 
Im asking because i need to do something with my Levo, Wales is pretty wet right now!
I used to use an old tub of ??????(name missing) dielectric grease / electrical cleaner - found in a farm building that was used for keeping the shit out of JCB and tractor electrics, but thats all gone now. you could spread the stuff everywhere, messy but worked really well.. not found anything like it since and looking for a replacement.
so did you simply spray the connectors etc?
Have you tried lanolin spray?
Not sure if LANOX is available in your part of the globe...

to be honest I’m not too bothered / skilled enough to get into the realms of electrical testing. ??

hopefully it is actually a 17.5Ah pack like they’re advertising though!
A simple test Rob is to plug it in,ride the bike and see how long it lasts.nowt like the real world test.??
 
Hi Rob I've been watching this with great interest as I built my xc bike up from a frame and made it what I wanted it was the best experience this is similar I'm running a e trance at the min but after next year I'd love to do this was it hard to organise paying import duty and tax and stuff I'm a bit taller than you so a frame with 510 reach sounds perfect hope you don't mind me asking ? Great paint mind I'm impressed with the finish ?
 
you can put acf50 spray on a rag and then put all over your bike (apart from brakes, seat, pedals and grips). it will protect all metal surfaces. it will leave a slightly greasy surface but as so little is needed this can be controlled. I spray it directly into my tcu and charging port on my levo SL. It will last over a year.
I tend to keep a soaked rag in a tied up plastic bag.

Corrosion Block is the grease version.

There's talk of the screen settings being able to give 5 and 9 levels, are you sure that on the other settings, say the 9th setting, will not get more assist ? Certainly other riders are saying that the M500 is comparable to the Bosch and Bafung claim 85Nm of torque for the M500 and 120Nm for the M600, which should be comparible ?
 
Thats a bit of a pain, thought the 3/3 would be the same as the 9/9 but worth a punt.

Are you underestimating the max output perhaps if the acceleration has been wound back ( the M600 had the same plastic main drive gear but in its early production run, the motor power stripped it and they went over to a metal gear ) and the engine is quiet with a slow kick in to prevent damage to the plastic gear on intial drive. We've all been in super quiet and super smooth cars that just outpace the V8 next door.

I think somewhere on the display is a motor Watt readout ?
 
Am I right in saying same motor I usedd in Class 2 Pedlecs with a different tune?
 
@Rob Rides EMTB could you maybe measure the seat tube angle? with your mullet setup and the 170mm fork I would expect you are sitting quite far over the rear wheel, or is the climbing position still acceptable?
 
The max watts I've seen on the display is 580W. Compare that to the Brose, I've seen way over 700W.

Similar to here - almost 800W from the Brose (electrical power)
The Brose is the king of power, we ride regulalry with one and we can output into the low 800's but the Brose will still outclimb us. Good motor.
 
I measured effective seat angle at around 75 degrees. BUT i need to do it again with more accuracy.

Due to the 455mm chain stay no issue with climbing so far.

thanks, was just wondering as they are claiming a 74.5 degrees on their sizing chart with a 150mm setup.
 
Wow...I am amazed buy that range!! I am actually considering getting a non ludicrous controller for my 600 on the X1 as it is more then powerful enough and I would love more range!

Rob would you ever consider bolting up the M600 on this bike or is that a no go? That motor is seriously impressive.
 
The reason I didnt go for the M600 was that I really need to keep it legal! The M600 is not an EU spec (as its derestricted / more powah!!) and I cant really go condoning that kinda stuff ?

Also, the weight, its quite a bit heavier.

Got it! I can understand that for sure and I always forget about the EU restriction! Honestly...for the trade off in range I would even consider the M500 for my X1 but for the time being I emailed Luna to see if I can get a non-ludicrous controller. My trail rides are typically 15 miles and 6-700 feet of elevation and depending on the trail, I have anywhere from 40 -60% left which isn't bad but if I could get 40 or more miles from a charge that would be awesome! That is a pretty sweet set up you have on that bike. (y)
 
Very interesting and tempting thread especially as I cant find a bike I would like to buy atm. 2 of my pals converted there old mtbs with Bangfang units and the power is amazing but not legal. They also mess around with tuning them power delivery etc but that is way beyond me.

Your smartphone should have come with an inclinometer app or a "measure app" of some sort. Just lean the side edge of your phone and measure the angle MINUS the angle reading you get off the floor (just in case it not exactly level).
 
I'm going to contact Bafang to see if there's any newer revisions to the firmware they can supply me. Also, I read that @patdam mention his felt less powerful than his Shimano, so we are both probably using the same firmware and getting the same power output.
I'm very interested to see if the firmware on your Bafang M500 is user programmable.

The older BBS01 that I have is infinitely programmable if I just download the software. But I couldn't be bothered doing the trial and error myself of finding the ideal advance curve, so I just took it to a bike shop nearby that specialises in Bafang eBike conversions and he just plugged his laptop to my motor and upgraded it - took about a minute and NZ$40 bucks - money well spent saving me the time and hassle. In my case, I had to tone it down because the surge of raw power frightens my wife when she uses the bike on elevated boardwalks around swampy areas (and tight switchbacks).

In case it matters, the older BBS01 motor requires brake levers (either hydraulic or mechanical) that have built-in power cut-off switches... so that the power will cut-off once the brakes are engaged - even if you happen to be pedalling or if you still have your finger on the throttle. The new programming that the bike shop installed for me no longer needs special brake levers. He somehow programmed the cut-off function based on the torque sensor from the BB axle and the wheel RPM. This meant that I no longer need switched brake levers and can now upgrade my brakes to any high-end brand I wish. I brought this up because you mentioned that your motor kit came with a throttle. I was just wondering if the "slow" uptake on power from your motor is an advance curve allowance for the throttle feature? - and if so, an allowance you would not need if you don't intend to install the throttle.
