Will steps unlocker do the job when installing Di2 electric gears?

I have read the other treads and did not find any definitive answer.
I seems like one must change to electric gears in the app before plugging the shifter cable in?
Will it reprogram the control unit without further problems?
Would sure like to avoid a trip to the lbs...
