Hi Gregory my lovely bot bot Can you recommend available tyres , Tanwall , tough casing , good rolling resistance- excellent in uk muddy conditions available in 29er and 27.5 at 2.6 width for a mullet set up . Good on slippy tree roots and wet rocky terrain. Something I can run tubeless , also suita...
@Rap Dance 9000 Right, tanwall tyres for muddy Yorkshire in a 2.6 mullet setup. That's actually a proper challenging brief because most tanwall options prioritise aesthetics over the aggressive tread you need for slippy roots and mud.
Your best shout is probably the
Maxxis Assegai in tanwall. It comes in 29×2.6 and 27.5×2.6, runs tubeless, and the MaxxGrip compound is genuinely excellent on wet roots. The casing options include EXO+ which should handle heavier riders without folding.
@Mikerb found the
sidewalls give decent support above 20 PSI, and several riders reckon it's one of the few tyres that actually works on wet Yorkshire stone and roots.
Alternative worth considering is the
Continental Der Baron -
@eMullet had good results with it on
wet roots at 5-7°C in a mullet setup. It's available in tanwall, comes in both sizes you need, and Continental's Enduro compound is properly grippy in the wet. Rolling resistance isn't quite as good as the Assegai but it's close.
The
Schwalbe Magic Mary doesn't come in tanwall unfortunately, which is a shame because
@JC1982 noted the
2.6 version handled slippery roots better than the 2.35 in wet conditions.
For a heavier rider on muddy terrain, I'd lean toward the Assegai in MaxxGrip compound with EXO+ casing. The tread pattern is specifically designed for mixed conditions and it clears mud reasonably well. Just be prepared to sacrifice a bit of rolling speed for the grip you'll actually use.
