Trail Etiquette ..!!!!

is there 'trail etiquette'

NO:mad:

(from a bikepark point of view) theres plenty of self-importnt fuckwits that are way more important than everyone else and have a gods-given right to block trailheads (sometimes to take photo's for grinder 🤷‍♂️), stop anywhere for a chat / repair bike or just because they are too unfit to complete a trail😶

I like a clean/uncluttered cockpit so I'm not fitting a bell to my MTB, although I do have mini one on my gravel bike.

If the slower rider is one the left I'll shout "on your right" or vice versa. I always say thank you and occasionally make comment on it being a nice day or some other inane chit chat.

It's dog walkers that annoy me on the trails/in the forest. Not all, just the ones with headphones in and extendable dog leads, or dogs off their lead running around whilst the owner is on their phone. A jab of the rear brake usually alerts one of them to the my presence.

I’ve always thought that rudeness cuts across every category: plumbers, farmers, quantum physics professors, local trade councillors, lawyers, pedestrians, cyclists, dog walkers, and drivers all seem to share a certain talent for being thoroughly uncivil.

The real issue, if anything, is twofold:
  1. how much enforcement there actually is in a given area (where I live in Italy, essentially NONE - ZERO - NADA), and
  2. how much damage someone can cause within their role.
Clearly, if you’re driving a truck, or running an entire country armed with nuclear weapons, you can do far more harm than an unpolite pedestrians group zig-zagging on a narrow shared cyclepath, or a mattress salesman.

Extendable dog leashes should be illegal. In my experience they're generally used by muppets (look at me being multi-lingual) that have no situational awareness of what's going on around them. I can't count the number of times I've had to dodge a dog/leash that's played-out 15 feet with the owner staring at their phone or just not paying attention to their surroundings.

I once had a woman step off the trail to let me pass while her dog, on an extendable leash, was on the other side of the trail hidden in the bushes. The leash blended into the background and I hit the leash which yanked her ankle-biter sized dog out of the bushes nearly breaking its neck.

I have two dogs and walk them with extendable dog leads which have been a game changer for us, so I wouldn't agree they should be illegal. However, I totally agree with you how many unaware, inconsiderate or just plain stupid dog walking muppets there are out there. IMO it's not the leash that's the problem, or (mostly) even the dog. It's the person on the end of the leash! Sadly you can't legislate against being a muppet!

What’s worse than retractable dog leads are the training leads that people are now using to walk their dogs!
FFS they must realise it’s easier with a short lead to walk a dog! Obviously not. Total nuisance.

Coming to the better weather now so only get more of the fair weather people out walking , with their bad ass glours.
Rode yesterday with a grandson. Dog walkers with dogs on long leads or simply running wild was quite an obstacle course until we got properly off road. But to be fair that's to be expected on a sunny Easter Monday.

You are correct. It's not the leash or the dog's fault, it's the unaware/inconsiderate dog owners that are the problem. Legislating away muppets isn't going to happen because most politicians, being muppets themselves, would lose their jobs as well. ;)

I walk my lads dog occasionally he walks free but grab her if need be. On the subject of inconsiderate your being nice describing them. Last week i walked on only railway line which is cycle / walker friendly. On the mile section I was on I picked up at least 15 bags of poo 💩 some been there a long time. I've never done that before and probably won't again.

I see the bags on trails as well. I hear the excuse of “I don’t want to carry it but I’ll pick it up on the way back”. It’s usually there the next day.

I was bitten by a dog last year on a ride, the owner was terribly apologetic while I waited for the bleeding to stop. I've lost count of the times I've come across aggressive dogs on the trails. They are by far the most unpredictable element of any ride & I'm so done with entitled owners.

Nothing is wrong with these as long as the spring for retraction is strong enough to pull the dog back when you press the button! 😂

So laziness is a world 🌎 wide thing.

Me too old woman said oh its never done that before. A sleeket Collie bred in to them . Antibiotics for a week .

I’m talking about the very long canvas train leads not the retractable type.
Supposed to be used in a space for training not general dog walking. Zero control of the animal meters of lead all over the place absolutely nuts.

I sometimes turn up my music.

If there are "cougars" I bring my Sinatra tapes and a credit card.

I usually just hang back and let them see me on the climbing switchbacks. If I'm coming up on someone who's on a mountain bike, I try not to jam them up. I gave up on bells. Coming up on blind corners, I yell, "Marco". If they don't yell back "polo", it's on them!

I just tired to be funny, i.e. dog pulled back flying by retracting leach device. Unfortunately no gif nor vids on the net.🤷‍♂️

Thats why I carry pepper spray but have not had to use it (yet).

Not sure that's legal here to use on humans
In most areas of the US, "defensive use" of pepper spray/OC spray is legal to use on people and domestic pets. Using bear-spray or insect-spray is not usually considered appropriate for defensive purposes however, different jurisdictions have different rules/laws.

Pepper spray is permitted for self-defense in countries like Germany (if labeled for animals) and Italy, but banned or heavily restricted for civilians in Belgium, the Netherlands, UK, and Norway. Always check specific local regulations before carrying, as improper use can lead to criminal charges.

Then there's the 9mm pelletized version. On early morning rides in the Wasatch, I usually carry because I'm not at the top of the food chain.
