The whaddya reckon it's worth? thread

Mulling over an idea but not sure it adds up. My 2021 Focus Jam2, meticulously maintained, lots of upgrades etc. has covered over 6000 miles now. I'm happy with the bike still & not motivated to switch until something turns my head.

I've come across a couple of identical Jams for sale with under 700 miles at bargain prices so, the thinking is I could move mine on & acquire the exact same bike if the cost to change works. For example, one is up for £1700,so if I can get £1000/1200 for mine, then I could switch for £500 give or take the haggling.

However, would mine even be worth anything near that & why am I even thinking about this? My bike is fine, long term forumites will know it's always kept in tip top mechanical condition so I'm not sure myself why I'm entertaining the idea but I think the question is: Is a four year old Gen 4 Bosch bike with a 625 battery & Captain Janeway mileage worth a grand?

I guess see if you can shift it .. if you can't - then it's a no go ! Lot of capable bike for £1k. Almost tempting just to keep it as a spare at that so you have a second swappable battery, spare motor etc etc etc .. spare bike for friends to ride ...

And then just buy the other as well ... Because you have one and aren't bothered, you can bid £1500 for the second one.

As you say, you have meticulously maintained the bike. Only you know how well you have treated it whilst riding it (river crossings, jet washes etc, big crashes.........or not!) It is worth FAAAAR more to you than some stranger would ever value it at. They will only ever be able to compare your bike with what everyone else is selling them for. Unless you get a powerful urge for a new bike (hard to resist, I know), then keep it going until battery or motor needs replacing. In fact, seeing as it's a Bosch motor, you can keep repairing it, so you only need be concerned about the battery.

I am having a similar crisis of conscience. I love my Merida e-One Sixty 9000. I've had it for over 4 years, meticulously maintained etc, etc. Not a thing wrong with it..... But I really fancy a Whyte Kado!

I have options.

• Follow the advice I gave to you. (I know it makes sense, but I want that Kado!)
• Sell it and let some stranger have the benefit of my meticulous......etc. But it's the cheaper and quicker option, if somewhat heart-breaking.
• Break it up and sell it for spares. I will make more money I'm sure than selling it whole. But it's a lot of effort.
  
• Give it to my much-loved 18-years old grandson. But he will put straight into Boost and thrash the arse off it and come complaining to me in a few months saying that the tyres are bald, the chain is rusty, the shifting is crap, the brakes need new pads, the motor is making a funny noise, and he can't afford to fix it in addition to paying the insurance and petrol for his car. So I'm not going down that route!

I couldn't sell my 2020 Rail two years ago with less than 3k miles for £2k so I think you might struggle.

I think that may be the reality, in which case I'm better off running it into the ground. The logic is if I can pick up an identical bike with under 1k on the clock for less than £2k, mine with moon miles will be a tough sell. No buyer cares how much fettling it's had, it either works or it doesn't.

Their dilemma is of course that even if they think the bike looks and rides fantastically, and most importantly they believe you as to how it has been treated, even you don't know if the battery/motor/both might fail two weeks after the sale. The higher the mileage, the more likely that scenario is to unfold.

I wonder what @franciscoasismm makes of this thread? He has reported here frequently that he does HUGE distances on his ebikes and never has a motor problem (and I assume no battery problem either). How on earth does he sell his bikes with many times your mileage?

I'm contemplating selling my 2021 Vitus E Sommet VRS. It's only got 1300 miles on it (I have other bikes which I use) but I think they're struggling on value. I'm not sure if it would be more valuable in bits or as a bike you could try and convince others to switch to emtb with.

Build each one up slightly differently for different things.

Then you'd even have the joy of naming them, like Strawberry, Raspberry and Marmalade for your special one ... ?!

Think of all the time you could waste thinking of different specs and crap to buy (on discount).
