8 miles out today I got a SYNCHDRIVE WARNING and my motor conked out. I’m guessing that it has something to do with the SpeedBox, but I won’t know until I tear it down again. Anyone else ever see this?
It’s going to be a long, hilly 8 miles home. :(

Well after I M88-ed home on the back of my pickup truck, I still get the SYNCDRIVE WARNING at boot up, and a wrench icon in the display. But, pedaling around my driveway the motor seems to be working in all modes.
So I’m wondering if the wrench is like the bike’s “check engine” light, meaning there’s a code stored somewhere. Anyway to see what that is without taking it back to the LBS (after doing a time-consuming SpeedBox-ectomy)?

Today is clearly “unhelpful post” day.

As already said from others, Giant is not playing games when it comes to derestriction.

Now from your description(motor spins in all modes but no assistance right?) it looks like the software detected derestriction and went into limp mode( 6A error code derestriction detected), but it also could not be it, can't say for sure, it could be a sensor issue or else. Usually if in the app if doing a scan the Syncdrive motor has a red X it's locked by the 6A error.

If you do a search here on emtb forums or on fb groups, search word 》6A Giant 《 you can find that If that is the case Giant will want your motor sent in for unlocking it for a payment in a value of a derestriction device or more. The bike shop will charge you for the labour of removing and reinstall of the motor etc...unless you have a good friend in the shop etc...

Also they in most cases don't care if you have warranty or similar and you can't get a direct contact at Giant as they operate trough dealerships.

Hope u get it fixed without to much hassle 👍

"Congratulations".... you are now Giant customer (victim) number ### of Giant's E-Bike Tampering Policy. Updated firmwares via the App or your local Giant dealer has bricked your bike.

Actually, the motor is providing assist so far, at least around my driveway/neighborhood. The warning and wrench icon persist, however.

Haven’t used the Giant app for anything in over a year, if I connect to the bike at all it’s via the SpeedBox app. It hasn’t been back to the LBS at all, let alone after installing the SpeedBox.

Is there a way I can see the code it’s throwing or can only the LBS do that?

The error code only shows up in the crappy Giant app and you definitely don't want to do that as it will install a fleet of new component firmwares you DON'T want ! If the bike was subject to the brick trick, it would of stopped the motor in it's tracks or stuck in 6kph walk (limp) mode.

You are stuck between a rock and a hard place. If you remove the Speedbox and they plug in the Giant diagnostic software, it will update your firmwares regardless BA-BOOM (you don't want that). Then if they fix the problem, motor / battery / wiring / speed sensor to fix your spanner, reinstalling your Speedbox will trigger the 'brick-trick' BA-BOOM - back to square one.

The service spanner is more likely something 'little' - check the speed sensor and magnet first, the most common issue, followed by wiring loom, controller buttons and water ingress especially around battery connection. Also try charging the battery off the bike. Maybe even remove the Speedbox temporarily.

Which year Trance is this? Which motor Syncdrive Pro or the current Syncdrive Pro 2?
Because the older Pro didn't have such issues with derestriction.
If it's the newer Pro 2, I must correct offroad here. It's completely possible to use the App and not update anything. Been doing it since I have the bike.
Procedure:
1. Turn on the bike
2. Open App with data on the mobile phone On an Bluetooth Off.
3. App signs in and asks you to Turn on Bluetooth(Don't do it here).
4. Turn off data and/or wifi on the mobile phone.
5. Turn on Bluetooth and connect the bike. It will then ask you to turn on data(just ignore or dismiss-press anywhere on the app except on yes - it will dismiss the prompt).
6. Voila you should be in the App connected via Bluetooth.

Now, in the app you can't see the actual 6A error code(that's only possible in the shop Giant diagnostic tool software on a computer). In the app it's just a simple scan that shows if everything is ok or isn't with a green ✅️ or a red ❌️.

I don't see the value in destricting. My Trance tops out at 18.5 MPH (I wish it was 20 though) and I'm going just about as fast as I want to go. I ride single track and to top out requires a spin on the double track. And BTW, Giant's warrantee is worthless. I had a problem with my Sync drive pro with a week left on the warrantee and Giant refused to look at it.

My guess is bikes been bricked by Giants speed tampering software, motor will have to reflashed by giant themselves.

I only open the app and connect the app to the bike in airplane mode with wifi turned off.
I'm not interested in their updates.
They get their panties in a bunch while other quality brands allow a class 3 mode.
There are popular jump lines that require a speed over 20 mph to clear the gaps, it is disconcerting when you try to get a extra crank in coming up to a lip only for it to feel like you are pedaling through sand, right when you need just a little more speed.
Shoot, Im able to outpedal an ebike on flat or slight descent for short distances, until I run out of ass.
CCP level of control imho

It doesn't work with the newer version of the app where you need to open a Giant ID account. There u need to sign in to the app with data/wifi on and turn it off before connecting with BT.

Final outcome: LBS replaced motor under warranty due to an “unspecified motor failure”. Returned the SpeedBox for a refund as it is clearly shite.
