Sram Brakes, Mineral Oil

The Sram DB8’s came standard on the new Fuel EXE 2024. My thought was that this would be the first upgrade …to Magura MT7’s.

After three rides they seemed good. Maybe the lever shape could be different but the modulation was also good. I’ll give them a shot …as long as they stop me.

So how about bleeding these brakes. I’ve never bled Sram mineral oil brakes before. A full bleed, mini bleed,…hopefully I have the tools and adapter's for that. But I purchased the mineral oil required …it’s green apparently.

While I was ordering upgrades for the Fuel EXE from my LBS, the owner verbally let it slip out that Sram is releasing a new higher end brake system next week. I pressed him further for information but he quickly said “I’ve given you too much information”.

He distracted me by showing me a titanium framed MTB.

I’ve still got my old Marin with a titanium frame tucked in my in-laws garage. Must be about 30 years old now! No idea what happened to the saddle - I fear it may have been borrowed for something else and never returned!

Friend of my was riding them. I did a ride with his bike and the brakes did stop me where needed. It has a bit less stopping power then I was used. Still a good set of brakes. Also quit easy to bleed.

I ended up to do two other rides with his bike. For me I prefer the Magura MT7 (raceline) caliper + Shimano XTR M9120 lever combination. Gifs me bit more stoping power and beter feeling when breaking.

It is just a personally thingy brakes ;-)
 
I received a bike that came with the DB8's and was really impressed. For a $60 brake set they work really well. I bet upgrading to better pads and thicker rotors and they would be a really good brake.

Mine required a bleed right out if the box to get both levers consistent. I had one of those cheap universal bleed kits from Amazon and it had all the fittings required. I also used used Finish Line mineral oil and had no problems. I've used the same bottle for Magura and Shimano brakes and haven't had any issues.

One thing to note is they stop as hard as your willing to pull the lever. I'm a rather large guy with large hands that have no problem stopping with these even on hard downhills but I could see if you were smaller it could be tiring to give the effort that it requires for that kind of power.

He was talking about the Maven, it’s SRAMs new big boy brake. I have a set pre-ordered through my mate’s shop to give them a try, they should be announced today. It’s basically SRAMs version of the Saint brake; big, beefy and powerful.

Post up a new thread with a review when you have them. Particularly interested to see the comparisons with Saints and Tech 4. Can’t see myself ever spending money on SRAM brakes thou

I’m not a huge fan of SRAM brakes either, almost every set I’ve owned have had some kind of issues. I like trying new things though so I’m open to see if these can change my mind. No idea how long it will be before I get them though, he hasn’t got them in the shop yet and they still have to ship from the US to the UK.

Yup. Just released today. $869.00 CDN. Front and rear.
 
Ordered. Twice. One pair for the e-bike and one for the eatbike on those bikepark days.

They look big and heavy and strong.
Things I don’t want or need. If I was heavier, on a heavy eMTB, these could be a good solution.
 
362 grams for the maven.
310 grams for Dominion A4.
306 grams for the Shimano Saint.
310 grams for TRP DHR EVO.
The dhr evo is the top brake out there IMO. Its incredible. Don't know why anyone would get the maven over current options available.

So around 310 grams for the average brake system. I wonder how MT7’s compare?

I don’t think I’m a weight wheeny but a few extra grams on a light weight eMTB starts to make a difference. Which is why I’m installing ERA carbon cranks on the Fuel EXE. For my light weight I don’t think I need the Mavens…but if I was heavier, there’s more options out there now.

253g (w/o rotors, adapters) for mt7
im certain the other weights dont include adapters or rotors either.

Like it I had the Rocky Ridge put a set of Rock shox on it those were the days
Lot easier to ride a mountain bike these days lol
