Different people different like. I love super (ultra) soft when the trail are super hard. At my place at the moment its so hard that no tire can dig in to get some grip. You would need to put stud to dig inI'd really like to try a MM Gravity Soft in the rear but a 29" hasn't been released. After trying the Albert SS that compound just won't work for me in anything hard packed. Some SoCal trails are like concrete these days.
So the Super soft compound will give better grip like if you use soft compound tire on a race car.
I use Albert SS now and before maxxis Disector super soft compound (maxx grip) at rear in summer.
I often cut down the center knob on my tire with the schwalbe tread cutter to get faster rolling.
A rear tire in those super soft compound last almost a month. some will say it's expensive. I think that compare to when I ski in winter it's very cheap ( Ski pass)
