Agree 100% about the frozen mud. As long as it is far enough below zero. Sand is great then too.

Sand.. all I imagine is grinding away of gears and chain lol. I don't know what's worse mud or sand..

The sand just becomes solid and grippy too, just like the mud, but without the ruts. Harburger Berge, the main MTB area south of Hamburg is part woodland, part heath, so you get the best/worst of both worlds.
