Quick coffee machine poll

I have a Breville Barista Pro. I chose it because it's an all-in-one machine with a built-in grinder, steam wand, and quick heat-up time, which is perfect for home use. It offers great espresso quality, and I appreciate how easy it is to adjust settings for different beans. It strikes a good balance between affordability and performance.
I had one similar which lasted nearly 10 years.
Broke down in Covid times and I replaced it with a heavily discounted DeLonghi machine that visually was almost identical.
I've never been as satisfied with it as I was with my Breville.

My wife got a DeLonghi machine for Xmas, makes pretty decent Latte's

I simply use a Bodum French press, and when its cold use a microwave to re-heat a mug full. I do get through about 8 large mugs a day mind. None of that instant crap mind. Not a complete luddite

A fool and his money are soon parted .......
Simple £20 cafetiere ffs! £7 for a bag of ground coffee. Zero waste as grounds go into compost. It's really beyond me how or why someone would spend 400 quid on a coffee maker.

Some people like nice things.
Others are satisfied with mediocrity.
De gustibus non est disputandum.

Sage Bambino Plus, pulls a fantastic shot....
No matter what machine, the best thing to do is ditch those pressurized baskets and get the best grinder you can afford....

I used to have a Gaggia classic or whatever it was called.
These days I just use a grinder and a French press/Cafetiere.
My kitchens too small and I don't really have the space for an Espresso machine
Gaggia Classic is a fantastic machine, they have quite a following in the home coffee world...

Rocket Giotto Plus and Mazzer Mini Electronic grinder, 14000 coffees over 12 years. No one in the family buys coffees out.

My first cup of coffee was at 8 years old. I was camping with my family. (Not an actual photo)😉

It was coffee or water. I had to use water after to rinse the grounds from my teeth. It became an acquired taste 👅 that I still enjoy today.

Yeah ^^^^
My father was a forest ranger in Montana in the later 1930's. He always swore by this. I'm inclined to agree, but it's a lot easier to load up the Monsieur Cafe' in the morning!

Looks like Turkish Coffee. Very nice, if properly prepared and you let the fine ground coffee sink to the bottom of the cup.

An espresso machine is my daily driver. I have a Londinium L1P. A single-group commercial spring lever with no pump (plumbed in and operating at line pressure for pre-infusion). It essentially has a Bosco group head, arguably one of the best in the industry that hasn’t really changed since the 1960’s. It has a huge 7-liter boiler with a thermosiphon heat-exchanger (i.e. not a dipper) operating at 240V (bigger deal here in the States for home use).

Why is this my machine? Lever shots are really the best and produce a pressure profile I prefer with low-tech mechanical artistry and is mostly temperature stable given its HX design. It’s roomy to work on and there’s effectively nothing proprietary about with easily accessible parts. It’s not a Kees, Strada, Slayer, or Synesso with dual boilers, pumps, pressure and flow profilers, PIDs, and spring adjusters, etc. but man it gets the job done day after day. And no freaking pump noise.

Massive coffee nerd here....macchiatos/cortados for us

Bezzera Strega Lever
Odyssey Argos Lever
Flair Classic Lever (camping set-up)
Bodum vaccum

Baratza 270wi grinder

Hot top KN-8828B-2K roaster - I roast 1/2lb every 2-3 days. Have been roasting on/off for 15-20yrs. Roasting some
Ethiopia Dry Process Yirga Cheffe Halo Beriti now.

Spent some time in the coffee industry both as a barista and doing cafe design/architectural work.

My latte art is embarrassing though!

Great coffee can definitely be inexpensive, especially if you roast your own beans and use something like a french press, aeropress, pour-over or manual lever. Grind is a critical step though!

Buying & roasting green coffee will pay off a decent grinder in a matter of weeks. Green coffee is like half the price of even the worst roasted coffee, and you can get a decent grinder for $100usd now. Roasting beans in a stainless dog bowl with a heat gun, or popcorn popper, can be a big step up from most commercial coffees.

If I didn't want to spend the money, I'd be happy wirth a bodum vacuum & inexpensive burr grinder. It's harder to get around the cost of paying someone else to roast your coffee though.

Kindred spirits when MTB/EMTB geeks are also coffee geeks! And a "lever head" to boot! What similar trajectories:
  1. Been home roasting for 20+ years.
  2. I still have by Gen-1 Hottop (not programmable) - my first drum roaster, but packet away these days. I moved to Huky 500 stove-top manual roaster and then finally to Gen-1 North Coffee 1KG roaster, acquired before Mill City Roasters became the US distributor.
  3. Equally embarrassing latte art (more Pollock than O'Keefe)
  4. Grinder is first-gen Monolith Flat single-dose grinder and auto-doser compliments of Acaia Orion

How far are you roasting the DP Yirg to and for brew or espresso?

Yeah, love it!

At 20(?) I was a barista at a local cafe/roaster that was the go-to after local sunday cyclocross races. I got adopted by some cat-2's who invited me on their rides and then offered me a job at their bike/frame shop. Bikes and coffee have been intertwined ever since!

The Ethiopian is for espresso. The Hot Top is fairly new to me, I was roasting on behmor 1600's for years- I had two which I have since passed on to friends. Artisan scope is a game changer!

I will DM you for further nerding!

I only make drip coffee and not going to focus too much on it so for hardware I’m using a Moccamaster KBVG brewer with a Baratza Virtuoso grinder.
I weigh my grinds with a Park Tool scale. lol

Here's my setup. Mostly drink drip but have the breville for when we need an espresso drink. the Mahlkönig grinder works great!
IMG_4893.jpeg
Printed a shoot and cup lid for it and it's much less mess now too!
Oh, and my 36oz cup which is the only cup I use. The doc said I should only drink 2 cups a day, so that's all I have lmbo.

That is a very good idea! 👍 I do my very best but sooner or later its all messed up by powder and quite a loss of good coffee.

How do you make coffee at home then ??

I'm not good with words, maybe you could post a picture of your setup .. say, with an old calendar in the background for scale. December 25 must be to hand still.... Or another month, if you had a preferred month - a month that shaped up well in your mind.

Hey! Thanks for that Zim.
I probably didn’t get a good enough angle when I first posted my Dream-Machine.
IMG_1003.jpeg
Different angles are important sometimes. 👍🏻😉.

I still prefer the pods in Mexican or Expresso flavours. Easy for a once-a-day kinda guy …I must be getting old and a little lazy.

Saeco classic and love it. I am tempted to try the Rancillo Silvia just to see how they compare.

When traveling in Europe I wake before the cafes are open and so, take the nespresso capsules and pour them out onto a napkin and drain water over to have a cup when I do not have access to a coffee maker.

I use to take the entire coffee station with me when I went on vacation. I can’t do Starbucks or Tim Hortons coffee anymore. Pita it is. 😉

A napkin eh? 🤔 hmmm

It's only one way to enjoy the coffe and pods is not the way. I enjoy at least 4-5 Ristretto every day.
It's a bit heavy and big so it won't fit the SWAT bag in Levo 4 but around 10 -15 kg in a backpack should be good.
Happy ride and New Year ☕️Viva Italy

I used to buy boutique beans but found happiness in a Cuban roast in the local NY-metro Costco, but since moving to Arizona the Scottsdale Costco doesn’t carry it. I guess I’m too far from Cuba! 😂 Now I buy this Peet’s dark roast. Perfectly happy with the taste/price/convenience ratio.
